There have been many comments that have been so close to the correct answer to the Les Paul Challenge. Its IS the pickups, but they are not actually mini-humbuckers that have the adjustable polepieces. Mini Humbuckers use a single bar magnet that sits between and below the coils. I have installed FIREBIRD pickups in my Epiphone Les Paul. A Firebird pickup uses two bar magnets (on their sides) with the coils of wire wrapped around each magnet and then wired in series to "buck the hum". This totally different magnetic field pattern is closer to the strings than a regular humbucker, and is brighter and louder for the same turns of wire. @Geoff Conwell was the closest and first and has always had my undying respect, and this challenge brings even more praise and glory to him as both a player and a true guitar nerd.

Great information. Will help me to clear up some buzzing on an old Memphis LP I just picked up. It is full of buzzes. Thank you very much!

I love the look feel and sound of the Les Paul. I just purchased "Eric" (an R8) to keep "Doug" company. You can see Doug in the recent video of the Artist TweedTone 12A. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4KziKd5o9qfprc

Is it that it is routed for regular humbuckers and it has a thicker surround to house the minihumbuckers?
@theguitaramptech2 жыл бұрын
Well observed, David. But, they're not minihumbuckers which have the screw adjustable pole pieces. SO close.

Apart from the p/up surrounds etc, the guitar is an Epiphone, which is not really "unique". Great channel thank you.
@theguitaramptech2 жыл бұрын
Excellent observation, sickofit! It is indeed an Epiphone Les Paul, and you're quite correct in saying that it is not unique for that reason. So what is it, then?

Les Paul Challenge: Is your bridge back-to-front?
@theguitaramptech2 жыл бұрын
Oooh interesting. Les. The bridge is NOT back-to-front. I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it, but that bridge is different to a stock Gibson Les Paul bridge. But, it's not what the challenge question was about.

Excellent observation, Curtis! It is indeed an Epiphone Les Paul with the metric screws on the bridge...so what have I done to make it unique?

Very very close, Geoff, but not quite. I love Fralin pickups, but I took them out and sold them about 6 months ago. You, however, will always win my praise and glory from me!
