OMG wow!!!! So I did things a bit different than I was planning. I bought two pumps from harbor freight for $8 each. Never pulled the pan (only 39k miles), pulled out 6 quarts of DIRTY fluid, I was surprised how dirty it was, nearly black. Then filled 6 clean quarts, then drained again after running the car 10 mins through gears, etc. I drained 4 different times and filled 4 times. Even on the last attempt the fluid was still far from new looking. But I decided to give it a drive, INSTANTLY the trans shifted smooth through all gears and the shudder was gone! I have been losing sleep over this for weeks. It wasn’t that hard to do at all even on a corvette where it’s much tighter working space. Not going to lie I was skeptical on this working. Before I had a hard shift into 5/6/7 gears and then a shudder after it was in those gears. Not it’s smooth shifting and shudder is gone. I pulled out 23 quarts total and put 23 clean quarts in. I estimate that the fluid is still only 75% fresh. My backup plan was if this didn’t fix it, I will drop the pan and change the filter and fill it once more. But I am feeling blessed that this did the trick! WOW thank god! The guy sold me the car knowing it had this problem, but clearly didn’t inform me. What a prick!

hello. good video. I have some doubts. For a 2018 Silverado 8-speed transmission, how much oil is needed for the procedure? How many drain cycles are there? In each cycle do you have to wait for air to start coming out of the drainage duct? Is it necessary to change gears while the oil is draining? I would appreciate it if you could clarify those points for me. Thank you.
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist 8 ай бұрын
The Silverado flush procedure takes 20 quarts of Mobil HP ATF. It usually takes three or four drain cycles… 4 quarts each until the fluid becomes clean… then you use the remaining fluid to top off the fluid level. You only need to set the fluid level carefully by temperature at the end of the process. Shifting in and out of reverse and drive multiple times might help a little, but the transmission is designed to backfill the clutches anytime the engine is running so the fluid will get flushed through no matter what. Thanks.

@@morganlively2517it is a permanent fix you’ll be okay. The reason they shudder is GM didn’t use the appropriate fluids in the 8 speeds. Therefor, many of them shudder. @@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist hey man, real quick question. Hard to find specific information online about this and will certainly call some other dealers and transmission shops tomorrow. I got my flush done today at Chevy at 62k miles after experiencing slight shudder on highway. I find out later after looking at my receipt that they put a “transmission conditioner” in. When I called the advisor told me he’d get with the tech and ask. Called back and said it’s a normal part of their flush and would help the clutch plates or something. I would NOT have approved this as I didn’t want anything other than ATF in my transmission. Is this something I should be concerned about and go back and demand a fluid change?

Yes if you get it nice and hot in between each fluid change out to ensure the thermal bypass valve opens. You can lower the exhaust from each side of the manifolds and the pan will come out, but watch out for those Y pipe nuts rounding off or chewing up the manifold studs on their way out. Use anti seize. If I were doing it this way I’d probably leave the exhaust in place, unbolt the pan and lower it then suction the fluid out each time then remove the exhaust one time to remove and clean the pan then change the filter. Thanks.

@@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist I did it today and it was a success! Never done this particular job but I’m also pretty mechanically inclined. No big pieces of metal but a considerable amount of metal “dust” like this gray paste. Cleaned it off completely. Oil was more burned than I expected to be for 35k miles although it’s a 2017 so it’s old. I did replace the filter today because it seemed pretty dirty. I can leave it or don’t mind replacing it again on the following change within a week. I removed the Y pipe completely but without getting it out of the truck. I disconnected both front flanges, the rear flange with the flex pipe and the mount that holds it up with the rubber. Made it super easy after this. Many videos of folks having this issue and GM has no clue, that is odd to me. I did not see what fluid you changed to, just that it was updated. Can you advise what it should be? Also if this is such a common issue did GM use the wrong or bad fluid in these vehicles? If so shouldn't it be a recall issue? Thanks.
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist 10 ай бұрын
The original fluid was Dexron 6 and as far as I know they had problems with the fluid absorbing moisture causing the shuddering to be much worse. So they changed to using Mobil 1 HP ATF which has different frictional qualities and helps to smooth out the torque converter application. The true cause of all these torque converter failures is emissions standards, they have to turn the torque converter clutch on and off a lot more than older vehicles used to, consequently the torque converter clutches wear out a lot faster. Thanks for commenting.

