I agree with most of this Alcohol is not decor mentality however I think there are exceptions. My husband and I built a winery on our property and actually produce our own wine....we have the riddling wine rack from pottery barn with our wine (all matching bottles and matching labels). So it actually does match our home aesthetic and the winery that you can see from the adjacent windows and doors. There’s a right way to do it....

I love this! I have a lot of words on the art in my home, but that's because they are antique newspaper sheets, from the 1800s, and that represents me and my interests, which I think is what she was saying is okay. I am not well traveled, but my city has some old landmarks, so I took modern photos of those places and aligned them with antique photos of those same places in my home. The only traveling I'm doing is time traveling, but it makes me feel like I have some truly original art.

The thing about the rug where it’s hard. I designed my moms kitchen and this was a HUGE point of contention with her bc I attempted a ruggable BUT considering my mom cooks almost EVERY MEAL from scratch I’m talking home made pastas, pizzas, breads, every salad freshly chopped, etc... her feet get so painful if there’s no gel/foam. I had to purchase a “house of noa” printed pattern gel mat. Yea it’s printed it and not “textured” but it is still beautiful and very comfortable, so good for her joints. I think as a designer it’s important to consider beauty but also function. If it’s not functional it’s not livable. And that depletes the purpose of good design IMO.

Yes yes yes! I have original hardwood floors throughout my 100 year old house. They were part of why I bought it. They are however not comfortable while standing for hours cooking. I have 2 squishy mats in my kitchen, one is a solid color but a diamond pattern and the other is a print whose colors compliment my floors and my decor with no cutesy quotes on it. These keep my arthritic joints from screaming at me. *also I wipe them down every night so they stay fresh looking😊

Our dining room wall currently has beautiful travel photos hung on it- travel photos that we actually took on our various trips to enchanting cities and countries. So no surprises that the photo gallery has a photo of the Eiffel Tower that was captured by me on our trip to Paris, and that's what makes it special to us. In fact, every time we look at our 'travel gallery wall', it reminds us of numerous beautiful memories, woven across many cities and countries. So I agree, art should always be special to the family, and personally, we only display art that speaks to us.

As far as the plastic kitchen mats, most are filled with memory foam which is great for standing in front of a stove or sink for long periods. I bought some plain, cushiony mats from the hardware store and put them under my decorative kitchen rugs. No one is the wiser and my kitchen still looks great.

One thing I did with the clear candy jar issue is used only one. It's on a side table and filled with small, white stones which dressed it up nicely. This way you fill it up with a solid, neutral color that gets rid of that see-through space. Plus you are bringing in some natural elements by using the stones. The other two dishes went in storage

I remember an instance when I was cleaning/redecorating with a roommate, I started throwing away a bunch of the empty alcohol bottles we had displayed upon our high shelves. My roommate made a comment about not wanting to get rid of them and I responded "We're not 21 anymore, we don't need to brag about drinking" I will say though- I do have a wine bottle that I use as decor in my kitchen. However, it's solid black and shaped like a cat so it looks more like a little statue than a wine bottle. And fits with the theme of my kitchen. So to each their own

I do have a number of prints along with original art. Some O'Keeffe prints, a couple numbered original prints of paintings by a still-living artist, and more. A friend came over and chuckled at my prints, saying they "love original art" - so do I, but an original O'Keeffe? um... LOL. I love art and took several college level art history classes so... I buy what I can afford, and if they are prints, so be it. Adorning walls with art is a pastime that brings joy and beauty.

Oh no! Haha :D This is how all Americans sound when they holiday abroad, it's so funny. They're by far the loudest people in any space-- aside from African tourists. They scream out all their phone conversations and always sound like they're fighting with whoever is on the other end. And on dear, I'll spare a thought for the poor Japanese will need a paracetamol and a dark room when they return to their sound-proofed hotel rooms after a day of noisy sight seeing in Europe. ;) Oh, I'm kidding...gosh I miss the colour and energy of happy people shopping and sight seeing alongside me on holiday. In a way I disagree about words ≠ art when it comes to framing music sheets , lyrics of a wedding song, framing your nana's hand written letters or something personal. I agree with what your are saying about Bed Bath & Beyond basic like "kitchen" or something. (Except Christmas. For Christmas I go all out Merry Christmas, Christmas Lyrics & traditional poetry everywhere 😂) This is the 2nd video of your's I have watched and I'm in love. I also disagree about the words ≠ art for the same reasons, but also because there are some really well done typography posters/prints where they incorporate a lot of color & pattern. I have prints that say "F**K SELF DOUBT" in red on light pink & orange zebra print backgrounds, & those are a lot more interesting. However, a black & white print that just says "NYC" or "But first... coffee" is basic as hell & I get Kiva's point about that. (Although I would argue that ONE of those basic prints mixed in with photos one took of something interesting related to it - like their own NYC trip photos or photos of them standing in front of a Parisian coffee shop - that would be ok.)

I appreciate some of your affirmations. As a girl growing up in a greenhouse family in Kansas, I can't enjoy faux flowers with the wrong type of leaves or other "mistakes." Also, I don't need mountains or oceans in my landscapes. To me, it is the prairie that is beautiful and meaningful, but apparently not a lot of artists agree. I wind up with photos of local flowers.

I liked this video! Re my own home - I like to mix faux greenery with real plants, but I’m very selective when choosing a fake plant; my fake rubber plant cost a bomb but it was worth it. People are always surprised when I tell them it’s a fake. I bought it to cover up some ugly exposed pipes. I can’t put a real plant in that spot because they always die. I confess to having two pieces of word art, but they’re discreet. I have a photo with the Eiffel Tower in it. It’s a pic of my grandmother on her one and only visit to Paris, and was taken by my grandfather, who was a professional photographer. It’s a beaut!

