Goldens want to please their people. It is easy to redirect unwanted behaviour. Reward when they do the right thing. Such as not jumping on people or not growling to protect their food.

When your Golden is a puppy, get down with them while they eat, pet them, get in their face, beside them, and they will be less likely to be protective of their food. Also, play with their feet when they are a puppy, pet them, and they won't be aggressive if someone else touches their feet. Same goes for their tail and ears. Pull and play with them when they are a puppy. Goldens are meant to be with their owner, not locked outside or away from their people. Where ever you are, they want to be, right at your feet. I have never seen an aggressive Golden. If they are aggressive, it's because they have been abused, neglected, or ignored.

Totally agreed, there are many such ways that this aggression can be avoided, and yes seeing these shy cuddle monsters to be aggressive is hard to believe.

I’ve had my 9 week old golden for 5 days now. He isn’t protective with his food but he bites and growls at least twice a day when redirected from doing something he shouldn’t, like eating cedar bark or chewing on the legs of the furniture. I don’t’ play rough with him but he’s drawn blood 3 times. I only use positive renforcements, try to make sure he is getting plenty of rest and not over stimulating him. Our gentle play time and cuddles frequently get cut short because of the aggression he is demonstrating. Is there a possibility that his temperament isn’t typical of a Golden?
@RetrieverCare3 жыл бұрын
It's actually quite normal for puppies to show this behavior but you have to try to understand your puppy's body language and behavior more carefully because many pet owners mistake normal play behavior as aggression or laugh-off behavior that is a warning sign for truly aggressive behavior. It's great that you are sticking to positive reinforcements because that's what puppies expect.

@@RetrieverCare update. It’s been almost a month since we brought our fur baby home and he is doing great. His playtime, without getting overstimulated, has increased and he’s demonstrating a better bite inhibition. I have adopted a 3 yearold golden retriever who according to his original owners say that he is very kind with other dog and cats and iv obedient but very energetic, the problem is that neither of that is true. He has tried to lounge at my cat multiple time, he growls and barks at other dogs, every time we wanna play he immediately starts humping my legs and wont stop. Its honestly starting to stress me out so much as i have exams and other things that now i cant focus on because of the dog. I really dont know wether i should give him back or not as I honestly don’t think i can take care of him.

But if the people she’s barking at get too close she just tries to get pet. And she has only ever actually been aggressive towards our puppy German shepherd. The puppy always tries to play with my golden. The puppy nipped my golden on the nose hard and my golden got up growled and then did a small bark. Then she ran away.

Hi there, my 15month old golden retriever has recently started barking at bigger dogs. He has also had a few fights with certain dogs in the park. Every time a dog growls at him he seems to snap straight away and then the fight starts. How should we approach correcting such behaviour ? Thanks
@RetrieverCare3 жыл бұрын
It seems there is an issue with your dog's socializing nature, maybe there was a situation where a dog growled at your golden and maybe later snapped or attacked your dog. So just remembering that situation, a growl has sort of become a trigger point for your goldie and he is maybe trying to avoid that same situation but yes this is just a guess! Firstly try to find your dog's triggers and once you find them, set up a controlled situation to expose your dog to his triggers outside of his threshold. If your dog is barking, growling, or snapping at other dogs, you are too close. Wait for your dog to calmly notice the trigger. If he reacts negatively, take a break, then reset further from the trigger. Reward your dog for noticing the trigger but not going crazy - or at least reacting in a less negative way than usual. For dogs wearing muzzles (which is recommended if your dog is aggressive), squeeze cheese is a great reward that fits through muzzle bars easily! Repeat, gradually reducing the distance between your dog and the trigger. Start to ask your dog for easy basic obedience cues in presence of the trigger. I generally teach dogs that when they notice their trigger, their job is to touch my hand as fast as they can! Giving your dog something to do instead of reacting aggressively is your ultimate goal. There soon will be a more detailed video on such a topic so stay tuned :) Glad I could help!

@RetrieverCare3 жыл бұрын
Generally, dogs that nip when they’re excited are high arousal. This is a shorthand way of saying that these dogs are easily over-excited by things. These dogs often react with barking, spinning, and - you guessed it - nipping. So even though your dog is not a pup but still follow the steps mentioned in the video I'm linking here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHS5eIuPdqiDnrM and Follow this steps when your son is nearby since your dog is excited around him.

This will sound stupid but it works.. if anyone’s puppy bites too hard, just yelp. Not a lazy non convincing yelp but a full blown loud yelp like a dog would do. They KNOW what that sound means, it means “ow! you’re hurting me.” My 7 month corgi is super gentle because I yelped whenever she bit too hard and she always looked at me surprised and was more gentle after. They learn fast and dogs can take more than we can so what their littermates could handle isn’t necessarily something we can.
