When my daughter was 15, she was miffed because ‘everyone’ flew somewhere for spring break except us who ‘couldn’t afford it’. When she was in grade 12, she asked us exactly how much we have saved for university. Her mouth dropped when there’s enough so that she won’t need a student loan. She told us that some other kids were told by their parents that they have zero money for post education. These are the same parents that flew to Mexico every year. Now she is moved out and attending university, every day she is so grateful and hard working and is learning to be financially independent.

@L Kam Thats great.... But one thing i learned in the financial world..In most cases, your kids have far more time on this planet than you do...There is nothing wrong with them taking on a bit of a loan and learning the value of responsibility with that decision. I did.. but also got a little bit of help... Builds character rather than a hand out on top of the fact you had to put yourselves on the back burner to pay for it all... Your going to die one day ...Enjoy some of them.

@@MG-og5gf It has impacted these kids’ futures because none of them attended post secondary education. They now feel stuck waiting tables and scraping by. Whereas my daughter is looking forward to a career in the medical field and financial independence.

@@lkam8541 well that's great then. Happy for your family that your financial planning has created a bright future. I didn't have that opportunity, but I did have the chance to budget travel, meet great people, and serve(wait tables) at restaurants across Canada, like Jasper, AB. Experience is invaluable. Although I hope to create a similar future, as you have for your daughter, for my 6 yr old lil girl by putting educational funds aside. Didn't mean to offend, just looking at it from different angles.

My parents came to this country with just the clothes off their back, not speaking English, worked at menial jobs but they managed to put a roof over my family’s heads and saved money. They worked hard and were frugal for certain things but super generous when needed. They instilled their work ethics to their children and many of the points you spoke of. You are correct, it starts with parents. I’m now teaching my child. Your videos are invaluable. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

GREAT VIDEO!!! Financial literacy is so important to learn from a young age. My lessons were "There's need to have and nice to have" My "allowance" was earned by doing chores around the house for $1/Hr. I had to save up to buy my first stereo which took for-ever, but so worth it for the lessons. Starting in university, (studying accounting) I kept a financial ledger and I still do everyday, before I even get out of bed, so I know my net worth, to the penny, every day. I am 57 and I am retired. BOOM!

I am a father and I have opened a TFSA account for my daughter when she became 18 to invest in stocks and ETF. I made a bad example though in the first year of buying Suncor and it dropped almost 60% last year but I held on to it and up to today it still drop like 23% wow but I will keep it until at least breakeven. This year I bought index ETF like VUN, VCN and they all made money. Not bad and I think it's important to let your kids know the importance of investing and growing your money.
@khuo02193 жыл бұрын
Good for you for investing with your child. But sometimes you just have to cut your losses on investments. You are anchoring on a sunk cost - what you paid for it is irrelevant, you should only evaluate investment on what it is going to be. In my opinion, both vun and vcn will do better than SU in the future.
@paull79373 жыл бұрын
@@khuo0219 I think the oil price will go up with the economy slowly opening up and same with the energy companies like Suncor. Also, since it is a TFSA account there is no loss claim to compensate for any gain. So I think holding and waiting for a bounce back may have a higher return than the index ETF.

Not too long ago I sat down with my mother to explain what a TFSA was and it was one of the coolest experiences of my life. I even played her YOUR video on the subject to help reinforce it! I *loved* this video! This is by far my most favourite video of everything you have put out. How lucky are you boys to have a father like Marc. The financial education that he gave you is so incredibly valuable. One thing that struck me is when Brandon and Jesse spoke about moving out and having to learn how to pay rent, budgeting and that heat and water are not included in rent. These are the types of things that should be taught in school and it is a big fail on our education system. The cycle of poverty continues because of financial illiteracy and is passed down from generation to generation. Sitting down with your kids and showing them how to do taxes, as grueling as that task can be, is just so important. The love, respect and pride that all of you show to each other is so special to see. Thanks for sharing. Happy Fathers Day 2022.....

I did get a lot of stuff as a kid from my parents, but everything I got was a battle. In my teens I was taught about credit cards, how much they paid on specific bills, taxes, etc. when I got my first job in Gr 11 (summer of 2007) I was cut off financially from my parents (they said if im capable of working then I wont need their money), anything I wanted I had to go out and get myself from that point on. This instilled in me that when I get money, I want to hold on to as much of it as I can. My parents didnt know about investing so I had to learn that myself later on in life..... I KNOW 90% OF PARENTS DONT DO THIS...... IF YOU OWN A HOUSE TEACH YOUR KID WHAT A MORTAGE IS AND WHAT GOES INTO PURCHASING A HOUSE. ITS THE BIGGEST PURCHASE YOUR KID MIGHT EVER MAKE. I have no clue why alot of parents dont do that.....

I will most definitely do the journaling and 4 quarters game with my kiddos. I think it would set them up from a great start to manage money themselves, so in addition to the RESP, they should be all set when they turn "fly out of the nest" age.

I'm from a developing country now living in Canada, my father also taught me how to save from a small age. I wasn't lucky to have a financial adviser as my father but he taught me what he knew. He gave me a daily allowance, and he was ok giving this some of money because he knew that I save a part of it without spending it all. These saving habits I still have as an adult. Frugal living is tough when you are married. :)

I started my daughter’s allowance when she was around 4. We would go to the store together and it was meant to spend but she always ended up getting me to pay and she saved her money, smart kid. I also took her to work on weekends and she helped me file at the office. We started by negotiating the price but she always would try to change the work a bit to get more money, that’s when I knew there was no stopping her, lol.

I absolutely love these tips. Unfortunately my brother and me had to learn these things on our own. Speaking of moving out early, I absolutely recommend it! My brother and me moved out when we were 19/20 during university. We actually made a presentation to our parents 😂 highlighting the numbers and the benefit of living closer to school.

Hey dad’s wearing an AirNorth t-shirt. I’d like to know the history on that. Yukon is my home town and Air North is our airline. You answered my question later in the video.

I love this!!! ❤️ I laughed hard with Marc’s car story, seriously my dad is literally the same, the analogy and everything. He got a Honda Civic in 1997 and it took him 21yrs to get a new one (5yrs of convincing) but pass down the Honda Civic to my brother 😆 Happy Father’s Day Marc! And As always, you guys impart valuable knowledge, thank you!

🔥fire content! clearly I'm binge watching all your videos, but this one is so useful to think for your future youngsters in the fam and instilling that concept of saving to the next generation - and on the point of frugality, definitely shows that most people think being frugal is a fancy way of saying cheap, but most people do value frugality and appreciate when their kids from a young age see that from you as it is a great trait to carry with you super nice to see the family bond in this too! definitely had me cracking up in some parts 😂 - amazing video as always!

Great video guys. Any tips on how to do investing when you don't make enough to cover your basic needs, let alone discretionary spending? rent(room and board) , phone, gas, and insurance take about 90% of my net. Leaves about $150-200 per month for clothes, car maintenance, out of pocket medical/dental, and incidental/unexpected costs. BTW my net is about $1300-1500, of which rent is $800. Really would like to get ahead. BTW I'm in my mid 50's. Thanks, any thoughts greatly appreciated.
