Me and my husband had to start minimalism. There was one time he was like I DONT HAVE SHIRTS TO WEAR! I counted all his shirts that night and counted 74 shirts and 8 pants. I told him afterwards, he was very disappointed with himself. We started to sort out his clothes, sold some and then donated most. Now he has 15 shirts and is very happy with it. He gets to wear all of them in 2 weeks (just in time for laundry) and we have so much closet space! IT is the way to go

Hi! My minimalism journey began as a way to be able to keep my house cleaner. I also grew to intensely dislike the idea that middle class, like me, were the biggest consumers. It made me feel cheap and trashy. I love my house now that the rooms are clear of clutter and my closets are intentionally packed. Now, I can clean a few minutes every day and be satisfied. My garage is the only room left and I’m making progress there, too.

I was never a person that had a lot of extra clutter around but since I became a minimalist I’m amazed at how much I have sold, gave to someone else or donated, especially clothes that didn’t fit, it seriously was 3/4 of my wardrobe, now I have stuff that I’m happy wearing every day and less than 40 articles of clothing and I feel like I have more outfits than before. I don’t go mindlessly shopping anymore because I’m bored. I have saved money and precious time. Now I spend my time doing things that bring me joy and I have a little extra money to take an online course, purchase books or just get takeout. It’s wonderful and I’m helping the environment. 🤗 I love this lifestyle.

I have started my journey just about 10 months ago. It was hard to make my parents understand I'm letting go of all kinds of items that fall in different qualities, especially clothes and some even purchased recently. I wear loose fitting all black clothing now and I'm glowing because I'm so happy in what I wear and use and feel so free and relieved after letting go of everything else that I just didn't resonate with. Regarding things weighing us down - In my very minimalist apartment I had ordered a beautiful handmade piece of furniture (maple) 13 years ago when I did a complete renovation. It was 300 cm wide and 48 cm tall - It was a beautiful piece and I must have had a moment of madness when I bought it for close to 5,000 chf. The idea was that it hid all of my papers, photo albums, CDs, DVDs and at the time stereo equipment.This winter I managed to empty it out, letting go of many things and reconfiguring them in a few other already built in drawers in the kitchen and coat closet. This huge beautiful piece of furniture was now empty, and just sitting in my otherwise minimalist living space. I thought I could not possibly part with it after the money I had spent and I tried to advertise it for a month for pennies (comparatively). No luck. So I started calling people I know and making them aware that I was offering this piece of furniture to anyone who would give it a good home! The first person I called who runs a big home renovation business, and who has warehouse like office space said he would take it. He sent 3 guys up here yesterday to take it away. A reminder that sometimes it is necessary to let go of things without expecting to get money for the item (paying it forward) and not make the same mistake in the future. I probably could have gotten something half way decent at Ikea for a 5th of the price.The moral of this story is that now that it is gone, I don't know how I managed to live with it for 13 years - as aesthetically pleasing as it was. I now have a big empty space with room to move and loads of sunlight. Most significant is how it was weighing me down energetically. I had gotten so used to it being there that I never imagined what it would be like to no longer have it. Now that it is gone I feel so incredibly light and free without it.

@@SimpleHappyZen - my apartment is very small and the older I get the less I want (also read the art of Swedish death cleaning! ;) - I'm just about furniture free at this point. Dining table, 4 Danish chairs, and a Danish chair in the corner of the room. It is foldable and weighs nothing. Everything extremely light which is the idea. I want light! After sleeping on a futon for most of my adult life, I recently switched to the floor on top of a washable cotton rug and a thin folded cotton duve (shoe free apartment!). I have radiant heat so the floor is toasty. Sleeping on the floor is obviously not for everyone, but it has cured my back pain, and now even the futon has become obsolete. This whole process has not been easy. Its taken me about 50 years to get to this point. Better late then never! :) Thank you for your wonderful videos!!

This is such a good video. I often use the tip about imagining I wake up and something is gone. I have spent the whole day pulling my kitchen apart to be painted, and boy it has shown me how much stuff I have. The kitchen now echoes! That sound is music to a minimalist's ears! I'm going to be putting back a lot less than I took out. I really recommend completely emptying a room then putting what you want to keep back. It makes a refreshing contrast to the usual process of removing things one at a time. It makes you really think about what you are keeping because you truly experience how each thing you decide to keep adds to your possessions and 'clutter'. Of course, it's especially rewarding if you are doing it with a purpose like painting. I can't wait for my new perfect walls and emptier room. Bliss.

@@SimpleHappyZen It takes a fair whack of motivation because it's not a job for the lazy, but once you see the room totally empty i.e., 100% minimalist, it inspires you to get rid of as much as possible. It's so worth the effort.

