To Be Clear: German Shepherd Dogs are renowned for their intelligence, loyalty, and versatility. They excel in various roles, from police and military work to therapy and assistance tasks. However, despite their many admirable qualities, German Shepherds aren't the ideal fit for every individual or family. Here are eight reasons most people cannot handle a German Shepherd dog.

I have owned GSD for 25 years. I have always been the leader, provided training, socialization and exercise. I love the breed and give my time to make sure I am a good leader. It isn’t difficult, it takes my time, attention and love. All dogs need a leader. My dogs don’t chase other dogs, cats, children, etc. I trained them to obey me. I am now 76, have a 2 year old male. I did train him personally and hired a professional. It was costly, but I use positive reenforcement and buy dogs from an excellent breeder. I get them at 8 weeks, chipped, and with early vaccines. He is very healthy, happy and protects me and my home.

ive had german shepherds for 25 years and the time you put into them pays off. Always reputable breeders and much exercise and now that im retired at 66 am with my 2 year old full time. she is a very smart girl but knows who is the leader. She is a true asset to breed but owners need to know what they are doing

I would apply your philosophy for all dogs. As long as we provide them a healthy lifestyle and meet the needs of that particular dog breed. I love GSDs. We rescue and alot of our dogs have been GSD mix. We even have a Border Collie Belgian Malinois. If we all put the effort into our dogs, we reap the rewards especially our dogs.

I have 2 GSD’s. One is 4 and our newest addition is 14 weeks. They require lots of work and love but so worth it. I love my boys. They are so loving and loyal just awesome dogs. 🐶 ❤

MY GSD puppy is the most high energy, high reactivity and high prey drive dog I've ever owned. And I grew up with GSD's in the 70's. For me, getting her to play nice with the cats was the most important training. For the last year the cats have followed her around when I take her for walks. They LOVE her !!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone that sees this thinks it's great.

I'm glad that there are videos out there like this one. Too often, I run into people that got a husky or GSD or some other breed that requires a knowledgeable owner providing leadership, exercise, mental stimulation etc. and by the time they are 1 to 3, I find out for many reasons including aggression and reactivity that they turned them into a rescue, or now on some farm. Or the husky that people leave in a crate all day while they go to work. These kind of videos help educate people BEFORE they choose any breed. in the end, the dog suffers especially when people pick breeds for their "looks" or they seem them on TV series, or they like the idea of having a GSD (like owning a porsche).

I had GSD, she was very protective of her pack (family). Her favorite encounters were with cats or small dogs. She loved chasing them, but if cat or dog stopped running, she sat and patiently waited for chase to resume. And all dogs/cats from our apartments building were her friends and were always protected (but sometimes chased).

I thought I had made a mistake getting our gs puppy. He has been a challenge for sure until......I learned he was trying to dominate me. I researched many training techniques and taught myself how to earn his respect and obedience. It's all about spending time training everyday. They thrive on our direction and love. I now have a bond with Gunner like no other!

I had a working line GSD once & found they take a lot more exercise & attention. My one was full on 24/7, she would only stop when laying on my chest. Which atb3 months old is fine, when she reached 8 months, got a tad tricky😂. So must do your homework, you should on any dog you get.

I grew up around GSDs , my boy was raised with a reward system of special toys, sometimes treats, lots of pets and praise. His job is walking with me down the lane to get our Mail. He then carries a rolled up tote with lightweight mail inside back to the house. He also helps round up our free range chicken flock. Socialization is walking trails, going with me to stores. The feed store is one of his favorite places.

I've only seen video to 2:12 and it RINGS SPOT ON! I brought home my German Shepherd/Golden Lab mix two years ago and she is everything I wanted in this mix; that I planned on bringing home for about 10-years before I considered myself "ready" for her. I bought a kennel 5 years before I saw a sign in front of an Arby's for G.S./Lab mix puppies. I was waiting for specifically this mix. I had a black lab years ago, Tanner, who was awesome; but very difficult to keep "home!" I couldn't bring myself to have him neutered and paid the price - he broke a 1/2" cable once and was nearly impossible to keep from carousing the neighborhood looking to get laid. There was a sheep farmer about a mile from us and Tanner would get lose and go chase the sheep. Once he came home with a butt full of bird shot from his escapades. One time our house was broken into and cleaned out. I have no doubt that Tanner was helping them carry my stuff out. An air traffic controller at the time... When we came home from work, Tanner was locked in his pen in the back yard - apparently put their by the thieves just to get him out of the way. So... this time I got "Chewy" (Chewbacca - she sounds like the Star Wars critter when she want's my attention!), this time with the German Shepherd blood, hoping for better results if it happens again. It's questionable!!! She is very loving and a ham for attention from EVERYONE! Every time I take her out among the humans - EVERYONE comments on how beautiful she is. I'm a PROUD PAPA!!! BUT... Intelligent, challenging, energetic are just some of her traits. As a 69y.o. retired, disabled vet (who was looking for a pup that would resurrect my former active life) I now have a HAND FULL!!! I take her out to play Frisbee every day just to run off her energy. Sadly, the as*holes that I got her from clearly abused her - I suspect that they slammed her tail and left front leg in a door as abuse due to her energy. She now has a limp on her front left leg and a curiously gimpy tail. When I first went to the "breeder," Chewy came right up to me and stuck her nose in mine - It seemed like an obvious choice. Wanting to have a dog to ride my bike with and explore the nature in Florida (a disgusting Sauna of a place!!!), it is typical of my luck to have another being to "care for!!!" that only wants, and wants, and wants - about every 10 or 15 minutes! BTW: tRump is a SOCIOPATH AND HAS NO BUSINESS IN THE WHITE HOUSE OR ANYWHERE NEAR "LEADERSHIP!!!" Welcome to America!!!

