If one good thing can be said about 4Kids, it’s that their editing team is on point. All their edits are done with such quality that they look like the original edit of the show. Take for instance the finger guns vs Kaiba. The art style on the hands is the same, the colors match, and the lighting is consistent. It’s very impressive. Dumb, but impressive

Pokemon was heavily pressured for bans for much less offensive material. Due to the clash between cultures, Japan has had to create future seasons of pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and many other franchises, with american family audiences in mind from the start. Meaning, the original japanese modern seasons no longer contain anywhere near as much adult content, including a toning down of cartoon violence, so now if you compare both versions, the differences will not be all that much. Essentially, Japan is having to censor themselves, to please america. Even Sony is censoring itself to please american culture. In fact, Sony has closed down all of its japanese studios in favor of opening american studios, which means Sony is more american than japanese at this point. We are indirectly changing japanese culture.

When I was a kid, that date episode definitely confused me. It was pretty obvious that everything they did were things you would do on a date. What didn't make sense was how any of that was supposed to help awaken the memory of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. Glad to finally know what was up. Kids are definitely smarter than our society gives them credit for. They're still dumb, but underrated. Though I worry to what extent stuff like this actually makes kids DUMBER.

😂 though to be honest, all text is removed wether it's English or not because at some point they will want to remove some words, so for the sake of not leaving some parts of the anime with text and others without text, they remove everything to keep it even. Same might go for the soundtrack. They'd rather remove the entire music and replace all of it than to leave the anime sounding weird with a mix of American and japanese music. There's a handful of Japanese music themes that were too "dramatically heavy" for the American version, and replacing only some of those with modern american music would make it all uneven. That, and additional money might have to be payed to the japanese creators to licence the music, we all know music isn't cheap, but dubbing companies might be cheap.

Honestly I’m kinda glad in a way they focused more on the “What is Pharaoh’s backstory” the most. They made him want to see her belly button instead of her panties, not to mention a lot of scenes with him originally were removed until many years later. But besides him Goku got a lot of censoring as well in the dub that was made. I still remember when I first watched the first tournament where his tail grew back. The audience asked him if it was real and he literally mooned everyone to while showing it was real. In other words Goku would get it just as bad if 4kids were in change.

A lot of people don't know this, but FUNimation bought the Yugioh rights from 4kids and redid the first couple episodes with even the original actors to be much more faithful to the original version and removed the visual censorship, no obnoxiously loud music, and original Japanese cards. They wanted to do the whole series but it wasn't getting enough money. In it you can see Tea and Tristan do the bathroom scene right.

When it was started Business were meant to rise and be successful by pleasing the consumer with their services and products, however when they fell they were meant to fall hard and not be helped out by the government or other entities. They were meant to go fully and completely kaput and loose everything. Then after the fallout another business was meant to take its place and do the cycle over again. Sadly idiots in our government decided that it was wrong that a multi million dollar bankrolling business should fail due failing to please the consumers. Not only that but in the US a business is not ever started with the purpose of hiring people, thats just sadly a thing most businesses can't avoid because the owner cant do the job on their own. You seem to think 4kids chose to make all those edits for Yugioh? They were just following orders the entire time, which is why the excessive censorship in Yugioh continued long after they were bought by Konami. If you've seen the trading card edits you'll know that it was all Konami's doing. If you've seen the Pokemon anime you'll notice it was allowed to get away with so much more in the English Dub. Squirtle Squad (Episode 12) had everyone in a store pull a gun on Ash kept intact in English. 4kids actually dubbed the Porygon Episode, however wasn't allowed to release it because of the world wide ban. Nintendo wasn't ordering 4kids to censor the series any further than FCC requirements. If Konami tried pulling their crap these days with Yugioh on the Pokemon Anime, I don't think Brock would have his running gag. Not all 4kids series got equal levels of censorship, with Yugioh getting the most absurd amounts of it even though it was unnecessary. Then series like Viva Pinata & Pokemon got almost no censorship overall in comparison.

While I agree that a lot of these changes were ridiculous, to be fair putting it on Saturday morning cartoons in the first place was a stretch. Certain arcs like Duelist Kingdom only had typical edits (dialogue, guns, body parts, etc,) but others like the Battle City arc required heavy editing due to all the OBVIOUS death references (it was pretty plain obvious to me even as a kid that those were not "magical discs that would send you to the shadow realm.") Furthermore, the series as a whole was rushed because they were trying to make it the next success like Pokemon was. Dark Side of Dimensions was done much more smoothly as there were no edits and the only thing I feel it lacks (save the occasional SDA from a character, which surprisingly there were very few of) is that they changed the music (which even then, it was watchable; I have heard MUCH worse dub-made soundtracks.) As for the edits to Tea's character in specific, I wasn't surprised about most of them because at the time the show came out, it was considered the norm to edit anime because it was automatically labeled as a children's cartoon and most of these edits were ones found in other popular anime at the time such as Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, and Pokemon. I was, however, confused about the removal of her jealousy towards Yugi, especially considering they were fine with Rebecca and Vivian having crushes on him. While the relationship wasn't entirely removed and the little scene may have been removed for time (the US has a lot more commercials than Japan after all,) Tea actually IS Yugi's age. Vivian is older than Yugi (about Mai's age to be precise) and Rebecca is younger than Yugi (10 in the Japanese, 8 in the American) so this baffles me. I get that the show's main focus isn't relationships, but still I'm confused. LOL With that being said, I still have fond memories of it and adore the voice actors, though I feel there are other series that show them at their best. Slayers was a direct-to-DVD series that most of the Yu-Gi-Oh cast worked on and Viva Pinata was actually a pretty funny prelay show where they just got to be themselves without having to match lip flap.

Funimation tried to but they didn't know that 4kids was doing it behind T.V Tokyo's back so that's why we don't have a re-dub. Its likely that we won't get one because Konami owns 4K Media (Neo 4kids basically) and refuses to. DSOD is the most accurate translation of YGO we're going to get.

Im grateful for the dub because it introduce me to yu-gi-oh, but once i watched in japanese i could not believe how awful it was, in the original version the voices are better, the soundtrack is better, the songs are better, there is no censorship and you don't get a changed dialogue that butchers the characters like so many dubs (dragon ball for example). When is about yu-gi-oh ONLY go for the sub, i recommend the tag force games (psp) if you like the card game .

Actually, there are a number of scenes in the JP anime that were censored from the original manga. Every version of the original series (except maybe the English manga, I haven't compared it with the JP manga) has had some form of censorship. Going back to the Burger World scene, in the original manga the Pharaoh set a man on fire. In the Toei version of the same scene, the fire is an illusion. For another example, the Pharaoh is pretty damn bloodthirsty in the early manga (it got toned down later). Season 0 kept a lot of that, but toned it down a lot. NAS YGO toned it down even further (even though the manga already toned down the Pharaoh's bloodlust in the Duelist Kingdom arc), and then 4kids tried to expunge even more of it.

slifer875....although I prefer "Sky Dragon of Osiris" over Slifer, I agreed it's a cool name. And you do honor to the late Roger Slifer (RIP). Besides being a co-producer for the first season of YuGiOh, he was very much involved with both MARVEL and DC in various positions. And his crowning achievement was the creation of the the alien mercenary/bounty hunter Lobo (DC comics). And yes, your choice of the anniversary version of Blue Eyes is VERY COOL.
