Bait casters are not beginner reels, they get line tangle (backlash) very easily if you do not know what you are doing.

The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel kzbin.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.

You should include tenkara rods! It’s not very popular but is another type of fishing with a different type of rod 🙂

There might be a gap in your knowledge: Unless you're fishing for muskie/sturgeon in lakes (or, depending on your region, arapaima) then anything you will use in saltwater will be much, much too heavy. Typically, the heaviest braid you'd use in freshwater would be around 100 lbs, whereas the heaviest braid you'd use in saltwater goes up to around 200-300 lbs. If I had to give you a suggestion, I'd buy two rods. The saltwater rod would be much more expensive, but imo it would be worth it if you're really interested in it. For a freshwater rod, depending what species you want to fish for you could use anywhere from 8 lb mono for bass to 80 lb braid for muskie. Assuming you're fishing for bass, an Ugly Stik GX2 with some 10-12 lb mono will work great. For saltwater, I can't honestly recommend anything (I am unfortunately not located near any ocean) but at a minimum I'd get a rod that can wield 60 lb braid, and if you're going offshore, try to match your selection up to the fish you are trying to catch (you wouldn't use a shark rod for a mackerel lol).