I have had 5 GSD'S. Wonderful breed. They are a full time job. But if you can do it, it is so rewarding to have such an awesome friend! Gunner is 9 and slowing down. I would love to have a 6th one but age and health are now my concern. Life would really suck without a GSD.

I am 76 and on my 6th GSD. I am a widow, so he is my best friend and only 3 years old. I had a female too, she died of old age 4 weeks ago. I will always have a GSD, but in the future will get a retired breeding GSD at 5 years of age. She will already be trained and happy to be with me as her retired family I just love these guys. I leave my breeder to inherit my dog if the die. Of course no appropriate family member. They do need a devoted owner. I am devoted.

Noticed a typical GSD behaviour at 1:10 to 1:30. When loose often checking on the handler. When on leach, knowing handler on the other end of leach, free to check around. Have had a couple of Shepherds. Highly recommend going to training courses with them. Not only for the dog, you always have to learn more.

My current GSD is 18 months old. Yes, he can be challenging at times but he is perfectly socialized and does NOT have a mean bone in his body. I made mistakes during his puppy months and so, sometimes he seems cautious around me. For the previous month, I've been back on track and aside from looking for other dogs to play with, he's just great!!! I refuse to use a prong or ecollar or choke collar - he has a flat collar and harnesses. For jumping and nipping which I wish he'd stop, I just starting using the "air compressed pet corrector" which gives off a loud hiss ( like Cesar Milan). It seems to be REALLY effective so we're on to something really excellent for the "worst" behaviour ( when he gets really excited, he jumps and "nips" people - he's TOO big for this so I have to put an end to it - and until I watched Will Atherton ( A FANTASTIC trainer in the UK and on KZbin) I didn't know how "corrector" worked......I also follow many of Will Atherton's training advice - well worth it if you have a GSD and you need 'support!!"

Granda had a massive GS dog which he rescued from a breeder, absolutely without training. My mother went daily to feed it and it tried to attack her every time. It was super protective of granda and attacked anyone coming to the house except me. My mother asked why the bugger came to me tail wagging and friendly. I explained that shepherds are a pack animal and understand the alpha male. She didn’t understand so I explained that the first time he came charging out of his kennel all teeth and barking I simply stepped towards him screaming back and punched him on his forehead. Now it knocked him on his ass and he spent a few moments shaking his head and considering the situation. I stood over him staring at him until he stood up and I petted him. We were great friends and that tap on his head reset many years of neglect in his social skills. He still attacked everyone else 😂 I do not condone hitting animals but the situation required some instant therapy 😂

I had to do the same thing when I adopted a 3yr female GSD. She was exhibiting dominant behavior and would not listen to me. She accidentally tripped me, and I swatted her on the nose. She got the message. Ever since then, she has been a loyal and wonderful friend and companion and has taken ownership of my disabled son. She never leaves my side. Even in the bathroom.

I adopted/rescued a working line GSD years ago and I went to the library to get books on them. I found a book written by a Canadian Police Dog trainer and it was very helpful. One of the chapters was about some people using GSDs as gold 'detectors'. It looked pretty silly to me, but I called my dog over and held my hand out, knuckles up, and let her sniff my wedding ring. In seconds, she began to drool as if a small tap in her mouth had been turned on and she very gently nibbled at my gold ring with her front teeth. I don't think she would have stopped if I hadn't taken my hand away. Has anyone else had this happen? Try it and see and maybe let me know. Thanks 😊

A few months ago I saw a lady in an outside mall with a gorgeous 6mo GSD that had it all over her. Seeing that she was struggling I asked if I could take the lead. Within 30 seconds he was sitting on my foot and leaning against my leg. "How'd you do that?" she asked. "I just showed you." If I was in better health and in need of a dog [I adopted a GSD rescue who is now 7 - 8yo] I would have offered to buy this beautiful pup from her. There's no shame in admitting that a dog is too much for you.
