Both of my parents watched Magnum PI back in the day, so that is what I will always remember Tom Selleck for. It's weird seeing him now do commercials for benefits for Seniors. In my mind, he's frozen in the 80s, and still looking as he did on that show, and Three Men and a Baby. Though as a kid, I do remember getting him and Burt Reynolds mixed up.

Dang that Sears ad, it used to be the place to get EVERYTHING. Unfortunately we did see all the ways they changed and all the ways they hadn't! 35 years later!!!!

Sears- When that family first entered the Sears store, it looked like they entered a Hallmark store with that display of cards. United States Coins- I wonder how people would react if a giant coin rose up in the sky as if it were the sun in real life like that. Snuggle- I always found Snuggle's "Wheeee!" really charming.

I grew up with the Wish Book. When i got married and started a family, I bought a lot of my maternity clothes there. We furnished our daughter's nursery there. I bought a lot of Christmas gifts for my husband there, too. He still has those Craftsman tools. It's sad to pass by the mall and see that huge, empty space.

Nice collection. To me, William Windom will always be the guy reviewing ad layouts at the beginning of “Planes Trains and Automobiles” (and then again in the post-credits scene).

2:55: I love the use of Aaron Copeland’s “Appalachian Spring” here, which was, in turn, inspired by the Shaker song, “Simple Gifts.” The country definitely seen more like “United States” in the 80s.

Take me back to the eighties! I hate this current situation we are all living in. Everyone is taking themselves way to seriously. Jeez it’s lousy.

I'm glad I came upon your clip. I've posted my collection of William Windom appearances as well. I did have to remove anything with copyright claims.

Mercury-Four Tops sound-a-likes did a good job Mercury Cougar-driven by a"cougar" Dream West-must be one of those"epic" miniseries KPIX Eyewitness News Nightcast Update-the first story..wonder if it was brake failure..? or a drunk driver The Return Of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer-sadly,the syndicated revival later in the 90s didnt catch on either

I think it's possibly The Four Tops singing in the first ad, it's just a re-recorded version to avoid paying for the original Motown master recording.

@@80sCommercialVault I'm pretty sure that after Bette Midler sued (when they used one of her backup singers as a sound-alike on "Do You Want to Dance"), Mercury started shilling out for the real deal, even if it was new recordings.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midler_v._Ford_Motor_Co. The Wikipedia article on that case says that Midler was asked to sing a song for their commercial and didn't accept so they hired a soundalike. It's entirely possible the Four Tops were asked to sing for this ad and they took the job. To me the lead singer here sounds exactly like Levi Stubbs and sounds pretty much identical to their '85 Live Aid performance of that song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYfboJ6Gh81gbrc
