James, if you wanna do a quick reload with the Mini just keep it level and hit the paddle without touching the mag. The mag will then fall straight down to the ground: you're ditching it anyway in the video. If you try to rip out the magazine then, yeah, it fights you because of the magazine retention detent thingy. Oh, and lemme gripe. People really need to watch the whole video, he still says the AR is the overall better gun (it is). I don't think any Mini owner, myself included, is going to disagree there. There's some stuff the Mini does better, but by and large, the AR does A LOT better than the Mini-14. Some of us just want a different experience. Totally different stock ergos, different system, operation, loading, safety, look, etc. I love my Mini, it's awesome. Mags are hella expensive and it has worse accuracy than a $400 Ruger AR 556, etc. I could keep going, but it's beating a dead horse. I still love my Mini as much as I love my AR. I've bought and sold rifles but these two stay in my collection and will stay there forever as far as I am concerned.

I have been considering a mini-14 for a new ranch rifle. In my state, I can't transport a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle even when I'm on private land. So when I'm doing farm stuff on my four wheeler, I usually got my savage model 24 in .22 mag/20 gauge with a shell strap on he stock. If something needs to be disposed, I jump off, usually grab .20 gauge buckshot, load, and shoot. This is rather slow and limits my range. Another quirky thing about my state is that the magazine is considered part of the firearm, so that can't just carry around a loaded AR magazine and load when I need to. So with a mini-14 I can just stuff rounds into the top like say a traditional hunting rifle but still have the semi-auto advantage of an AR-15....

I have five ARs and one Mini, a series 584. The mags for my Mini drop right out of the receiver when I hit the release, whether they're loaded or not. I've never struggled with it. Mine has the wood stock. I prefer the Garand/M14 style charging handle. It's easier for me to manipulate. The flat top AR lends itself to an almost unlimited array of optics options. Currently, I run detachable carry handles. The iron sights are very effective. The installation of a Tech Sights rear sight on my Mini put it on par with my ARs. My Mini runs all wood furniture, including the handguard. At a glance, it almost passes for a WWII era M1 Carbine. It has no prohibited features....no muzzle threads, no muzzle device, no bayonet lug, no pistol grip and no collapsible, folding or adjustable stock. It came with two five round magazines. It's 50 state legal, unlike my ARs. My Mini is much easier to clean than my ARs. The Mini doesn't have the barrel extension star chamber. The Mini bolt has two large lugs that lock into recesses in the receiver, like the Garand and M14. All I need is a tooth brush, a couple of oily rags, a bore snake and some CLP.

AR-15 overall better, but: 1. More conservative appearance 1:19 2. Modern (580s+) Mini14 have 5.5-6 lb triggers 1:58 3. Mini-14 can have folding stock since recoild assembly is forward of stock 3:13 4. Longer sight radius 4:05 5. Piston operated 4:39 6. Possibly accuracy 5:50 7. Cold hammer forged barrel, better durability 7:16 8. Can get all-stainless 7:44

1. through 5, yep completely true. No substitute for fine wood, nor piston operation. That said the rest is untrue, at least on the pre-2010 rifle i owned. I can hit a soda can at 200 yards, iron sights, with my Stag M4. On the Mini i would not even try it at 50 yards. Innacurate Af. Also the barrel on the Stag has a chrome bore. The Mini does not. I traded my mini in for a huge loss to get the Stag and i don;t regret it.

The entertaining thing is that, like the M14, the Mini-14 is an absolute nightmare when reliability is considered. They're obscenely prone to failures, just like their predecessors, and are generally less than accurate in comparison to the AR-15, which is an easy sub-moa with most of your quality ARs.

Ar-15 is a junk because was primary designed to be filly automatic but is only semi-automatic. Ar 15 Is just a mini-14 in form of ar15. I only buy an ar15 if it is fully functional, or to modify it to make it fully functional (fully auto) At least the mini-14 was designed to do what it do, to shoot in semi-auto.

