The assembly presents the effect of exploring the grounds of the old synthetic gasoline factory in Police three times (from January 22, 2018 to March 2, 2019).
The Nazi synthetic gasoline factory Hydrierwerke Pölitz Aktiengesellschaft existed in 1938-1945. From 1940 produced fuel for the war purposes of the German army. About 600,000 tons of fuels were produced at the peak of the factory in 1943. Gasoline was obtained here from hard coal and lignite, coal tar and occasionally - crude oil. Hydrocarbons hydrogenation was used in the production process, so-called Bergius method, requiring high pressure and temperature values.
On the west side of the synthetic gasoline factory, Norddeutsche Mineralölwerke GmbH is located, a plant producing lubricants and engine oils. Paraffin and olefins - fuel distillation residue from the sister Hydrierwerke - were used as the substrate here.
Both factories covered an area of 200 hectares. Civil servants, forced laborers, prisoners of war and concentration camp prisoners were employed to service such a huge plant complex - a total of around 30,000 people. They were quartered in camps built around Hydrierwerke. They were: Nordlager, Pommernlager, Wohnschiff Bremerhaven, Tobruklager, Wullenweverlager, AEL Hägerwelle and KL Stutthof, a subsidiary of Pölitz. It is estimated that during World War II, around 13,000 people, mainly Poles, were killed as a result of hunger, illness, exhaustion with work and cruelty to torturers, mainly Poles.
HydrierwerkePölitz AG and Norddeutsche Mineralölwerke were repeatedly bombarded by Western Allied air force. As a result of irreversible damage, the fuel production process was stopped at the turn of March and April 1945.
On the factory grounds, among others coal elevators, fuel tanks, skeletons of production halls, watchtower, overturned chimney, anti-aircraft bunkers, single-person bunkers (Splitterschutzzelle, Westermann), tunnels and underground shelters.
In addition to visiting the entire complex, we also had the chance to come across an abandoned building by accident. It is possible that it previously functioned as a warehouse.
