It is so funny how 380 is talked about like it’s a water pistol and how superior the 9 mm is I remember in the 80’s 9 mm was junk and they created a 10 mm it was to much and made it a short 40 S&w which is basically what a 9 is to a 380 but the fact is that if you don’t have shot placement it doesn’t matter what caliber you shoot I have been carrying a 380 for 35 years every day and I’m confident it’ll do what is required

Agree. Most defensive shooting situations, which are usually the majority of police, end up with the defender panicking and aiming wild with heavy trigger pulling and tend to end with poor shot placement. Shot placement is everything and the center of the chest is a pretty good target. Of course, keeping your cool in such situations is quite difficult as well and should also be a consideration. I carry a 9 mm most of the time and alternate with a 40. I carry my 380 on the weekends or when going jogging. I honestly don't think there are many attackers who could take one 380 to the chest, let alone three or four. You see people getting dropped with 380's all the time on "The first 48 hours"

@@andrespaz989 1 range trip experience w/ my LCP MAX here: first shots on my LCP MAX were 2 mags of Underwood - bigger holes on paper targets and they were my first shots w/ this pistol ever. My 3rd Mag was Hornady Critical Defense which had a smaller spread and smaller hole in paper. Not sure if by the 3rd mag I was more accurate or if the Hornady was more accurate... more testing to do.

First, the FBI is not the LE Agency that uses their guns the most. Those are the US Marshalls and the US Border Patrol. The FBI is primarily an investigative agency. Secondly, a gel block is totally consistent from front to end whereas the human body lacks such solid consistency. Thirdly, penetration is nowhere near as important as where the bullet strikes. The .380 is quite easy to place head shots with. Those do not require 12 inches of penetration to be lethal. People need to see a variety of videos showing how many different types of .380 rounds perform in other targets such as a 25 pound block of clay.

Penetration still matters because you can aim the shot perfectly but if it stops short then it won't reach what you aimed at. For example in the 1986 FBI Miami shootout a 9mm bullet fired into one of the robbers stopped just short of the perp's heart. A little more penetration really would have helped. You really don't need much expansion, it really doesn't matter if bullet makes a 0.5-inch wide hole from a 380 or 0.7-inch wide hole in the heart from 9x19. Either way has the exact same effect of blood pressure instantly dropping to ambient. Ditto for lungshot, either will collapse instantly.

I like the Underwood copper fluted bullet for penetration but its accuracy is questionable. I believe its the non aerodynamic front end of the bullet that contributes to it. Its not perfectly symmetrical like a traditional hollowpoint or FMJ. As long as your shots are at close distance I think its just fine. He has remarked several times about how it tends to spiral to the right I believe it was. The farther away from target the worse it gets. For my 380acp, I prefer to use 90 to 100 grain flat-nose full-metal-jacket ammo or fluted solid copper ammo. The jacketed-hollow-point ammo I tried did not give me the penetration I desired.

You missed the best of the best I use in my .380's. In my Taurus TCP I load Underwood Extreme defender platinum a 68 grain fluted bullet, traveling at 1300 FPS, average penetration 13 to 14", totally barrier blind, awesome wound channels. In my Ruger security.380 I run the plus P Underwood 68 grain, same bullet out of a beefier gun, travelling at 1400 FPS, average penetration 15 to 17" of penetration also barrier blind, awesome wound cavities. Not cheap, but very effective, with the platinum running an extra buck a box, the bullets are coated with a dry lubricant to ease in feeding, and retard tarnishing. They've fed flawlessly in both guns to date. 😉

That would be great if true but it is factually incorrect. The underwood 380 ACP +P 90GR. JACKETED HOLLOW POINT gets 1200 feet per second and the XTREME DEFENDER gets 1,300 FPS also keep in mind you are using shorter barreled guns than they test with so your actual speed is well below that.

Listen, in the real world a .380 is still a huge sized round, it's .35 cal, that's a big hole, wider than most rifle rounds, including the AK47. It's slow and not powerful compared to a rifle but it's a big projectile and will drop anything that moves. What's more important is getting a handgun that I like. I have a few standard 9x19mm handguns that I like, however when I carry my .380 I feel no less confident. All the difference is a little power and little velocity, it's still a huge round and will stop any threat. Relax people and stop obsessing so much.