IF you already have the apothecary jars (candy jars) and you want to keep them, I have seen them used beautifully in a bathroom. Bath salts - neutral colora with a silver scoop, soaps (the little bars for a guest soaps), and bath oil beads - again in neutral colors, look nice stored in these. My mother-in-law had these in our shared family mountain house in the master bath (that we all bathed in because it sat in front a window with a gorgeous view), and we could draw and 'doctor' our baths the way we found most pleasurable. The little hand soaps...we each chose one for ourselves for the time there, and then threw away at the end of our visit. They jars were displayed in the mirrored shelving by the jacuzzi tub, and it was very pretty. Candles, towels, and washcloths were also rolled and displayed interspersed among them, so we could take a luxurious bath, and have everything we needed within arms reach. We LOVED it!

Kiva, the plastic rugs are for cushion that aides while standing a long time. They are also used in. Restaurant kitchens. I have arthritis all over and feet. The mat helps. However, I did choose a nice gray/white one that added to the decor. It’s been a win win!

Words can be great decor, but not if they are stickers, wall decals or wooden signs that just say basic stuff like "Live, Laugh, Love" or "Girlboss". Mass produced decor like that comes across as very impersonal and tacky. Having words that mean a lot to you, like quotes, poems, scripture verses and positive affirmations, be it part of art or framed elevates the space more than a wooden or acrylic sign bought online.

Have them printed in black and white and frame them in black frames with white matting for a contemporary look. Also, pick moments rather than portraits. And don’t design your house with them...incorporate compositions into your house design. And, for the love of all things design, don’t use 16x20 department store portraits of your kids as art.

Black and white like the other reply suggested BUT... pick 5 to 7 photos you love (I disagree, they can be portraits mixed with events), have them enlarged 2 to 3 different sizes, and display them on a shallow shelf, (5 inches deep or so), in a hallway, stairway, someplace where they are an accent and not a focal point. Put the other photos in a photo book or if you can afford it have them made into a hard backed coffee table book for you to look at when you want to revisit memories. Not all memories need to be displayed, they can be lovingly preserved and them passed down to your children in book form.

Most the time I see these designers give you a take away of unifying the frames If the frames are all the same color or the same sort of texture it gives it more of a organized collective feel. It doesn't mean they have to all be the same sizes in fact to me it's more interesting when they're not. And just to be that renegade I'm the kind of person that absolutely loves to see family pictures in someone's home. To me it grounds the home but that's because I'm all about family. I'm in the theater and I deal with a lot of people who have that design aesthetic and they can show you ways to incorporate your actual family pictures and we see the love we see the art I think they can coexist. When people come into my mother's house it's all of us all of her girls all of the children the grandchildren it's moments. That is like the most valuable thing to us. I rebelled against the soda generic looking spaces that basically look like they could be hotels. And a hotel is great but I've done a tour and I understand that after a while a hotel is not a home. We need to have the human element. That's just my opinion I'm all for the pictures. It's just how you stage them

If you have the funds, commission a painting based on your favourite picture, Just make sure that the style the artist works in is what you're looking for and give them the freedom to change colors and details to make the painting look like an artwork and not like someone just enlarged a photo.

I agree. I watch a lot of real estate YT, and I’ve seen new, modern homes in the 10 to 20-million dollar range with a temperature-controlled, glass-encased wine “cellar” smack dab in center of the living room for everyone to see. I get that, when entertaining, wine becomes easily accessible, but a wine collection is not aesthetically pleasing. Nor are bars of any kind. I HATE bars. Nothing is tackier. One can always select bottles of wine in advance when guests are coming, and bring them out at the appropriate time, but the bulk of the collection itself should hidden away. Bar carts, however, ARE somehow both classy and decorative.

Oh Good! We're doing it right - we refer to our house as a mullet! - business (nice decor) in the front (entry rooms) party (nerdy stuff, cheap stuff, plastic stuff, collections) in the back (the basement and playroom). I work on replacing the cheap stuff as we can but having the nerdier and personal art that's not traditionally stylish decor is so fun to have to enjoy in our more 'protected' spaces - and no one will ever be put off or judge us for those items because if they're even in those spaces they're already our friends, LoL!

Kiva, wordworks have been there for decades. There are amazing artworks of this genre, and I recommend that you check out Ed Ruscha, Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, On Kawara, and Christopher Wool. That would have been a better alternative for 'art with words'. Kindly refrain from stating that art does not have words on them. Many contemporary masterpieces from the Pop, the Conceptualist, and the Postminimilast periods contain words.

There are many comments that essentially say "do what you like". Well of course!!! But if you are here it's possibly because you don't know what you like or you don't "like what you've done" ! (smile) Watching videos like this one helps develop an understanding of design concepts explain why you "like what you like" and why. With this understanding you can get better at designing your own space so you love it even more, save yourself some frustration (when you can't just seem to get it "right") and save money on things you thought you would like but now hate.

Target sells some really cute washable rugs with plenty of texture. They’re cheap also if you’re on a budget. I would suggest too shopping at antique stores if you’re on a budget. You can find some really quality pieces for a good price and intermix them with new items.

We bought my great-great-great-great aunt (bless her) a cactus for the only sunny window she had in a basement apartment! On our next visit it was slumped over deceased! I agree the plastic kitchen rugs are not attractive - I purchased mine because of the cushioning it provides for when i'm standing in one spot for a length of time (due to back issues) - is there a more attractive option that might offer that same cushioning on the feet and hence back?