I was on my way of living a simpler life I guess, when I found your channel, but I found so much more. Self love, self acceptance, the invisible pressure we put on ourselves by things we own/buy. Since we look at them and think I should/want to/ have to ...be/read/wear/FIT this. While it is much simpler. I “choose”, with “consideration” to my “needs” and therefore it will bring me joy AND growth. And it comes naturally, I don’t have to do force it. So, things like that. Minimalism has so much to offer. Hope I remember the lessons I learn.

About getting rid of things mindfully...as organising guru The Flylady says, your home is not a landfill. Get rid of the stuff in the best way possible, but don't let the lack of a charity shop or recycling stop you from decluttering, because getting rid of clutter is the first step on a journey that will lead you to have a much smaller carbon footprint in the future. Once you've decluttered, you don't want to waste money or fill up your home with tacky stuff that doesn't mean anything.

People, hobbies etc I want to invest in and some I can now see are simply cluttering my time. Amazing how decluttering helps clear your mind. I love your videos so much. You showed me the way I wanted to go, but have never seen before. During the first lockdown one year ago, decluttering was just a freetime activity. But now, after dozens of trash bags donated or through away I feel so much better. I still do not understand how is that possible that I decluttered so much and eventually, I miss maybe one item which can be easily repurchased. And now I am incorporating the minimalism psychological aspects and it came naturally.

I just subscribed after binge-watching some of your videos the other night! ☺️ I am very new to minimalism (stumbled upon my first minimalism video just a couple weeks ago). I am so intrigued and inspired by this way of living, and I have already made a significant dent in my possessions, which got donated to our local hospice thrift store (who were most appreciative)! I was honestly expecting at least some negative comments from friends and family - but it's been quite the opposite: many in my life are also on board with the concept of minimalism, and are considering making their own changes in their own way (and at their own pace)! I so needed to hear your words of wisdom today. I have been working hard to declutter (using your videos as inspiration) but yesterday I went back to my “old” self and went shopping just to make me feel emotionally better. My husband is unwell and is currently having scans etc at hospital - I must learn to comfort myself by not buying material things. This is my journey and I will find my way. 👊❤️

I started my minimalist journey during the Christmas break. I had no idea what a positive impact it would have on my life and how much more efficient it would make my house/life and how much extra time it would give me. My 'why' was just making it easier to 'deep clean' but I got so much more from it. Thanks so much for motivating me!

I have so much to say about how I live my life, realizations and challenges as a beginner minimalist. But one thing for sure sure stands out in my journey, that is, I'm starting to love the process. Everyday, I see to it that I'm happily simplifying my life. My girlfriend started to learn about minimalism and she's so excited about it. Now that's a bonus! Minimalism always reminds me that everything that I need to live a happy life is already in me. The most challenging part for me, at my current stage, is consistency. I guess "human nature" is the one who tempts me. 😁 Thanks you so much for sharing this!

I literally learnt about minimalism from you and I am continuing that path.. Often I have to listen that I have no respect for the items I have bought as I am discarding them. But I keep on telling myself that I am respectful to them, that’s why I am sending them to others where they will be of some use.

Another excellent video full of new information. I like the points that what you learn about yourself may be more important than whether you throw one item away, and there's no one way to be minimalist. Different people prioritize having only 100 posessions, or saving money, or spiritualism, or reusing what you have rather than buying things, or being slow to adopt new technology, or being a maker, or nomadism, etc, and they all lead to different conclusions and sometimes contradict each other. My minimalism has been about being able to fit everything in a couple pickup truck loads, saving money, and not adopting new technology until I have a compelling reason to. Others want to keep everything on their phone or have a tiny wallet with only cards (no cash). So we end up having different things but a similar motivation, and a different definition of success.

This was a great video, Vera. I've only stepped on the path of minimalism in 2019 and I feel that it is an ever changing and evolving journey for me. Everyone is different as you said and everyone has their own pace of doing things. For me it took a while to get down from the hoarder collector state to the level where I still have some possessions but they have deeper meanings now. I also agree that there's no right or wrong way to do this... only your way, and no one should be judging. I am taking my time and it turned out to be working for me as that allows me to really reflect on the things I own and the things that does not have any place in my life any more. Anyhow, I'll stop rumbling about things that you know yourself very much and instead just wish you all the best as before, this was a great video and here for more in the long run. ;) Gary

We have been on our minimalist journey for almost 4 years. We spent a month traveling around Portugal in a campervan with our then 2 and a half years old daughter and realized that we really didn't need a lot of stuff. When we returned home we started to get rid of things that we obviously never used and it was slow going at first. 2 years ago we moved continents and sold, gave away or donated most of our possession. We now have a home that is half the size and it still feels big. It's an ongoing process, we want to have more time to do the things that we like instead of always cleaning, organising or looking for our stuff.

