Midori is astounding!!! She's so kind too....had the fortune of being her accompanist's page-turner for the concert...so nerve-wracking, but definitely, the best seat 5 feet behind her on-stage (on a $10M+ violin no less). Topped off with attending the masterclass she gave that afternoon...definitely a day I'll never forget!

A parallel I’ve noticed between great virtuoso pianists and violinists from watching your video is the economy of movement. Everything is so efficient and I think that lends to making the performances look ‘easy/effortless’.

dude i'm no classical musician and even when i used to play the electric guitar i've heard of that. the greatest guitarists, the more technical ones, are the ones who move their hands the less. maybe that's a string instrument thing
@LykanVarion
@LykanVarion 3 жыл бұрын
@@laura3003 The less time you spend moving between strings and moving your arm, the more effortless things are, you waste less energy. That's why a LOT of distortion also helps for guitar shredders, you need to do way less to get your sound out, at the expense of having mistakes heard more
@Simplenotion
@Simplenotion 2 жыл бұрын
yeah. It makes you able to be more flexible in your playing because you're not limited by extra movement, you're quicker, cleaner, more efficient plus you have more stamina and you're actually able to emote more because you CAN put stuff on top.

Brett and Eddy or Eddy and Brett, You are the "master class" of helping us understand, hear and appreciate the world of violin. So fascinating and interesting! No one else has done so much to educate viewers to enjoy the depth of the art of the violin. You've made the skill and emotion of the music accessible to the "common" man. Keep up the high level of presenting the factors involved in great performing and making one a fan of classical music AND the artists.

"How rare is it to be able to hear the composer play his own piece?" Agreed for legendary older composers. One of my favorites is looking up recordings of Rachmaninoff playing, and it's really breathtaking whether he's playing his own pieces or others (he played liszt's Hungarian rhapsody no 2 for example). His renditions tend to ignore the sheets, even his own, which I find fascinating. Interestingly he also wrote a piano version of liebesleid which has a recording of him playing.

Nr. 8 is actually "Liebesleid" instead of "Liebeslied". Lied is the German word for song while Leid is the German word of pain or suffering. And in case you also want to understand the first part, Liebe means love. So the title means something like "love pain" "pain of loving" etc.

“Where did strings come from back then?” Looks like someone didn’t pay attention in Music History at Uni 😂 They were made from Gut, an animal intestine. Guitar strings and harp strings, with a majority of instrument strings, were made from animal intestine. There’s actually a story of the birth of Hermes, where, moments after he was born, killed a sheep and a tortoise, used the sheep’s tendons to form strings and bones for the neck, and tore open she tortoise shell and used it as a resonating chamber for the instrument. If I’m cursed with this knowledge then everyone is cursed with me

The changeover to metal strings happened during the Boomer generation. My mom (cellist) doesn't really like the new metal strings, they're harder on the fingertips. When I was doing Suzuki (a number of decades ago), I think two of my strings were metal and two were gut.

0:43 - Sergei Khachatryan, Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1. Control, and emotion, a flawless rendering of the concerto. 3:52 - Nathan Milstein, Milstein Paganiniana. Modern-day ferocity coupled with old-school command of the music. 5:40 - Itzhak "The Sneltch" Perlman, Korngold Violin Concerto. His playing reminiscences the very human experience of love, and warmth. 7:19 - Midori Goto, Sarasate Zapateado. Crisp, and an excellent show of her virtuosity on the instrument. 8:30 - Janine Jansen, Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 2. A marriage of power and lyricism, strength and beauty. 9:52 - Marabella Steinbacher, Beethoven Violin Concerto. Melodic in the face of non-melody, and warmth in contrast to coldness. 11:41 - Hilary Hahn, Barber Violin Concerto. Immense speed and control, culminating to an awe-inspiring musical moment. 13:59 - Fritz Kreisler, Kreisler Liebesleid. A beautiful interpretation of his own work, not hesitating to fall out of strict musical time, and masterful articulation.

One of my favourite classical music performances in history is Jacqueline Du Pre playing the Elgar cello concerto. She really makes the music a part of her, and her cello and her almost look like they are one. I also think that another reason that I find the performance so moving is knowing the fact that she had to give up playing the cello when she was (I think) 27 due to multiple sclerosis. Every time I listen to her music I feel so hopeful about life and yet so sad. It's strange the certain emotions that you can only get from music.

Well when referring to a musician's style in playing an instrument, it usually denotes how they interpret or how they would tackle a piece. If you've seen their old-school violin playing vs modern violin playing vid, it basically shows how different a musician tackles a piece. A great example would be how some pianists tackle a piece. Take two recordings of two different pianists playing the same piece and you can spot differences in their playing, mostly in how they deal with dynamics and how they would play cadenzas. Like a certain phrase would be written for pianissimo but the musician has the choice whether they want to follow the score fully or put a little bit of their own personal flair to the piece.
@hannaholzwarth3990
@hannaholzwarth3990 4 жыл бұрын
Basically every artist has their style, like you can differentiate singers by their voice and style of singing, just because you are probably more used to hear singing in the everyday life. It is just practice and if you hear a lot of different violinists you can easily tell after a while which artist it is and how they play it, for example if they play a phrase a certain style while another violinist might play it completely different concerning the accents or the focus, the tempo etc and the artists develop a style which can be very distinctive. As well the technique Eddy and Brett are talking about, it's basically if you play violin you know what you have to do to produce a certain sound, so you know what technique the violinist is using when you hear the sound. Don't know if that helps :)

Brett & Eddy always have thoughtful comments to make on the videos they show. But, it doesn't seem to have any affect on their fans, who can't think of anything better to say than "Who's here from Two Set?" But, so many of their fans are just kids, so I guess that's why.

I love Two Set for bringing classical music, and specifically violin heavy classical music into the lives of so many people. I think what they are doing is nothing short of heroic I also believe Khachatryan is a giant in the making. But I can't believe they didn't put Oistrakh's Shostakovich 1's cadenza on this list. Oistrakh OWNS that cadenza. For those who haven't seen his interpretation, please watch it. Shostakovich wrote this piece when he had fallen on the wrong side of the Soviet regime, and was living every day in fear of being exiled to some godforsaken Siberian gulag; never to return. Only someone who's lived through that same era, and dealt with the same horrors, can really pull it off. His interpretation is SO cold, so jagged and soul crushing, it's borderline savage. Just like the the time and place he was living in. I admire Khachatryan for trying to find his own interpretation of this piece, and I believe he's done a fantastic job. But sometimes, the bar is just set too damn high.

This video made me so happy. I love your enthusiasm for music and I love how excited you get when you hear Hilary Hahn. I met her once and cried in front of her because she is without hesitation my favorite violinist. Y'all are moving on up for the work you do to spread the joy of this music. Thank you.

Before I discover this channel, I was clueless about violin pieces. Now I'm glad that I recognize some pieces in this video! It makes a lot easier to jump in another recording. And even when I don't know the other pieces, it gives me a good reason to look them up. Thank you 2set violin 🎻💕