@Charlie Charlie It's unfortunate he deleted all his comments. However unfortunately, I have to interject some counter argument here, since the M16 wasn't quite as well received, and this coming from one of my best friends dads, who served with C Co, 173rd Airborne, October 1968... If you know history, you know his tale gets pretty dark come November of that year (Hamburger Hill)... But I digress... Anyway, according to him guys were throwing their M16's under trucks and running them over so they could be re-issued their M14's. To this day he calls them "Mattels" lol. He is also the one who showed me how to take down my M1A when I first bought it and took it out of the box. I was pretty stoked to show him that rifle that I literally bought earlier that day... lol. Fast forward to Iraq and Afghanistan, where the M14 made a comeback big time as a Designated Marksmanship Rifle (DMR) aka, the M14 (Marines) or M21 (Army) which later became the M14EBR and is still in use. This was due to the lack of range of the M16/M4 variants, and that just is what it is. Can't replace the stopping power of the larger round and accuracy at distance. Also, if the target is hiding behind a car at 800 yards, the 5.56 may not be lethal enough once it passes through one door. The 7.62 however punches right on through and maintains it's mass instead of breaking up. It's just the better round for that type of thing, and in urban environments and considering the COIN (counterinsurgency) Operations, it didn't sit too well with locals to just open up with the 50 or the 240 indiscriminately. I agree the M16 is a great rifle, and I have slept with one (or one of it's variants lol) probably longer than my own wife. And that's just in the field during training. Down range my primary was a 240H, for most of my deployments. Backup was the M9... Pilots had their M4's. In "other" units I had 4 weapons with me in the hawk. A M134, M240, M4, and the M9... I had 9 mags for the M4 on my vest, 4 for the M9, and the M134 had 3000 rounds in a big ass 241 pound ammo can next to my seat. The 240 was bungee corded to my crew seat in case we went down, since back then they were a/c powered. But yeah. The 7.62 in general is making a huge comeback, especially in the socom community. Range and killing power matter. M14 is among those that are now common to see with the boys. That and the SCAR-H or M10. It's a tested and proven weapon. The action in it literally won the ground war in WWII... So there's that lol.

From a factory trained Ruger armorer, there is a list of issues that the Mini-14 has that makes it problematic for someone that is going to put a lot of rounds down range. From being an armorer (retired) for a major department that purchased, and purchases, hundreds of Mini-14s as their standard service weapon, I have seen the effects of prolonged use. 1st (and huge) When throat erosion occurs, you are not going to spin the barrel nut off and replace it with a mil spec barrel for around $100, you are going to have to send it to the factory, or to one of a few niche armorers (and since the gas block was redesigned at the 580 series there is a mismatch issue. ) It will probably be cheaper to replace the weapon. 2nd, if the cruciform in the frame cracks (and I have seen quite a few) the weapon is done. If a crack appears in the upper receive of a AR, again, it is repairable with readily inexpensive parts. 3rd, you can train a armorer to fix ANY problem with a AR, while with the Mini-14, there is an extensive list of problems, that are factory only fixes, or removes the weapon from serviceability completely. The AR platform is designed to be interchangeable, and in the field, a operator (not an armorer) can usually take two unusable weapons and make one operational, while the Mini-14 is not quite that simple, (I have seen something as simple as two cadets inadvertently swapping slide handles that resulted in binding that made the weapons unusable (until we discovered the problem), (I know that people say that the parts are interchangeable, but when you have a bolt that has mated to a slide for thousands of rounds, the two become "married" and will not operate properly with another). The Mini-14 for an individual officer, or a person who wants a weapon that they are not going to put tons of rounds down range, or they are not going to heat up the barrel excessively, the Mini-14 is a good weapon, the trigger is normally acceptable from the factory, and if it is not, it is easily correctable with minimal effort, and no replacement of parts, it is easy to clean, and with the field strip leaving most parts easily cleanable, the only hard to reach areas are the throat of the barrel, and the gas block (with neither being exceptionally difficult). But in the end, it is a personal choice, and everyone has a different opinion, that is why there are tuners on radios.

I got a state police trade in from KY where they put enormous amounts of ammo through these things. I did have to the extractor replaced once but ar15s parts wear out as well. The garand action isn't mass production family is true. Parts have to be fitted somewhat. When I needed the extractor I had to send the entire gun in but Ruger fixed it for free.

