Just got my 2023 r3 yesterday. only 18 miles before it was starting to sprinkle. I LOVE THIS BIKE. Oh man. Thanks for your videos. I've watched them many times before choosing this bike. Keep up the good work!

This is awesome! I’m so glad you love the bike. I just passed 10,000k’s on mine over the weekend and I’m still loving it and looking forward to another 10,000. Very close to finally purchasing myself a 2023 R3. I have found it hard to find content like this regarding the bike. The added scenery makes the video even more lovely and I am enjoying every second of it. It's a beautiful place you live at- you're living my dream!

I'm 5'2", got an R3 as my 1st bike a couple years ago; they actually had a slightly lowered one at the dealership, so mine's a bit short 😂 I wanted to make sure I could stand flat-footed when I was learning how to ride. It's lowered in a way that doesn't impact the suspension though. I use it as a commuter mostly, but I've ridden it from LA to Vegas and back over a weekend, it's been through snowy conditions and Florida thunderstorms, & I love doin stunt stuff with it (still trying to figure out wheelies lol), it's never let me down. All-around great bike & perfect beginner bike! 😁

It really is a brilliant all round bike. You’re 5’2 and I’m 6’1 and we can both love and enjoy this bike. Testament to it’s versatility.

As an aussie reviewer I appreciate this so much more since I'm from qld myself and I know what the roads are like, if you are saying it's comfortable especially up north then it makes it more attractive than before

Nicely done . . . thanks! I'm one of those "returning riders" you mentioned. I sold my Kawi ZR-7S ten years ago, after ten years of riding it, and forty years of riding in total. My first and smallest bike was a Yamaha RD250 two stroke, and my biggest a BMW R100S - plus two mid-size Hondas, a Suzuki, and the Kawi. I'm moving from southern Arizona to southern California next month, and it's clear to me that I need one last bike . . . and this beautiful little monster is it! So, ironically, I'll begin and end my motorbike riding days on both the same marque, and with the two smallest machines I've ever owned. I am really looking forward to getting back in the saddle! 😎

Right on, getting back after a very long hiatus. First bike (the wrong one) was 97 Gixxer 600 ..R3 is the bike I need for the rest of my riding days.

38 years of riding and these new smaller cc bikes are so different from what we had from 70’s and 80’s bikes. It’s more than adequate for most riders. I can head up to copart and there’s a long line of crashed liter bikes more than anything else. Tells a story

I have one of these in red. I fitted my Quadlock by replacing one of the top (small one under the black cap) bolts. I also used the centre bolt mount that I modified. It fits perfectly and gives more clearance on the bars. The R3 is my first bike and I will pass it along to the Mrs when she starts riding next year. I am planning an upgrade to the R7. Not that I am bored on the R3 but I really like the look of the R7.

Good advice, thanks for commenting Martin. I have a similar plan with my R3, and also contemplating an R7 for my next bike but I may look at a Litre Ninja depending on how much touring I plan on doing.

R3 maybe be slow and on motorcycle horsepower. But when u used it in car power it’s 250-300 horsepower or a regular 4 cylinder sport car like the Honda Si

A lot of people who aren’t riders often can’t appreciate the similarities between a slow bike and a fast car. $8k bike is faster than $30k car.

R3 is still faster than alot of ur average cars u see out there, its 0-60 at 5secs stock, but u can get it down to like 4.2

Bought a 23 R3 less than a month ago, and pushing 1000 miles (1600+km). My body is sore from the new muscles, but overall I'd say the bike is super comfy. Previous bikes were a Ducati Monster S4R, and a 650 KLR. I prefer the R3... Even if the Duc sounded nicer. Around town the bike can be loudish if you stay down a gear (better engine breaking / "visibility") or quiet for say passing toddlers by shifting up for a moment. 7k rpms is where the sound comes alive, and in each appropriate gear that's just above the speed limit. Got a lot of flak for wanting ABS, so I'll add that in those moments it's felt in the levers, and without the pulsing felt in the levers, I wouldn't even know the system was engaged. Past bikes you lock a rear for a second and come out smiling - This bike I barely even notice short of the minor feeling that reminds me to be a better rider. That's kinda what this bike is best at though IMO. You get a lot of people saying the R3 is a great beginner bike, and I'd argue the MT-03 would be better considering riding position and full handlebars, but if you think you want a sport bike get an R3 - You can full tuck, or stiff arm it, and it handles noobish riding without creating more danger. Could it use a slipper clutch? Probably, but then how much longer will it take for you to figure out how to blip down without issues. Ultimately the bike is probably top 10 if not 5, or even 3 in handling. You can only corner so fast - isn't it more fun to use the other 95% of the throttle? PS: Grabbed front brake as I was beginning to accelerate and a parked car also decided to leave at that moment. Any heavier of a bike I would have most likely spilled, but because of it's lightness I was able to plant my legs firmly and keep it upright while still having some bend in my knees. (6'4", 193cm, 180lbs / 82kg). Also useful for drills, though I've had less negative experiences with those so far, especially when you can throttle out of pretty much any of those situations safely when your only obstacles are cones / lines.

My dad bought an r3 too, he's an ofw so when he arrived back home he tough the bike will kill his back but when he rode it he said it's a lot more comfortable than it looks

I agree, also I’m curious - is your dad tall? I had a shorter friend sit on it and was less comfortable than I due to him leaning further over the tank. I think the ergos really suit my build and height.

