Reagrding the Trixie Spinner, I actually filled it with treats in a way that makes it easiest for your dog. Once your dog gets the hang of it, or even before that, you put the treats in the half without the adjustable dial; that way you can set the difficulty level at which the treats dispense. In the video I made it easy so the treats were already in the adjustable compartment. Another way to fill it is to set the dial to the desired difficulty, remove the handle (which is a simple turn and remove), you can fill the treats into the open hole.

Thank you so much, Sadly, Tonka passed on 2/9/18, and her littermate sister Pongo passed on 7/22/18. They were Judy months away from their 17th birthday. I was so blessed with them - they'd been found in a dumpster in south Florida! I volunteered for a rescue and I immediately knew I needed Tonka, but couldn't leave Pongo without her at the rescue. I was very lucky not to have female-female fighting around 6 months. They rarely "argued." My heart is still broken, but your kind, sweet words mean so much to me. ❤❤❤

We like the West Paw Toppl, in particular filling with PB, cream cheese, tripe, Greek yogurt, pumpkin, sweet potato, etc. or just simply treats or my dog's meal in both the small and large halves and pushing the opening of the small Toppl into the larger one to make the two halves into one unit. That said, West Paw wasn't out when we made this video years ago which is why there are no reviews of WP toys in this video.

My terrier loves the Kong Satellite. However, I put a bit of kibble in the side and top loading "arms" also. Sort of like a little getting started help. The little guy tosses and turns the thing until it's all emptied out.

Thank you for such an informative video. And your dogs are awesome! They're so polite with each other (well, for the most part...just a few gentle barks to remind the other that they are waiting for their turn!). Interactive dog toys have definitely become increasingly sophisticated in recent years, & there should be at least a few of them out there that will appeal to virtually every dog. You may need to start on the "nursery slopes" with quite simple toys with an easier pay-out of treats...once they've worked those out, they can graduate to the next level! I've found that the more opportunities my dogs have had to be exposed to this type of toy - which encourages them to really "stretch" their brain - the more their ability to learn & capacity to grow increases. These toys actively help to stimulate & develop their problem-solving potential. And mental exercise can only add to your dog's well-being!

I know this is an old video, but it's the only one I've seen that reviews these toys. I have a dachshund who breaks every thing, even those toys that call themselves unbreakable. Smaller regular dry kibble also can work well in these types of toys and may be used as slow me down feeders, may be better if you’re pet has GI issues and you don’t want to give too many treats....OR you can MIX regular kibble with high value treats

Great question. Depends on the dog and the surface. I'd say stay away from the Trixie Spinner. Maybe the Kong Satellite, but its not as much fun, and also can crack. Maybe the Holee Treat Ball, unless your dog shreds the rubber on the outside. Then maybe the Contempo Tessa.

I bought the Bravo years ago on clearance, thinking I would never use it bc my dog at the time would destroy it, but it has became a staple with board dogs and fosters-however I could not find it anywhere! Why not just use their food? I found the same issue with the JW treat toys- nice design and durability, but way too easy

Yes!! Absolutely use their food!! It's wonderful for enrichment. Dogs are built for seeking out so much action: negotiating relationships with other animals, avoiding predators, seeking out, killing, and devouring prey for meals. Now we take this animal who has been domesticated for just 15,000 years, put them in our living room, plunk a bowl of kibble down that many just gobble down in a minute, and then we expect them not to be bored and destructive. Feeding meals out of treat dispensing toys can be invaluable! :-)

This is a great video but I found myself fast-forwarding a lot because I think it would have been better without each dog doing every one of them. It got boring really quickly on each tester. That's not a slam that's just meant to be positive constructive criticism. I love these type of videos and you did a great job. Canine enrichment is so important. I just lost Tonka who was my service dog at 2 16 1/3 years. Her littermate is still with me and she's grieving with me. I will make another video soon with updated toys because there are so many on the market now. I have at least a hundred different types of games. My puppy has never eaten out of a bowl, she eats all her food out of treat dispensers or thrown around her room so she can scavenge for it