Just an FYI, HST (according to a Federal bullet engineer who helped design it) stands for "Hydra-Shok Two". It's the second generation of the Hydra-Shok projectile. Hydra-Shok Deep is the third. Myself, I switched from HSTs in my LCP to Barnes TAC-XP solid copper hollowpoints.

Much better choice, the HST need to be going 1,200 FPS to fully expand, and that’s almost impossible to get from a 2.8 inch barrel. They also have issues with the hollow cavity clogging with clothing, plywood, or sheet rock, and turning into a FMJ and over penetrating. I use the Underwood Xtreme Defender +P which is also a solid copper, monolithic bullet, except it’s fluted which creates a larger wound cavity through hydrostatic pressure from the spinning fluted bullet. It will get 15” of penetration and 10% gel after going through barriers passing the FBI test for penetration & wound cavity increase over bullet diameter. I use Federal HST in my 9mm, outstanding bullet when driven fast but not the .380.

Barnes tac xp is only recommended for 9mm. It is not able to penetrate 12 inches in 380.

With any smaller caliber, bullet placement is key. Central nervous system or the heart. Case in point the 22LR used in vietnam as assasination bullet. Also dont forget the 380 is easier to shoot thereby allowing a more controlled well placed shot. I dont carry one but they sure do shoot sweet.

You right. I bought a walther pk380 just fired it lately. Have not been to the range in years and I did it at ranch. Hit a 4 inch knot at 20 yards easy . I have a 22 too and recoil was almost the same as the 380.

A .380 gun doesn't need to be as robust as a 9mm. The parts and thickness can be smaller because the lower power. Just look at the Ruger LCP .380 and the Ruger LC9. The 9mm LC9 is bigger.

The diameter of a 380 and a 9mm are the same. Only difference is length and power, neither of which affect how many rounds you can stack in the same height and width.

Hst overpenetrates due to being too heavy. But it beats using fmj by a little bit. If you're dead stuck on hollows, sig v crown and Hornady ftx only and not the other Hornady junk, are the only ones to stay within the penetration parameter.

The FBI test is for a Duty round. Self defense rounds are not designed to pass the test, that's why most "Defense" ammunition even in 9x19 fails to pass or barely meets the requirements. The goal seems to be around 9"-12" penetration with good expansion and energy transfer. We need to stop comparing rounds to a ballistic test none of them are designed to pass. If you don't believe me just look at Critical Defense vs Critical Duty. One is designed for EDC for civilians while the Duty round is designed to pass the FBI tests.

When a gun is only drawn and not fired, 98% of the opponents RUN. They never ask what your caliber is. The diameter of a 380 barrel is the same as a 9mm. And shot placement is more important than caliber. Finally, a gun in you pocket even a 380 is better self defense than one you left home. Mine is so compact, it lives in my pocket out of the house. My neighbor left his 9mm home because just going to the gas station. As he exited the building 4 teenage punks were waiting with baseball bats. He reached for his appendix carry but it wasn't there. Mine would be. and at that range I have a 1" pattern.

My EDCs are the LCP Max and Bersa Thunder Plus. The best ammo for the Max is Defiant Munitions TCX. It was made for the Max and will consistently penetrate clothed gel 12 inches with massive expansion. Since the Bersa has a longer barrel I carry any of the top ammo- Critical Defense, Underwood Xtreme Defender.

It doesn't matter how 'powerful'' .380 acp can be because my S&W .380 EZ can't use +P ammo. With some exhaustive research I've come up with two rounds that can make the penetration requirement and can reliably expand. Sig Sauer V-Crown and Precision One's XTP loading. Fortunately, the S&W EZ has a 3.6" barrel so velocities will be greater than 'pocket' pistols. I would suggest that you look into Precision One's product. The came from a real no-name outfit in the early 2000 teens but have come a long way.

In general, yes. But for a tiny .380, according to a bunch of videos I've seen on YT (including MAC), it provides more energy but not too much. And don't forget, since the FBI developed it's gel standards decades ago, Americans have gotten fatter and fatter and fatter. I carry a Ruger LCP as my backup EDC, and I feed it Sig Sauer Elite Defense ammo. It runs just fine on that, and even in such a tiny pistol the recoil is quite manageable. I train for head shots since way too many bad guys these days wear body armor, and a head shot with a .380 at lethal encounter range will drop a bad guy just as surely as would a .45.