Baloney. I'm 71, shot Expert with both the M-14 and M-16 while in the US Army 1969 - 1979. I've also been reloading since my late teens. After the military, I have owned several Mini-14's and while they are more compact, none of them shot groups worth a s**t. Nothing shot halfway decent groups, not with factory or reloaded ammunition. My reloading experience was focused on developing accurate loads for a number of bolt action varmint rifles chambered in a number of different calibers from.17 through .25. In the early 90's, I acquired my first AR-15, a Colt MT 6700 flattop. It didn't take long to develop a decent load which consistently shot 3/4" groups at 100 yards. The best I ever got out of a Mini-14 at the same distance was 3" - 4" groups. That becomes 6" - 8" at 200 yards. Since the flattop I have acquired 2 more AR-15's, a Bushmaster with a stainless fluted barrel and a Double Star Midnight Dragon which, at 100 yards, will put 10 rounds into a group that can be covered with a nickel. If accuracy is not your main concern then a Mini-14 is ok for home defense and plinking as long as your target is not smaller than a 1 gallon milk jug. I know I'm probably being hyper-critical but I came up through developing loads for varmint rifles where accuracy at long range is the bottom line. In combat, at relatively close ranges, a spray and pray Mini-14 or a 12 gauge riot gun will work. I've already chosen a pump riot gun loaded with low recoil #4 buckshot.

@@jacka55six60 From reading from JRC we are both of older ages and have on par the exact same experiences in reloading the Mini 14 and with AR rifles. What you are asking could have many variables because every rifle may shoot somewhat different loads. Do want self defense loads for home and is your home next to other homes so consider firing a bullet that goes through your home then into the next home ? Then bullets under 50 grain that are soft points would work. If no fear of bullets going places, then go with bullets 55 grains and up will work but remember the heavier the 224 " bullet the fast the rate of twist is needed from 1 - 8 to 1-7 . I have one of my AR 15 uppers in the old 17 Remington that will kill any attacker invader in a home grave yard dead but the 25 grain bullets won't go through a house. The 17 Remington barrels come from MidwayUSA made by Shilen barrels. The Mini 14 can be sent to Carl the owner of Accuracy Systems in Barens Colorado for a barrel change to 17 Remington. So really the best for you is to buy ammo in different bullet weights then shoot it to see what your gun does best with because guns vary allot from same brands.

I have several of both ARs and Mini-14s, and love them all. Two of my Rugers are 190 series, and one is a 580 series. For the 190 series rifles I added a TruShot barrel stabilizer. It provided a slight improvement in accuracy, but more imoprtantly, the grouping size did not change as the barrel heated up. For me this was a big plus. The only downside to the Mini-14 is the fixed 1:9 twist, which limits me to bullets weighing 62gr or less. For me, the greatest advantage on the mini-14 over an AR, is that I can legally have one in my possession when I visit my in-laws, in The People's Republik of Kalifornia.

I bought a synthetic stock version which I like but may prefer wood for the more historic lineage look. If you buy one, get the gas reduction bushings from Accuracy Systems. They're about $25 for the set. If you keep the original bushing, it will throw brass about 25 feet. Your shooting partners will appreciate it.

@christopherbordelon5960
@christopherbordelon5960 2 жыл бұрын
@@tomolsen3420 As far as mold lines, you have to really look to find them but just looking at the stock you dont see them as they did a really good job of blending them in and smoothing them down. The finish is really nice and smooth. I opted to put a rail cover on the bottom rail as I dont use a bipod so that affords a bit of grip. For functionality, it does take a bit to work the rifle and the trigger group into the stock. Once you leave it in there awhile though it shapes to your rifle. If you let it sit up for a month, and then take it apart for a month and repeat, it finally forms up where its not as hard to put your rifle back together. Make sure if you are going to get this stock that you keep the metal heat shield from your stock. I had to order a new one because the little tab that holds it in place on mine broke while removing it. The only reason I say this is because if you dont have one, the gas blast inside the stock dirties up everything real well. Also the stock is designed for this part to be in place. As stated in my other post, cheek pad and butt plates are adjustable. It also comes with QD attach points at the front and rear and on both sides of the rifle and a rear sling swivel stud for peg style sling swivels. Overall Id recommend this to anyone looking for a new stock or something to use if youre wanting to save your wood. All of the Archangel stocks I have are awesome. I just wish they would included a set of red, white or blue crayons to fill in the Archangel Logo and Letters....lol