Introduce slowly with a really easy toy, like a Kong. Yes, they're noses will definitely pick up the smell inside each. I'd say the easiest to start with game-toys would be any of the Trixie Level 1 games, or one of the soft feeder mats (check Amazon, though there are super cool ones on Etsy). This also depends upon how destructive your dog is. You'd also want a quiet toy - nothing that crashes around. My best suggestion, and I'm sorry I don't know what it's called, but it's by JW, and it's simply a rubber-like ball about the size of a tennis ball with a hole for treats. If you use that, in the beginning, use high-value tiny treats for your dog. Lots of tiny sized treats available nowadays! Not sure if it comes in multiple colors, but I picked up the yellow since dogs can only see a range of yellow to a brownish to blue, based on a whole plethora of scientific studies of cones,etc. Download the app "Dog Vision" and it compares what we see next to what dogs see, side by side. Anyway, that JW ball is simple. Since it's been a year, I'd love to know what you ended up trying, and what works for you. Tons of new toys since I made this video 8 years ago!

Did i have some freakishly intelligent dogs or something? even the treat balls that were to big to bite they found a way to crush by jumping on them while they were wedged against the fence so they could get a purchase and eat the entire toy.

Try the Foobler. It just came out, long after I made this video. Hard to carry! Also a toy not in the video called Bob-a-Lot, I think. And the Buster Cube. The Contempo Tessa should be one of the better ones for you too. And yeah, my girls are pretty skilled at treat ball games. The more you use them, the better your dogs will get at figuring them out!

+yvonneost12 The closest thing I've seen is the Yuppy Puppy Gumball Machine, where the dog must hit a bone-shaped lever in order to dispense treats. Nothing I can think of where paw targeting with a separate piece dispenses the treat. Closest thing I can think of is modifying a Treat and Train/Manners Minder remote to make the area where your dog would paw target larger and easier for the dog to learn.

I have ceramic tile floors. Each of the treat dispensers that I have tried....the dogs will throw down onto the tips and they break apart....spewing treats all over and defeating the purpose. Is there a toy you would suggest to stop this issue?

Yes. Buy a 3" IQ Treat Ball and a 12" JW Holee Roller. Cut a slit across one of the hexagon arms on the Roller, fill the IQ Treat ball with treats and twist shut. Using the open slit, push the IQ Treat ball into the Roller. Now you have a once noisy treat ball whose sound is dampened by the rubber-like material of the surrounding Roller. The IQ Treat ball comes with a difficulty adjuster so you can change the difficulty too. Additionally, JW also makes a Holee Roller toy that is a rubber-like ball with hexagonal cut outs that already comes with an attached yellow plastic inner tube with a screw-on top, and you pour in treats essentially the same way, but comes as one unit. The only downfall is there's no way to adjust the difficulty, AND the hole where the treats come out is so large that treats fall out fast. With that one I duct tape over half of the peanut-shaped large hole to make it much more difficult for the treats to come out. I do believe I show this one in the video, but haven't watched it in years so I forgot. Other great options are a snuffle mat, LickiMat or other soft, quiet enrichment toy. Many people make DIY ones and sell them on Etsy. If your dog is not destructive, these are great options. One more free way to make a quiet but mentally stimulating toy is simply to take a towel or blanket, fold in half lengthwise, then roll it up into a cylindrical shape. As you begin to roll, drop treats all throughout the towel so that once it's in it's fully "newspaper delivery" shape, it is filled with treats and your dog will need to push it with his/her nose to unroll the whole thing and access all the treats. Or just take a blanket, unfolded, scrunch it up and randomly toss treats throughout so your dogs' job is to hunt through the scrunched up, dishevelled blanket to access the treats. Finally, also using a JW Roller of whatever size can make a cool game. Cut up felt fabric strips about 6" in length by 1" wide, place one treat in on end then roll that end up so the treat is wrapped in the middle surrounded by the felt. Do this with as many pieces of felt as it takes to have enough "treat-filled, felt sushi rolls" to stuff tightly into whichever size JW roller ball you've chosen. It's very quiet as there are no hard parts, and it will take a lot of mental stimulation for your dogs to pull out each and every rolled felt piece in order to get to the treat inside each. Hope that helps!

