8 strand round plait around a core

I have shown how to do the round plait with 8 strands in this tutorial:

What I wanted to do with this video is actually show you how plaiting around a core looks like. I used a dowel rod to plait around and I find it just about the right size for an 8 strand braid.
The color sequence when braiding is also important, because it will produce the color pattern. Keep that in mind when you are doing your plaiting!

I assume that if you wish to plait this design around a larger ( 35mm ) diameter, you simply use more strands, is this correct please?

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I have never done anything like this before, so know nothing about it at all. How do I calculate how many starnds I need, and what length they sould be please? The diameter I wish to wrap is 35mm and the length is 300mm.

I think I already know the answer, but I'll ask anyway... if done _without_ a core, would the result be a flat braid? I need to make a strap using 6 to 8 strands of 550 cordage for a cooler. Fewer strands than that, or a round braid, would probably cut into my shoulder after a bit. I'm a wee bit late to the party, but congrats on the book. I hope it does well for you!

When I said " How do you start it " I ment from the top . How do you cover the top of the core and then braid down, I tried with 6 strands forming a crown knot and then braiding down. I thought you might have a better idea.
