Aw man, I really appreciate this comment and more importantly am so happy to hear I could make a difference in you elevating your skills. Don’t forget about us little people when you’re making the big bucks😉 Honestly, what got me into engineering was NECESSITY. Almost everything I’ve done in music was a product of me being curious to learn so I could just do it myself without requiring other people. I think working with others is important and now I’m at a place where I do outsource stuff and collaborate more, but early on, when resources we’re thin, learning how to engineer to just mix my own beats and sound better got me going. Passion ultimately kept me there and got me to where I am now. I’ll probably do a video on this one day but hope it gave you some insight. Thanks again for the love! Truly means a lot 🙏🏼

@@5piece hahaha bro I think you will be taking the big bucks waaaaay ahead of me 😛 nah but that’s love - such a homie. That’s an interesting answer I respect the fuck out of that - and it makes sense too because I feel like as engineers we definitely get to exercise some of the “I make the decisions” sort of authority/freedom that I think as humans we crave .. within reason of course. It’s just so funny to me sometimes if someone wants a mix done a certain way and you know without a shadow of a doubt how to achieve that sound , in youe own way , that isn’t the loony way they are trying to describe it; and you smile 😁😁😁 “my pleasure / let me know if it sounds like you were going for” and if they are like omg it’s perfect - no one is harmed in the fact that they can’t see the DAW interface now that the song is printed - and it is exactly what they wanted - but you didn’t even do anything they necessarily asked for - Bc a non Engineer wouldn’t really know how to frame he request … aorrry for this long ass rant hahaha it’s just engineering so sauce and so unique person to person. But my original point like u said , when you are your own engineer it’s like you have a superpower- and all your music friends love you xD I would love if u did a video on ur background man ! I’m still a infant engineer - 2 years ish.. I spit too since I was way young but I’m not tryna get all side tracked procrastinating on dropping random songs when I need to first solidify my engineering haha - and beats / damn man ! There’s a lot to this shjt. I love it tho. Mad love from. Southern California !!!!

Amen - you spitting a lot of facts here. Us engineers do have a lot of power- but also need to be good at understanding our clients to deliver on their vision. Sometimes that comes with more freedom, other times it’s less (especially when a client has “demo-itus”) You definitely got me thinking more about making a more personal video. I definitely have some great content lined up that touches more on how to learn how to be an engineer coming soon, so I know that will help you as you come up. 5piece, i heard advice from Dave Pensado - he uses compression on reverb AUX buss before adding Reverb to make that parallel track more tight. Your thoughts about this trick?

Could work! I actually tend to compress my reverb after to make it a bit more consistent but doing it upfront is an interesting approach I’ll have to try 👀

Which reverb type would you recommend for vocals ? Room , Plate , hall or chamber etc ?😊.. Thanks

Boils down to preference. I typically have two reverbs: a plate and a hall. Plate is tighter and my preferred sound enhancer, but I also like having a really long ambient one available as well. Don’t be afraid to use more than one in a session! I often combine the two

Did you keep the reverb aux fader on unity gain and on pre or post fader?

It varies on the track and what I’m trying to achieve but I believe here the reverb is a post-fader send with the reverb send level dialled to a specific amount, rather than set to unity. I almost never have sends set to unity gain UNLESS I’m trying to figure out the sound and shape of the verb early on in a mix. Eventually though it does get dialled back (or maybe up!). I hope this helps!