@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting boss jr This video is for a 1500 8 speed transmission, but the 6 speed also has some TCC issues too. However you said your truck is a 2500 so you either have a 10 speed 10L1000 transmission or a 6 speed 6L90....you mention spark plugs so I'll assume you have a 6 speed with gas engine. The 6L90 doesn't suffer from the TCC problems nearly as much as the 6L80 in the 1500 trucks and SUVs due to better lock-up programming. With the mileage and heavy towing for most of its life you're probably getting close to needing an overhaul on the transmission, but if the gears otherwise shift and hold ok and the fluid looked clean then a TCC failure can be confirmed with a professional scan tool, see 3:37 in the video for an example. I have actually had good success with fluid services to correct a TCC shudder on 6 speed transmissions when the fluid is dark and depleted, but not always. Sometimes the turbine shaft seal on the transmission shaft hardens and shrinks so you can end up with TCC apply problems when hot, I have had success replacing the torque converter and turbine shaft seal as well. It is really a case by case basis when it comes to transmission health.....again with the heavy towing for many miles I'd expect the transmission to need a light overhaul before a major failure which would save on the cost of parts replacements also. These days many shops replace the whole transmission unit because the unit comes with a better warranty.

@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist 7 ай бұрын
Well at 152,000 miles the transmission is probably due for a complete rebuild at this point… Especially if it is contaminated with debris from a torque converter failure. If the transmission otherwise shifts and works normally, and you’re doing the work yourself then I think you could get away with replacing the torque converter and the turbine shaft seal as well as servicing the fluid…. A lot of people replace the torque converter, but they forget to replace the torque converter seal… Called the turbine shaft seal…. It’s a green o-ring on the transmission input shaft, I often find the seal is the cause of most TCC shudder problems on the 6 speed. Changing the fluid won’t help with a leaky seal or a dirty/worn valve body, but if the fluid is in bad shape then it might help. The reality is with that many miles the transmission may have multiple problems and it’s risky to take it out and only fix one part of it. Thanks.

@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist 7 ай бұрын
That is correct… They switched the fluid from Dexron 6 which was the original fluid on all 8 speed transmissions. They changed it to Mobil 1 HP to resolve the shudder issues and then after 2019 all 8 speed transmissions shipped from the factory with the updated fluid already in them. Even with the updated fluid, I still see torque converter shudder fairly often and the fluid service fixes most all of them. Because modern vehicles are using the torque converter clutch a whole lot more than in previous years… It is really hard on the fluid and the fluid turns black a lot faster from the torque converter clutch material and heat. Thanks.

would this not cause long term damage? i've heard over the years that flushing fluid on an old trans can cause it to slip due to the fluid being 'too clean'
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist Жыл бұрын
That is a myth, mixed with a little bit of truth. The thing is, if your transmission was so dirty and neglected that fresh clean fluid would knock debris and varnish loose, it’s already too late and the damage was done long ago. The valve body is where the effects of debris and varnish would be found, sticky valves, etc. due to contamination… Also heavy amounts of debris can clog the fluid filter, but again if it’s that bad the damage is already done. The same logic applies to an engine, if the engine is so nasty and sludged up inside and you suddenly use cleaning chemicals, that sludge and varnish can come loose and clog the oil pump suction tube, but again the damage was done long ago due to neglect. The primary purpose of the fluid exchange on the 8 speed transmission is to change the fluid type, to modify the frictional characteristics of the fluid to allow a smooth application of the clutches…..imagine the difference between pushing your hand across a glass table dry versus lubricated with water or oil, your hand would smoothly glide across the surface, yet friction is still present…….otherwise when your hand is dry it would grab and skip….in other words it would “shudder” across the table. I hope that made sense lol. Thanks for the comment.