I own an older 182 serial number Mini 14 and the trigger is excellent. The gun, for me, is much faster to shoulder and acquire a target with then an AR15 or AK47. It's sights are excellent. I bought it new in the summer of 1980. I have put several thousand rounds through it and it has never jammed or failed to fire. I have used the AK47, AR15 and the Mini 14. I own an AK47 and a Mini and if I was to bet my life on any of the three, I'd take the Mini 14. As for accuracy, the one I own will shoot 2" groups at 100 yards which is more then good enough for what the gun was intended for. recoil is all but non existent. I have been at the range several times with the Mini and the AR guys laugh until they end up farting around with jams and that stupid charging button while my 40 year old Mini just keeps shooting. As for ergonomics, the Mini is far better. I have taught a few kids to shoot with the Mini and they all find it far easier then either an AR15 or an AK47. I guess to each his own. Myself, I prefer the M1 Garand, M1A and Mini 14 over any variant of the AR 15.

The 180 series barrels had a 1 in 7 twist. They are finicky but if you shoot 62 grain and up the groups tighten up noticably. Had a stainless 180 series that was getting 2.5 inch consistency at 100 yards with green tip ss109, and 1.5 inch with the 69 grain match. The skinny barrel may seem like a disadvantage but even though the barrel heats up fast , it can also cool fast. I know the spin rate was so high when we shot some 52 grain match loads the bullets disintegrated after they keft the barrel. I considered that the twist rate had quite an effect on the most commonly fired load 55 fmj. Which is usually what most shooters used and thus its reputation for inaccuracy became legend. Why ruger used 1 n 7 i assume they were trying to compete in some form with the militaries own development of the m16a2. They dreamed of having some customers in militaries (of which the most notable being the bermuda military and british royal constabulary). It was a mistake.

I have a 188 series Mini-14 that used to be a whip until I accurized it with the Accu-strut, added buffer pads to the piston to reduce the metal clanging and replaced the 0.1" original bushing with a 0.045" to make the brass drop within 12 feet. Supposedly, it's now capable of shooting 2 MOA but I'm not a good enough shot to tell. But it's a far better rifle than the purpose it was designed for. I probably spent $550 originally to but the gun and then another $125 to accurize and it shoots every bit as well as the new 580+ models. I am NOT going to spend another cent foolishly trying to turn it into a tack driver. I see guys wasting over $2,000 on their AR-15s when they could just go out and buy a Savage 11 for $700 and get an MOA shooter right of the box. I get the idea that most people don't understand how good shooting 2 MOA is. It means that you are capable of hitting human-sized targets at well over 400yds. Who even shoots that far? And even if the Mini-14 barrel heats up, how many shots does it take to shoot a deer? A hunter who can't stalk his prey to with 50 yards and then take it down with one shot shouldn't be hunting. This whole AR15 vs Mini-14 argument is silly IMHO. They are both excellent guns. My next gun is going to be a Savage 11. I need to find out just how bad I suck before I'm too old.

