The best thing about subtitles is that you still hear the original language of the original actors. It doesn't even matter if you understand the language or not, all languages sound interesting and beautiful in their own ways. In a good production, the actors are professionals and thus their voices are definitely a big part of their acting as well. If you simply dub over it, you lose half of the original work not only the actors put in but also what the director of the movie wanted. Not to mention, if a movie is located in ancient China, it most certainly is a more wholesome experience if the characters are speaking in Chinese, not in some other, totally random language. I don't really need subtitles with English language titles, but I'm happy I could grow up listening to Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Earl Jones, or Christopher Lee sound like they should sound, not like some random dude dubbing over their voices.

I wish you best of luck

Subtitles on everything is one of the reasons why Finnish people are usually quite good at languages. It helps to learn the language, and also when you have subtitles you know how different words are written etc. Also, the number 1 reason people move to Finland from abroad is actually love. Most people with foreign background moved here due to having a Finnish spouse, and obviously Finland is extremely supportive of families with children so it's just a no-brainer for those couples to raise their kids in Finland (I mean, the state pays you monthly for each kid until they reach the age of 18 so why would you raise them elsewhere). :)

The subtitles are one the reasons English is so good and widespread in Finland. They are there on every English-language show and they help the learning process immensely. It was a very wise decision to use them instead of dubbing (like in France and Germany). But you can turn them off in the TV settings. A little more difficult than Netflix and HBO, but still possible.

Thank you for helping the small and quirky Finnish language to live on, flourish, and cross cultural barriers! Your pronouncing is really good, but i think that the common mistake with foreigners speaking finnish (especially people whose motherlanguage is english) is that they tend to "prolong" words and certain letters, like when you're saying "perkele", you say it like "pherkhele". Finnish language is as "blunt" as it gets :). We literally say the words exactly the same way as we write them, so if you learn to pronounce every letter, you'll speak perfect finnish in no time when you're reading something. But your finnish is already so good that there's no point in worrying about it because everyone can understand what you're saying, and trust me not everyone can do it ;D. It's a bit off topic but: If you wanted a finnish person (who doesn't speak english) to read your name and pronounce it right you'd write your name "Deiv Khäd" ^^
@savannahfoote5924 жыл бұрын
I get what you mean with the "prolonging". I'm trying to teach my American fiance Finnish, and he's putting too much air behind his p's and t's and he *H A T E S* having to say a word that has an h in the middle. Like vihreä. The h turns into that throaty French hghghhg you know?

Finnish has a truckload of loan words from Swedish and German (and of course English from the last decades of English global domination). That's hardly NOTHING in all caps. Swedish might have also been good practice for pronunciation with Ä and Ö. Swedish also obeys the letter/syllable pronunciation regularity far better than the more or less totally random English. That's one good lesson for Finnish as well, where it's almost rock solid.

Funny fact about those nailclippers you mentioned. When i turned 18 and i was moving out of home, my dad gave me hes only pair of nailclippers and told me he bought those when he built hes house in -96. And i still have them myself. Fiskars for the win!

For me, the main drawback if I had to live in Finland is the long hours of darkness in the winter. I was born in Canada and have lived here all my life, but still have great difficulty with reduced sunlight hours in the winter. I have to take antidepressants!
@OliverJazzz5 жыл бұрын
It's unfortunately a very common problem for Finns too. :( Apparently using very bright lights during the winter helps, and of course spending two months+ per year somewhere more sunny, but most of us can't do that.

Hi, your finish is better than mine :) I've been studying for 4 month already, and the main difficulty - partitiivi. English was more easy. Nice to hear same opinion about Finland. Btw, hello from Russia. Someday I'll move to Finland by my own.

Dave... I think I can speak behalf of every (well almost) one of us. We love you! So cool to see how you try those really hard finnish words. We all know that they are next to impossible for any other but native finns. Keep on doing the vids mate!! Ps. Your finnish is getting better. A lot better. ( If you correct ANY of my english mistakes I swear to God....)

As a native Finn, never lived abroad, it seems so weird when everybody says Finland is *such a great country.* I'm kind of blind to it. For me this country seems just normal, not the Hell nor the Paradise :D

Great video Dave, I can relate to pretty much everything you mention. Regarding a good comparison with the UK, how come the weather is much colder, yet I feel warmer? Could it be better insulation and affordable heating?

I'm a finn and I also have english subtitles on for everything I watch. Sometimes the voice is muffled or I just missed something or it's a fantasy/scifi movie and I have no idea how someone's name is written. I mostly ignore them but they are nice to have.

The Iittala tumblers and Moomin Arabia mugs that came home with us from Helsinki over the years have mostly shrugged off punishment that IKEA stuff just can't handle. Chipped the rim of a Mörkö mug by dropping a cast iron pan on it, which would have destroyed lesser pottery. Need to come back for another visit sometime soon; I've only got one unopened 50cl bottle of salmiakkikossu left, I'm nearly out of Jaloviina and my attempts at making leipajuusto have all been failures so far...

The subtitles can be turned off on the TV settings somewhere and even changed to swedish (our second language). I think if you go far enough east, then there will be additional russian subtitles available on some shows. But don't quote me on that.

It’s a little charming you like it so much over here. I never felt patriotic and could imagine living as well in another country but just never got the inspiration to move. Actually some Finnswedes don’t talk Finnish at all or are very reluctant to do. Even some living in Helsinki or really close, within dozens of kilometres. And yeah subtitles help learning other languages really much. On the other hand I learnt Spanish a lot from the overdubbed tv while staying there for a longer period. Oddly enough I’ve heard Dr. House speaking only Spanish! Btw you can turn off the subtitles on YLE channels.