Eight years ago I took the decision to declutter. Mainly out of necessity rather than anything else but it was the best decision ever. Today, I call myself a minimalist. I love a tidy home, few decorations and only items I find practical and useful (and pretty too!). I have a family and we all have our needs/wants and some how, it all works out. Because of constantly staying on top of "stuff", we fit in a 80 m2 flat and we're happy. :)

Minimalism definitely helped me simplify my life. It made me realise that I don't need a lot of physical things to be happy, which had a knock on effect on how I look at my job, income, etc. It also helped me become more intentional and grounded. I feel that for the first time in my life I managed to figure out what actually adds to my happiness, and what doesn't. This simplified some very important decisions for me, e.g. on buying a house, having children, etc. Vera, you share really good insights, and I always look forward to your videos for your thoughts and inspiration! I'm a minimalist but one wouldn't say so when one sees my house. It's such a personal thing..... what really caught my attention is your comment on WHY one wants to hold on to something; what does it say about oneself............ Anyway, I'll probably work it out one day. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.

I just love you! So much great advice. When I look around at what I want to accomplish...it is overwhelming. When I try to explain this need to my sister, to have and see simplicity around me and my need for a CLEAN and uncluttered home, her comment is always, "Oh Lynn, you are sooooo OCD." I try to explain the reason I am striving for this has nothing to do with OCD, but everything to do with a clear and happy mind, heart, and soul.. I finally gave it up and stopped trying to explain this need, because I am tired of being labeled neurotic or OCD. Maybe some of you out there are experiencing the same thing with family and friends and will understand.

I have many beautiful things and started a hobby that made me buy too much last year. I am often struggling with working towards an airy home, and not buying new things and filling it up agian. I learned that I need to respect the limits like a box or cupboard. It if fits in there in a good way, it's okay for me to keep, if I want and use the item. At the moment my hobby does not fit into the two cupborards that we bought and decided to be the limit, so I need to get rid of some hobby things. I realize I just create a problem with buying to much. Now I am selling some of the hobby things when I am done with them. You inspire a lot, and our home is so much more beautiful and calm since I started looking at you and Sarah at Abundantly minimal. You two get me back on track when I over spent or just put to many decorations up. I can let thing go after watching you two. I both give to chairity, friends and sell, it depends on the item and the time I want to spend of getting rid of the things. Your channel is so lovely. I should write under every video you make, but I just thank you every now and then. I love your content, and channel, and sometimes share your videos and look at them again. Thank you so much! ❤

I loved what you said about you are a Minimalist as soon as you say you are! I have been saying and thinking that for nearly 4 years even though people coming into my house would not think so as my husband is not minimal and I cannot get rid of our dark, fussy French style furniture which keeps me from the little more Scandi style I'd like. But I've been able to greatly reduce decor and pictures hanging on the walls and much less in closets and cupboards and drawers, so it still looks and feels calm and simple, in spite of the furniture style.

Create jewelry or crocheting or paintings, but I don't pursue these interests because I feel guilty for wasting time when there is so much clutter and disorder around me. I need to get rid of most of my paints because they've gone bad and dried out now. I do feel that once I have removed the things that don't mean as much to me, I will have time to pursue the things I love to do and to develop those talents by learning more about them and perfecting my skills.

Having to throw something away really makes you think about your consumption habits. I am by no means perfect and still have a ways to go but I wonder if the frequent mega declutters that have gained popularity are setting the best example. Like it's becoming a competition that encourages people to fill their spaces with more if that makes sense. Maybe that's why I'm partial to your channel. You're already well into the lower consumption, less decluttering needing to be done, enjoying life more stage. I've been moving at a turtle's pace decluttering because I've been working more on the consumption side of things. I do not want to waste or buy things I will regret.

Great video! An embarrassingly long time ago I decluttered my clothes and... They're still in a box to get rid of. 😅 So mostly it's about your first point of "mindfully" disposing of things. I need to sort out what could be sold, what can be donated, and what should just be thrown away. This year I set the goal to actually do it! Thank you for your inspiring video! 😊
@SimpleHappyZen
@SimpleHappyZen 3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes the biggest hurdle can be actually getting the stuff out of your house :) You can do it! I think you'll be surprised how quickly it can be sorted through. This is actually why I always recommend directly sorting the items into their different directions when decluttering. That way everything will already be in the right box with the right destination, and it'll be easier to get it out of your home. Some food for thought for the next decluttering round :)