Points not mentioned: _______________________________ #1 Low sight offset. *A. Point of aim = Point of impact.* This is important for close range speed/precision/point shooting. Hostage shots, minimally exposed targets, etc. *B. Minimal Exposure / Silhouette.* Your entire head isn’t sticking up above the gun. That’s bad. Overlooked today, but not historically _- for firing prone/hole/trench/cover/etc_ _(similar to taking a bladed stance)_ Of course you _never_ want to be poking your head over _anything,_ but keep your head down and don’t get your head blown off are sound advice. What would that target size be? _• Eyes to Top of Head_ *+* _• Bore to Sights (eye level)_ ____________________________ _Eyes to top of head target size:_ _US Males Eye Height Stature_ _50th %ile 64.57” 69.09”_ _95th %ile 69.02” 73.62”_ _Ref Gordon, Claire C, et al (2014) 2012 anthropometric survey of US Army personnel_ _Roughly, 4-1/2”_ ____________________________ Sight Offset: _• An M1 Carbine’s sights are 3/4”_ _(Mini might be 7/8”)_ _• AR15 2-1/2”_ _• AR15 + high mount or piggyback 4”_ Target sizes: _• M1: 5-1/4”_ _• AR: 7” +33%_ _• AR+HiMount: 8-1/2” +62%_ Is that significant? In combination with bore offset? Some of us may have seen some footage of a moving target with an M1 pattern rifle slipping shots over cover. _______________________________ _______________________________ #2 The Traditional Stock _Yes, the fudd stock has some advantages._ *A. Retention.* The traditional stock is much easier to execute retention techniques with, fight with, draw close to the body beneath the arm, and fire. We’ve all recently watched the most well documented self defense trial in history. It involved a rifle. In the most dynamic positions possible. All of it was firing from retention up close. *B. Point shooting* Yes. Not firing from the sights. Firing from retention. It exists. Again, in the self-defense case mentioned, not a single shot was fired using the sights. The other incident mentioned, involving an M1 pattern rifle, involved advancing, while crouched, firing. This point shooting position? That’s your high ready. _______________________________ _______________________________ #3 It’s a simple gun. I would argue more intuitive than the AK with its safety/fire selector. Most people can be introduced to the mini and understand it pretty intuitively. The AR15 is a more complex design for someone unfamiliar with firearms.

Some years ago we did a reliability test comparison between a M-16A1 and a Ruger Mini-14. On the range we had ten of each for Agent qualification. (They fired 10 rounds for personal sight adjustment an 50 rounds for score.). We scrupulously cleaned and lubed all 20 in January with the intent of keeping records of how long each rifle ran without malfunction. Each weapon was fired 60 rounds each day for official qualification. The M-16A1’s choked across the board on the first Thursday. (180+ rounds) The Mini-14’s were still running* at the end of the year. That’s 300 per week per gun x 3 weeks per quarter x 4 quarters = 3,600 rounds each. (* = Mini-14 bolts were “sticky” during the last quarter, but still functioned 100%.) The first quarter cleaning was the same for both rifle models. We cleaned them and then used fairly heavy lubrication since the prior year we had experimented with the M-16s to determine how much lube provided the best reliability. Later, the agency went to M-4s which I understand were quite a bit more reliable. The above test does, however, demonstrate just how reliable a Mini-14 can be.

I purchased a Mini-14 for my wife and she loves it. However, about a 3 to 4 in. group @ 100 yds. was the best we could do with it. About 2 months later, I took it out again and was very disappointed in the grouping. I would fire a 3 or 4 shot grop, then make a scope adjustment, then fire 3 or 4 more and basically, I was all over the place. I was about to blame the scope but I decided to make a few more attempts with various ammo. I tried something different and that was all I needed to do. 1-1 1/2 in. at 100 yds., consistently. After firing one 4 shot group, I made one scope adjustment and now it's 2 in. high at 100 yds. which is what I wanted. I ended up putting the rest of the box of shells (12 rounds) in basically a 2 1/2 in. group with 2 fliers. I think I will keep the rifle, the scope, and stick with Hornady Superformance Varmint 53 gr. V-MAX ammo.

My son inlaw has a 5000 dollar AR he purchased last year, "very nice". But he can't keep up with me, and my mini-14 I purchased in 2015. My mini14 shoots as fast, and longer without a jam, than his AR. He has me beat on long rang accuracy but only because he has a 2500 dollar digital night vision scope. But take that scope off, and just use regular sights and my Mini14 beats his AR in accuracy as well. And the thing about the mini14 is that bad boy is sighted in straight from the box. You can load it and go straight to the hunting woods, it's great! And as far as reloading mags, I don't have as much trouble as you did in the video, maybe I'm use to it, but I can switch them just as fast as the AR, my finger just automatically goes to the paddle switch, and drops the clip. I also ordered a aftermarket utility rail that fits on the left side of the gun. It gives me a way to mount more powerful flashlights and lasers, which are dead on. I also have a scope that mounts over my steal peep sight, so I can use both my clip on scope, and my sights, which I like very much. Bottom line, mini 14 will hold up to pounding and constant use for many years with far less maintenance issues than any AR, and almost half the money as most AR's

