All of which described.. and sniff you up, then sneeze on you. One that's interested me is eating poop or garden soil. I have to assume from what I've read, it's minerals from the soil that's maybe lacking in diet if they don't care for veges perhaps. 🤷

@@johncain1727 Thank you so much! I think the nicest compliment you can ever give to a dog parent, is telling them that their dog is cute, LOL! He is a Swedish Vallhund. On the street though, the most common guess he gets, is exactly that: a Corgi/Shepherd mix because that is honestly exactly what they look like. I have seen the cross before and it looks uncannily similar to a Swedish Vallhund.

@@lydiawhitting5406 that is an excellent question! For some dogs it probably is a scavenger instinct if their diet is lacking. Although honestly, for others like Starbuck, it's probably just a taste thing. He also loves to taste soil wherever he wanders. My personal guess is that since the Vomeronasal Organ is in the roof of their mouths, he'll eat stuff around him, to enhance it's smell.

My former roommate’s dog used to crawl under my covers and sleep by my feet, or behind my knees. When I’d lift up the covers in the morning, he’d be on his back, still by my feet. I’d pick him up and move him to the top of the sofa back, he’d still be totally asleep. Don’t know where he is now, but I miss that little baby.

Our 15 year old English springer spaniel (who we lost last month 😢) exhibited all of these traits! The grass eating thing was an initial worry, however the vet said most dogs eat grass because they like it! One of the endearing things when she ate grass, was the immense care she took in selecting only the greenest and tenderest shoots! High class puppy she was indeed and very sadly missed!

I had a dog that we tried to teach the command “speak” to. Every time we command him to speak he sneezed. We lived in Bolivia for four years. “Salud” is what you say to someone in Bolivia when someone sneezes. This was close enough to “salud” for the dog to take that as the command to sneeze. A Bolivian came to visit us here in the states. He literally fell off the chair laughing at this he thought it was so funny.

Wow! Haha, as funny as that is, it is also pretty incredible because a lot of dogs struggle to tell the difference between words that sound similar, so your dog must have been very smart 🐕

@@FurPalsFirst I had heard that dogs listen to the first word of a command. That was what made me try this. Knowing that “Salud” and “speak” would sound the same to my pee brained Harvey. It really created a situation where I could create a really funny trick.

My job requires me to knock on doors and talk to people (NOT sales). My favorite part of the job is meeting new dogs! Recently, I met someone in their driveway and they were surrounded by their six dogs. One of them came up to me and jammed its nose straight into my crotch. She got embarrassed and apologized, but I am a dog person. I told her that it was OK, he was just saying hello. Dogs always seem to know when they meet a "dog person" like me. When I sleep "alone," i.e. when my wife is away from home overnight, my dog, Guinness, aways sleeps right next to me, not at my feet (4:37 in the video). He's a Rottweiler mix, 60 lbs, and too large to fit at the end of the bed. He starts off with his head on my wife's pillow. But when I wake up, he is usually facing the foot of the bed with his back to me (and snuggling up against me). That allows him to face the door, so I certainly believe that he is doing his best to protect me. Of course, this is purely symbolic. If anyone knocks on our door, he barks his head off until we open the door, then he goes and hides under the kitchen table! LOL I love my big guy, even when he's acting weird. Great video!

Thank you! I think I heard about the sneezing thing recently somewhere else. The circling thing - I thought was just to make themselves comfortable… so why do they do the “digging” action before they circle most times ? Glad to know reason now for butt in my face. My dog usually sleeps on my feet for a bit then move somewhere else. Very rare now I wake up with him next to me but when he is we have special morning cuddles.

Very informative well presented and edited. I own dogs for 35 years and I knew most of them but to be honest I never knew why they eat grass. I was also under the impression that they do to ease their stomach if they feel sick. Doing it because they like the taste of it makes sense. Pasha, our current best freind, does it often and he is never sick. I also understood the social interaction of crouch sniffing but didn't know about the interpretation of the pheromones. Thank you and keep it up.

Thank you! Pasha sounds a lot like Starbuck 🐕 a grass-munching dog, haha! It is also just a guess. But I wonder if maybe Starbuck might do it to enhance the smell, too. They have an organ in the roof of their mouth that they use to enhance their smell when eating scent particles. So I wonder if maybe he eats some grass, to enhance the smell on it. But that is just a guess, haha. Most likely, it's just as the vet said, it's because he likes the taste.

My ex-wife and I had two Airedale Terrier females when we were homesteading in BC, Canada. Not only did these two forty pound wonders chase off thousand pound Grizzly bears but when I was working they would sit together and watch me INTENTLY as if they were trying to learn and understand what I was doing. It was almost eerie ... I almost expected them to start a conversation about the project I was working on. Great dogs. RIP, Doggos.