Im 5'11 and felt it a little "small" so unlike all the other videos on YT i have lifted the back end up a bit, actually makes it easier for me to get on the bike. 62 years old so don't bend as easy as i used too., yet to test the effects of the lift, got loads of bits to add on especially the twin disc mod, the ABS makes the brakes fell a bit blocky, also putting on wider rims. the R3 does weave a bit in a cross wind or behind lorries, so just overtake them. great video by the way.

how are you going with the R3 a year on? and how well does it sit on aussie highways? (at 100-110kmh) im thinking of going for my license soon and im looking at the R3 as a potential first bike :)

I love my r3 only issue I had with it is the long throttle throw hurts my wrist, found out you can use a factory r6 throttle tube to shorten the throw by about a 1/3. I'm stoked to try that out next weekend.

Bike is still going great. I daily commute with it now approx 70km’s a day. She’s got nearly 10,000k’s on the clock and I’m planning a new vid next week where I’ll do an in depth follow up review of the bike.

I need to buy a bike within the next 7 days for the purpose of going to work, shops, street and freeway riding in all types of weather conditions. I have no motorcycle experience. I live in Texas. Which bike do you recommend: Yamaha R3, Kawasaki Ninja 400 or Honda Rebel 500?

I may be bias, but I suggest the R3. For someone with moderate experience on bikes like as a kid on dirt bikes or similar then perhaps I’d recommend going a bit bigger but this bike is perfect for the genuine beginner.

i have never had an issue with comfort on the R3, though the stock seat isn't the best for riding longer than 1 hr. i have had to pull over to give my butt a rest. and i usually only ride that long during the summer, so it's not worth it to me to spend $300 on a seat upgrade

How have you found the reliability on the R3 I just went to look and sit on one ☝🏼 recently for my first bike. I fell in love and can’t wait to get it. I wanted the Honda Cbr300r but I think Yamaha offers more for a beginner bike.

I cannot fault it’s reliability. I now have 11,500km’s on the clock and the bike is still completely faultless and I still love it.

You can feel it, it’s not unnerving or unsettling though. I imagine it’s no different to any other 180’ish kg bike. After Your first couple of semi’s heading the opposite direction on the highway you get used to how much she moves.

i was rly inspired by 9:00 so here i am abt to make my first youtube comment ever. another youtuber mentioned that the engine breaking was quite strong and advised newer riders against the r3 in that aspect, praising it in most others. does it have an effect on u? is that sort of method of slowing down comfortable and how does it affect your usage of the manual brakes

Thanks for your comment. You get used to the engine brake quite quickly. I found on my early rides I was slowing down too much and too soon and having to throttle back on to get to the corners. I don’t find it unnerving or any kind of hindrance though it’s simply one of those things you get used to, quickly. Now that I’m up over 4000 km’s on the clock the engine brake feels like it is a little less, perhaps as the bike wears in she coasts easier, and for longer. On top of that, I’m riding a little faster as well and when you combine a worn-in engine with a more aggressive riding style you do have to apply brakes a little harder as the engine brake alone needs a little bit of occasional help. Bare in mind though that these 2 factors I’ve mentioned have been very gradual over a couple of thousand miles so it’s not something I’ve even noticed and didn’t have to overtly try to change or accomodate - it simply becomes your riding style naturally and intuitively. I highly recommend this bike, I absolutely love it.

Thanks for the comment Andrew. Mate as we come in to winter I’ll have a better idea and will perhaps do a video on this. Unfortunately I’m in the tropics and it’s rarely gets genuinely cold here - I’ve literally never seen snow, or even frost. I have noticed as summer subsides my Dririder textile jacket is a bit lacking in warmth so as winter nears I’ll pay a bit more attention to cool weather riding and report on it in a vid.

I have 2 conflicting thoughts on this, and you have to ask if the reason to do it is for performance or auditory aesthetics? 1. If it’s for performance - you’re spending a thousand bucks (or more) to gain a couple of hp’s at best. Are these extra hp’s worth the money? A new exhaust costs about 10% what the bike’s worth? 2. Yeah, the sound could use a lift, I think it’s a nice sounding small bike but it’s definitely not a beefy sounding bike. Having said that, remember as above, it’s still only a 321cc so not even a top high end exhaust isn’t going to make it sound like a big bike. In conclusion though - here in Australia you have to be on a small CC bike for 2 whole years before you can get a big bike. So even if it’s not gonna make it perform or sound like a big bike it’s possibly still something you’re gonna want to do to maintain satisfaction with a smaller bike for 2 years. So yeah, when I can afford it I’ll upgrade it.

hey ,I am a LAMS rider about to get this bike and I was wondering if it is Legal to put an akpo slip on muffler on it that Yamaha sells on their website? Also is it Legal to get a fender eliminator and indicators? I only ask as I know you work in law enforcement.

Nope. You can go wide open at any time and she’ll stay on 2 wheels. You need to do some serious clutch/throttle work to get a wheelie going.

I have a r3 2018. Last year of the version 1. It's the standard 41 hp. Some say the Ninja 400 or ninja 500 is stronger and better, Depending where you live the Ninjas US version have about 51 hp i think, And the Eu version ninja have about 45 hp, I'm living in EU so the difference in power between r3 and the ninjas is then about 4 HP , But as i understand in the US the ninjas have about 51 hp, So the idifference in power is bigger and more notable, What's nice about the R3 is it seems to be the same power configuration all over the world so parts for the engine are the same everywhere, And the service intervalls for the valve adjustments is at 40000 km for the R3, and 25000 for most of the Kawasaki's.