OK I'm going to talk about two things you didn't talk about in your video. 1. Accuracy. First, the guns are over gassed from the factory. They eject spent rounds into the next county. The large chunk of "Steel Bar" that is on the Operating Rod and forms the "Gas Cylinder" which covers the "Fixed Gas Piston," hits the Front of the Receiver pretty hard with every shot, thus Repositioning it in the Stock with every shot, hence poor accuracy. 2 MOA out of the box is still pretty good and most Common AR's won't do that well. There is a simple fix for this, and Accuracy Systems International sells a Gas Bushing Kit for a few $ so that you can choke down the gas to where the gun Poops out spent cases right next to you, instead of across the Firing Line, and the Op Rod no longer hits the front of the receiver. You can also buy an "Adjustable Gas Block" for the gun so you can tweak the gas for whatever ammo you are using. My gun has one of these and I closed the adjustment screw all the way for the first shot so the gun would not cycle. Opened it one turn and the gun pooped out the Spent Case right next to me,,, and I haven't changed it since.2006. My gun is Sub MOA! Do understand that Minis take about 800-1000 rounds to "fully break in," after which they are an absolute joy to shoot. The Mini 14 has one other significant advantage over the AR. If your gun has a Wood, or in my case, "Laminated Stock," and you run out of ammo, You can beat the snot out of someone with the gun and not harm it in any way! They are just that solidly made !. Try that with an AR? I have AR's too, but if we're goin' into battle, it's the Mini all the way. Randy

The advantage to the M16 I found is that it was easier to break down for maintenance and cleaning ... but it needed it more often. I would like to see a Mini-14 in 6mm ARC or 6.5 Grendel. Plus it would be nice if it used modern ar15 mags like magpul or other quality after marked non metal mags.

I agree...I called Ruger and asked if they would make the mini-14 in 6.5 Grendel...they said NO! It was disgusting....I don't like the feel of the AR-15...I can't flip it off my shoulder like the mini-14...like a baton twiller HS girl...I'm very good at it...flipping a rifle like a baton and firing downrange...in about 1-2 seconds...and I'm now old and a senior citizen and can still do it.

+Rick: I bought a stainless mini in 1991 for 440. Inflation has about exactly halved the value of money since then. What can I get that same rifle for today? About 900?? So, is your amazement about inflation? (Because the rifles real price is about exactly what it was then).

The one thing you leave out is price. Checked the price of a new mini 14. You're looking at a grand bone stock. For a grand I can get an AR competition model and game over. I own both and love the Mini 14 but to buy one new today I would likely pass.

Love my mini14, run around 3500 rounds through it, dirty as hell but no issues, throw it in the mud or water pick it up a day later and pull the trigger. Liked it so much went and bought the mini 30. This one is also so much fun. ARs are fine guns but if I had to pick one for survival it would be the mini 14.

I bought a mini 14 in 1997 and accuracy was not an issue. 55gr target ammo at 25 yards with the 5 round mag Bill Ruger supplied was one hole I could cover with a quarter. Maybe I got lucky with a good rifle...maybe. I took it outdoors to stretch it legs to 100 yards. 3- 3 1/2 Moa with a light breeze. Never did use optics with it because I don't like scopes unless I'm going out past 250 yards. You can holler bull's*** all you want I can't stop you but it's true and I'm sure there are a lot of other people out there with a similar experience.

I agree I served 28 years 16 in the Ranger regiment the M4 and the Mini14 are fine weapons. I was trained on the m16 and it is great. But the mini is a great weapon as well. I would take the mini14 outside the wire any time. I think its easier to clean and maintain. There both fine weapons but you only get one. The ar is a little more accurate but in the hands of a well trained Soldier or Marine either one will do.

Excellent video! I liked your video and subscribed to your channel because I learned a few additional things about the two rifles. Personally I feel more comfortable shooting the Mini-14 since I grew up shooting the Ruger 10/22 LR, however I could see why the AR-15 would be better in combat, especially in CQB. Years ago I used to play a lot of airsoft, and trained with a retired green beret. Most of them prefer the M4 or AR-15 style.