@@FurPalsFirst They were AMAZING. We were the only homestead in the area which was NOT harassed by a rogue Grizzly Bear terrorizing the rest of the area one summer. We didn't even know it was around because our forty pound girls kept it away. Every other dog in the area was useless. When we were building the house, our neighbour came to visit with her new baby in a pram. She parked the baby in front of the house in the sun and our girls came over, sniffed the baby thoroughly then they planted themselves one on each side of her and DID NOT MOVE until we had strolled around and finished our visit with the neighbour. They were well trained as companion dogs but the protective instinct was all theirs. One time we came home and there were three bears and two cubs raiding the next door orchard. We stopped and let the girls out for a bit of fun. Those poor, poor bears spinning in circles to keep the dogs in sight then the ran like H into the forest after the cubs came down from the trees. Just another day of fun and frolic for the two of them. I had dogs most of my life but these two Airedales were the most amazing, courageous, strong, sturdy, smart, loving and caring dogs I have ever had. They were actual independent thinkers who were in a genuine cooperative, symbiotic relationship with us. In fact, they were smart enough to leave the resident Moose alone but would always deal with the bears. Many of our neighbors didn't go far from their homes for fear of the bears but we went wherever we wanted whenever we wanted and were completely safe and guarded by these two forty pound dynamos. Would love to have one more dog before I die but ... apartment living and all that. Thanks for your reply. Cheers!

We've had 17 dogs in our house over the last 20+ years, and about 1/3 of them have liked to eat poop. Yuckie as it seems to us, it's a bit of a genetic thing that we just can't manage to break 'em on, despite various diets for the group over the years. Three of the present four will do it - and it seems to get worse with their ages as they regress and become more instinctual. As I researched it I found that it's compelling to them because historically it was the way for them to get "nutrition" during lean times, getting undigested stuff back into their systems. Gross, but somewhat understandable in that situation - but sure doesn't explain why the youngest here now will follow the others around waiting for her "hot lunch" when there's food in the bowls, treats on the floor, and lots of other options! 😮

Wolves will eat poop (their own) 🐺 and for good reason too, they need to eat the parasites in it. But dogs no longer need to (their poop is now parasite free). But for some of them, that instinct is still clearly there in the form of general poop eating. Starbuck will sometimes eat duck poop, lol. Trying to tell him though, that he no longer need to eat it, for some reason doesn't seem to work 🤔😂🤷🐕

Put a teaspoon of meat tenderizer in their food. It seems to make the poop inedibly nasty (no clue why/how). It's completely safe in small doses, tasteless, cheap, and it completely cured my two dogs after about a month. It's been years since I've seen them eat any poop.

We have always home vetted our dogs,and they are very healthy.( our last blue heeler " Catdog" lived with us for 23 years before he passed) so we in no way neglect our pets, I'm just wondering why he does this and how do I break him of it? It could potentially be dangerous and I am concerned. Thanks.

We always had dogs, even when I was just a little child. Strange thing is that all my dogs always "stole" one of my shoes. Some dogs brought them into their basket, the "outdoor dogs" brought them outside, where I found them hidden somewhere or even buried. None of the shoes were damaged and I have no sweaty feet. Anyone any ideas? Could it be comfort them while I'm at work, or shopping, or sleeping?
@FurPalsFirst
@FurPalsFirst 8 ай бұрын
If I had to guess, I would guess it is because our feet have the most sweat glands per inch of anywhere on our bodies. Your shoes will have a lot of pheromones on them since they are secreted through our sweat glands, regardless of whether we sweat or not. And so your dogs really loved your smell!

Thank you so much! And Starbuck is a Swedish Vallhund. Hello from both of us in New Zealand 👋 edit: also just to add, Vallhunds are herding dogs. That is why they are surprisingly common in New Zealand. We don't have many predators in the wild, so we have less hunting dogs, but we have LOTS of farmland, so we have lots of herding dogs 🐕 about half of his siblings now live on farms 🐑

Humans do smell pheromones, we don't register them as a distinctive smell? There was a study done in Israel, where they interacted with people and shook there hands and every single person always smelled there hand after a handshake. The study showed that we do this because thousands of years ago we had the ability to detect these smells that we don't recognize anymore, but we keep doing this still? It's a neat study I watched it here on KZbin. Also what's your pup's breed? Very beautiful pup?

What a fascinating study! Very cool. Yes, it is absolutely true, our senses do register them even if we don't smell their odor like dogs. I probably should have clarified. Never take your dog to a dog park. It’s a giant injury, fight, or traumatic experience waiting to happen, and it might not happen the first, or maybe second time, but..too many owners have utterly untrained, aggressive, and very large dogs..

I remember when Starbuck was a puppy, his vet told us to avoid the dog parks because you just don't know anything about the dogs there. And so now, unless we're at a meetup being held at a dog park, we also avoid them, but social dogs also love them, so I totally get why people go.

Well, I can tell you that Starbuck used to have a best friend, Finley. He has featured in my videos in some of Starbuck's puppy clips. He is the same age as Starbuck and they played as puppies. Finley used to love other dogs. Similar in size to him too. His mother took him to a dog park every week. Then one day, a dog in there attacked him. Now, Finley will avoid playing with other dogs - including Starbuck (who doesn't understand why, LOL!). I wouldn't criticize someone for going to the dog park because I know there are situations where sometimes it's the only option available to let your dog sprint, depending on where you live. Like if you lived in Korea or Japan, you've have very few options to letting a dog sprint, which is important for them. But I'd tell anyone that has other options to strongly avoid them!