Hey! my new GSD puppy is having some sort of isolation anxiety, she needs to have someone from the family or my other dog with her during the night. The problem is that my other dog gets aggressive with her when she gets overly playful which is why we have had to separate them. The puppy is okay to be left alone during the day but gets very agitated when she's alone at night, she wants the adult dog with her for some reason. We haven't had such an issue with any of the dogs we have owned previously. I'm at a loss as to what to do! Would you have any suggestions or could you suggest any dog toys which would keep her entertained at night for a good 4 to 5 hours so she isnt bored or distressed?

Hi Ryan, that can help, but if the anxiety is that bad, there's a great book I recommend called "Don't Leave Me!" by Nicole Wilde that will teach you all about how to help your Shepherd be less anxious when you are gone. Other great resources are "Treating Separation Anxiety" by Malena DeMartini-Price and "Home Alone" by Roger Abrantes.

Personally I think you left out a lot of description for each of these toys to give us more pros and cons to compare. For example, the first two do not seem to be as mentally stimulating for dogs. They're essentially just nudging the balls out of the way and eating the treats left behind without any problem solving. I'm not saying they're bad toys, but there's more to consider in case anyone is looking for more details and cons before purchase. If you consider the Kong toys with treats jammed in there (or even with peanut butter) the dogs have to not only lick the outside but have to literally play and toss the Kong around to jog loose the treats inside. My 5 month old German Shepherd gets too excited for toys that are too simple to figure out cause he's left wanting more and he goes through them too fast. The toys that take him a good 20 min to go through really keep him calm cause he has to think and work about how to get them.

You're right! They have other Ethical toys now but I can't find any new ones - I did find a new one about a year ago but didn't like it so I didn't buy it. 😩 Thankfully there are SO many new toys in the past few years - an explosion, and great home- made ideas, too. It's a shame that the Contempo is hard to find...

They are both girls. And to the person who likes West Paw, at the time they didn't have any toys that were treat dispensing until they created the Toppl which is also awesome because I put the small one in the big one and fill it with treats or food. Eventually I will update this video with newer toys, but I lost my see your dog Tonka a month ago so her sister is grieving and won't really play with toys.

I used to use Zukes until they were bought out by Purina. Now I prefer Cloud Star Tricky Trainers. Lots of kibble will fit, too.

Lots of vets sell Science Diet and Purina, two of the worst foods for dogs. Vets know a lot about medical care, and very little about nutrition, or training for that matter.

Paris Bottari Of course he does, he probably sells it. Most vets know little about nutrition. My vet sells Purina but admits that it there are much better foods out there. Paris Bottari I used to see them a raw diet but one of my dogs has protein issues so now I feed them Sojos fruit and veggies and I mix in a protein like Evangers meat or chicken thighs cans. I'm very particular about what they eat. I add emu oil, a Probiotic, and coconut oil. Check out that website though, and click on 5-star dry foods. Then go to your local pet shop and buy the least expensive five star food.

I'm doing this video comment by voice so there are probably a lot of spelling and grammatical errors. Tonka, passed away one month ago, and Pongo is br grieving. as they have bonce I am over The Grieving part of Tonga, I will have my puppy demonstrate the new toys.een together for almost 17 years from the womb.not doshe will play with any games because she is blvd.. thing so she won't play with toys. I do have a puppy who will help me make a new video with updated toys. we have over a hundred different games.

Hi Jimmy, I don't think you have the right person. My dogs are not loud at night. They bark when they hear me come home during the day, and occasionally one will cry for a few minutes if the other leaves the house. They certainly are not "fucking loud" and they definitely don't bark at night because I'm home with them. If you have any questions about what I do with my dogs, come by and talk to me in person instead of randomly commenting on a video, although I doubt you are my neighbor. I know all of my neighbors. Your dogs are hella loud during the day. I've seen you a couple of times walking your dogs. My wife was thinking of poisoning these dogs they're so loud and annoying.