I just bought a 2011 Cadillac CTS-4 (6 Speed AT) a few weeks ago and it seems I am having a similar problem. It runs and shifts fine for the first 20-30 minutes of driving, but then it shudders like in the video, sounding like I am driving over those speed strips on the side of a highway. I can also feel the shudder coming from somewhere just below and slightly behind the driver's seat. Sometimes it shifts a little hard between first, second and third, but is fine going into fourth through sixth gear. Using the Manual mode helps with that a bit, but the shudder is still there, if that makes sense. I have heard it could be the torque converter, but one mechanic also said it could be a bad transfer case. From what I have seen in some Cadillac forums online, there was a TSB put out for these cars recommending flushing the fluid and replacing with a fully synthetic type. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes the transmission fluid, a faulty torque converter, or a binding AWD transfer case clutch can cause a shuddering sensation under acceleration. If it shudders under heavy acceleration especially through turns the problem is more likely to be in the transfer case. It is easy to verify this with a scan tool by disabling the application of the transfer case clutch. The transfer case fluid being burned can also be a problem. More often what I find in a transfer case bind situation is the tires are worn unevenly and that is the true cause. Check the tire circumferences with a rolling test. Mark the tires in the same spot and roll forward 10 turns, all the marks should line up at the same spot, if not the problem is in the tires. Thanks.

@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist Жыл бұрын
Depends if your Yukon has a 6 speed or an 8 speed….being a Denali it probably has an 8 speed transmission. On the 8 speed the original factory fluid was Dexron 6, and the prescribed fix is to replace the fluid with Mobil HP yes. In my video I first inspect inside the fluid pan and change the filter to ensure the transmission or torque converter has not already been damaged because a fluid flush won’t help if the damage is already done. If there are no other signs of torque converter or transmission damage the fluid exchange has a very high success rate to resolve TCC shudder. Thank you to The Trevinos for commenting.

Repeat under many different driving scenarios and try to pattern the problem….”Does it happen more taking off from stops or more when overtaking on the highway at higher speeds”…..”is it happening in only one gear ⚙️ or in every gear?” “Is it consistent or will it happen at random?” Etc… Also one of the first things I would check….”is it driven in 2wd upon arrival to the shop or auto 4wd?”

Mine is a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with 187,000 miles. I’m unsure about the history of the transmission fluid changes. I just bought the car. It has a brand new engine however with less than 100 miles. The transmission shudders while driving at speeds between 30-60mph. It shudders the most at 45 mph driving at constant speed when the rpm’s are at about 1.5. It has no problems shifting between gears. it just shudders while it’s driving at constant speed, not when shifting. The rpm’s mostly remain in the same spot when it shudders. Any thoughts would be seriously appreciated. Thanks!@@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist

I have to drive 500 miles afterwards, if the Shudder is still there, they will change out Torque Converter, if that does not work, I get a New Transmission. NOTE: First Multiple Flush as seen in this video is on me (Bull Shit), if shudder is still there the repairs will be on the remaining warranty. My Bumper to Bumper expired in 2022 (36 months), I purchased a Extended Warranty at my Chevy. Dealer just before the Factory Warranty expired. Zurich Warranty was $3,800.00 to purchase. Everything is $0.00 if all the warranty work is done at this Dealership, $100.00 deductible at any other location. GM has known about this issue for a long time. Class Action Law Suit (which I am going to join) is in the works. GM's problem, they can fix all of it on their Nickle. Only other issue was a small water leak on Back Glass, I fixed it on my own (so it would be done right). 2 recalls on the Software (minor inconvenience). I know about the DFM and Lifter issues. As you can see my Truck is over Four Years old now and I only have 7700 miles on it. (Burning the Tires off) Ha Ha Ha. Truck is a LTZ and I really like it, but........ Yes it was expensive, Stickered at nearly $70,000.00 I did a 4 Year Lease at the beginning, bought the Truck just at the end of the lease for $35,200.00 All considered it still added up to $70,000.00 This much Money, GM can fix this and Mary Barra can just down size from her Multiple million dollar raises each year.
