This is a HITACHI TRK-8190W, A 80's holy grail boombox. It was kept in good condition except the cassette deck. One of the main flat drive belt was melted away. So I replaced all drive belts and cleaned inside out.
Demonstration tape (Hitachi original)
1) Racing sound dynamics
2) Battle of Jerico
Total work time: 12 hours 41 minutes. Started from Feb-01-2018 and ended Feb-06-2018.
Enjoy!!

Special thanks to the boombox collector Pedro.

Just happened upon this restoration after 4 years since it was done. I wish I'd have been able to save pocket money for a ghetto blaster like this in the 80s. Great restoration, looks brand new, you would only need to pull it of the original packaging to fool me!

I like Hitachi. I just aquired a new in box Sony MHC 3600 mini system. The duel tape decks need new belts and pinch rollers. I found the cd player had a delayed power up. It had a leaky cap. I had to replace it. But the cd player is still taking a minute to power up. I think it was stored in a hot climate. Rubber speaker surrounds are still good though. Another great job Teddy

Oooh! So this is THE Hitachi you mentioned on the other video. I can see why you decided not to mod it. It’s a total peach, what a beauty! I only question that “18w” on the front. That’s quite a bold statement. Other than that, very neat equipment. Nice tweeters, too.

your restorations and your videos are all very very beautiful and interesting, I love to watch even the longest ones in full! if I can afford it, you should make an even more accurate check of the recorder, not only in play mode, but also in rec! in this boombox, in fact in play mode the left channel is very very weak, it seems that only the right channel works, also observing carefully in the meter and this has also happened in other videos

Thanks Teddy for putting this up! You inspired me soon after to take apart my old TRK 3D2 and finally take the plunge on these machines. Two questions if I may: what is the spray you use at 5:40? iso alco? The other thing I'm not sure about is whether the plastic gears should be greased at all. It's hard to tell after 32 years whether the factory did 'em or not? All I know is the mechanism is sounding a little noisy these days. Anyway, great job.
@teddyhashee
@teddyhashee 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for the comment. I used rubber rejuvenator to clean and restore the rubber parts. amzn.to/2KrnJoL Some gears need grease, some do not. When you clean these parts, you see that original grease is there or not. Mostly they used black color grease and easy to locate them. If you see the residue of grease, you want to replace it with new grease, if you do not see them, you do not have to.

Great video. I "restored" one of these recently as an amateur, but I think one of the belts I got in the kit, wasn't correct as it doesn't take-up when the reel gets heavy with tape. Also, I broke the solenoid for the music search system the auto stop doesn't seem to work and when I record the sound is very faint, not sure if I caused these. None of these are deal breakers apart from the weak belt. I'm nervous at taking it apart again.
@teddyhashee
@teddyhashee 5 жыл бұрын
There are many factors that take-up reel does not work well. If the mechanism include the drive tire ( not drive belt), then the tire may worn out and it may be causing the slipping. Anyway, I always do the re-open the body and re-do the work as many times as I need to. If I need to re-do the process, I will do until I solve the problem. So you do what you have to do in order to bring your precious boombox back to live!
@adrianfox9431
@adrianfox9431 5 жыл бұрын
@@teddyhashee Thanks for the encouragement, I'll have another go with a finger on the take-up spindle and see what is slipping. Did you have to un-solder anything as part of your strip-down? I struggled with the tape mechanism as it seemed to have wires soldered to the main board that I was reluctant to de-solder so I couldn't dismantle it to the extent that you did. Any pro tips on fixing Auto-stop or recording level? btw, I now have a Sharp GF-9191 on its way that I'm going to attempt to restore as well. Once again thanks for the video, will give me more confidence now with my unit.
@teddyhashee
@teddyhashee 5 жыл бұрын
It is depends on the wiring, if it is too short wire to clean the cassette deck, I de-solder the wire, or just cut them in half and later I connect them by soldering. There is no easy way to fix the auto-stop or such a common problem. You need to observe the cassette deck each parts, and need to locate which one is causing the problem. Remember, restoration needs your patience and great amount of time, need to observe from top to bottom. You can do it.

@@teddyhashee thanks again, I now got the cassette working okay but this unit seems determined not to let me win. When I put it together for the final time I noticed that the radio (now?) doesn't receive stereo FM (the light doesn't come on and the sound is indeed monorual) :(

I am now working on an 8190W (same as yours) which has the dual voltage input, no LW but two SW. I know there was also an 8190H. I think E was for Europe, H for the US and I guess W was for Worldwide?? Do you know? Thanks Neil

Hi, Neil. Congratulations on your success restoration. Here is a info about 8190. "The TRK-8190E model, shown below, was sold in Europe, and is set for 220 or 240 volts. The TRK-8190H model was sold in North America and is rated for 120 volts. The E model has a black tuner dial, while the H model has a brushed aluminum dial. And there's another version called the TRK-8290 Perdisco, which has all the same features plus the ability to play a wireless FM microphone." Hi Ted, firstly thank you for making the video (whether it be from my request or coincidence). I'll probably watch this video half a dozen times over while restoring mine. I have a couple questions as well... the first, what do you use to polish the clear plastic (tuner windows, cassette door windows)? Also, mine has some sort of electrical issue it seems. When I turn on the radio, the sound quickly fades to nothing. While doing this, the led meters either flash randomly and flicker, or they simply shut off.... What could these things be due to? Also, sometimes when i turn it to radio, i can her popping in the speakers.... Any idea what that could mean? Thank you in advance for any info/guidance
@teddyhashee
@teddyhashee 6 жыл бұрын
I used plastic cleaner from Japan www.soft99.co.jp/english/products/carcare/body_cleaner/plastic_cleaner.html?pid=09066 However, you can use any other plastic polish products you can get from Amazon, eBay amzn.to/2FUqZaY Here is my video that I tried remove scratches from plastic lens on the clock. It may help you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5XIiYmOoZ6ci5Y If it is deep scratch, then you need to sand them down to remove it. Some of my boombox video, I used water sanding to remove most scratches from lens, but it will take a quite time. If the only radio has problem, but cassette deck plays well, then it is not from the power supply neither tuner/amp themselves. Rather I guess from selector switch connection. Did you clean the selector switch with contact cleaner?
@hunterwells3410
@hunterwells3410 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ted, and not yet I haven't, I'll have to get some contact cleaner soon.... And also, it does the flickering and popping/fading/tuner lights dimming while switched to tape too.... When i got it, the deck worked but the belt snapped as I was playing the tape.... (also, can you remember the belt sizes by any chance?)
@teddyhashee
@teddyhashee 6 жыл бұрын
I did not record belt size, sorry. You can test different size of belt to find out best fit one as I always do. After that, you need to adjust motor speed that's also shown in the video.

LOL, mine acts kinda like yours. Except it takes 30 minutes or more for the radio to fade in power. When it happens, I can see that the LED meter output has dropped to maybe half. If I jiggle the function switch, it goes back to normal power/volume. I tried spraying the function switch bar inside, but that didn't solve the issue. Strange.

@teddyhashee
@teddyhashee 5 жыл бұрын
@catleaderk
@catleaderk 5 жыл бұрын
@@teddyhashee

@teddyhashee
@teddyhashee 5 жыл бұрын
