8 Tips for the Laugavegur + Fimmvörðuháls Trail

Other than jaw dropping scenery, the Laguavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trail is amazing for the flexibility tent campers can have in their itinerary, which can be critical given the volatile weather throughout the hiking season. While I got rained on a few times, I really lucked out overall, but was grateful for the options I had to start earlier or later as needed.
Two additional tips not in the video: 1) Take advantage of the epic dayhiking and the wide variety of accommodations in Thórsmörk (including a sauna!) by staying there two nights. 2) Even with hiking the Fimmvörðuháls trail in one day, I still had plenty of time to make it back to Reykjavík on the bus--a better option than staying in Skogar. But truly a wonderful hike all around. I hope you enjoy!

Did this in August right after the Verslunarmannahelgi celebration (a huge party in Reykjavik). Very fun time to go, and I swear it was less busy on the trails than usual!

Hello, First of all awesome video! After reading the additional tips, I would like to ask you about the bus you took back to Reykjavik. I bought a ticket for one of the bus companies on Iceland from Skogar to Reykjavik (Trex if I am correctly) but this bus only leaves at 10.15 in the morning with a 5 hour stop at Hvolsvollur. Could you tell me which bus you took etc. I would appreciate it. Thank you!

I think there's also an afternoon public bus at 4:20pm on weekdays, with a connection. I did that when I came back from Skaftafell. Give it a look!

I am hearing "cats spine" section of Fimmvörðuháls is pretty hardcore... any tips about that?

Yes. While a little intimidating, it's both doable walking over or along the side. Just don't overthink it (I liked going over, and I have a phobia of falling). If it's wet/raining, see if you can do it with a partner or a group. Look up videos of people crossing it, and you'll see that it's not terrible.
