That 2 pole could have been feeding a multi wire circuit with a shared neutral, assuming it wasn't feeding a 240v load. May want to have a sparky check it. If it is, a simple breaker tie would keep it safe. Odd to have a 30 amp feeding no. 14 wire.

Well, when you've got guys out here charging $4000-5000 for a water heater replacement these days, it kind of incentivizes homeowners to attempt it themselves. I've seen some wild homeowner specials on water heaters, that guy didn't do too shabby at all in comparison. Just botched the flue pipe, that's where the lack of knowledge homeowners have can get scary. The backdraft would've melted that flex line in time and caused a major leak/flood. I would've tested his gas connections too on that thing just for peace of mind.

My mother had a carrier +90. It kept kicking out soon after it woukd establish a flame. She had several technicians look at it and they would clean the pilot and sparker assembly, but the problem remained. I decided to check it out myself and found that the condensate collector box was cracked, likely from rough handling during installation, causing the pressure switch to trip out. I replaced the box, no more problem.