I have seen many 380 tests. Some shows the round was crap. And some show that it are capable at close range. Very few talked about barrel length. One test gave a result of 200 fps with a 1.5 inch barrel. And one with 1000+ fps with a 3.5 inch barrel. ?- how well will a 9mil work with a 1.5 barrel?

Smallish calibers like .380 *can* be ideal personal self defense weapons. Especially where conceal ability is required. Since most civilian self defense situations are in close quarters, .380 could be nearly perfect. That said, problems come when people try to get more from a firearm (or car or anything else for that matter) than it was intended for. So, before considering a firearm for self defense, ask yourself what kind of situations are you likely to face? How much shooting experience do you have? If I go with a larger caliber for greater knockdown power, what kind of problems might I have with over penetration? In all cases of self defense, your first goal needs to be getting yourself to cover-something that stops bullets-and allowing the aggressor to bring the fight to you.

I carried a Colt Pony as a backup gun as a cop and the dept. issued Hydra Shok. The gun actually liked that better than FMJ. I’ve switched to the Sig V Crown since it matches the profile.

I can't get past Winchester white box being on this list, as that brand in 9mm anyway, ( havn't tried 380 ) is really the only ammo I've ever had consistent trouble with, getting the occasional dud ever other box or so.

Lost all credibility when 50 grain liberty civil defense was mentioned...when just prior to that it was stated that 380s main fault was lack of penetration with certain ammos...this is the WORST for penetration

No you do not get more ammo into a smaller package the bullets are the same diameter as 9mm so capacity would also be the same.

You can fit more 380 in a smaller package because it is a lower pressure round and it doesn’t need as much thickness as 9mm

First of all the FBI standard is BS and has been proven to be. Most humans are not 12" thick front to back and anything that is going through 12" or more is an absolute over penetration risk. Secondly, stopping power in a bullet is based on two things. Hydrostadic shock (you can't get this is most non-magnum handgun rounds) and hydraulic failure (you punch enough holes in the body so they bleed out.) 9-10" of penetration and decent expansion is what is needed. Or a bigger hole. An accurate, stone reliable .380 with +P hollow points will do the job. Not as well as 9mm, 40, 45 etc. But it will still work.

How many innocent bystanders are injured annually by overpenetrating rounds from a self-defense shooter? I'm definitely not asking how many thugs got shot who were behind the thug being aimed at, or how many persons total were injured during all non-police shooting incidents. Oh gee. No data. Hmm. Probably pretty darn close to zero though. Then what's the big deal with insisting that bullets don't go more than xx inches in ballistic gel? Wasn't the FBI standard intended to ensure police shots reach deeply into a suspect? Isn't the whole bugaboo about more than xx inches a complete fabrication?

I can't resist to jump in... My carry is the CZ-83, kind of heavy being all steel, but it's a comfort knowing I'm carrying the gun (caliber) that triggered WWI. Who said the 380 wasn't powerful?? 😆 (I also load the Underwood, I think it is the best and most accurate -- and I hope and pray I never have to prove that!)

Solid cast is superior in 380. Don't waste your money or life trusting hollowpoints out of an underpowered 2 inchish barrel from a 380.

There are numerous 380 pocket pistols that do not feed hollow points and some at well short of 100% reliability I have a little Kahr p380 I just keep it full of ball ammo because it will eat it consistently

My first priority on concealed carry is concealment. My little Ruger LCP 380 is very small and the full metal jacket will penetrate far enough. My old 357 mag hydro shocks are too much but my 38 special is just right.

@rjcavazos89 the vcrown has proven to be a great rounds but some have shown problem on the 380 and 9mm multiple clothes test. I honestly now keep the defender in year round and have the civil defense by liberty for backup. Both the defender and civil defense have alot more velocity and penetration than the vcrown and on a 380acp you need all the velocity and penetration you can get.

I highly recommend the use of FMJ in a .380 ACP ammo, because of penetration. In bigger calibers like 9mm and above, you can use HP ammo of good quality, cause it will have the energy to expand and also reach the needed penetration. It's important to remember, though, shot placement and volume is the key to stop a threat. Do your training to hit center mass with a lot of rounds in short time possible. 10 holes will lead to more and faster blood loss than 1.

I use the sig ammo but you lost me when you put Liberty Defense on there. I had 9 out of 11 rounds of that junk misfire. When I contacted the company with photos of all struck primers the response was to send me two boxes of 9 mm.
