Every time I listen to Japanese city pop I get the feeling that I have lived there in the 80s. It is a strange, yet familiar feeling, I cannot really explain it.

Imagine yourself as a 24 year old just promoted office worker who live in Shinjuku in 1988. You are with your boyfriend/girlfriend in the bay of Tokyo and Ginza neon lights are glowing in the night. There's a newspaper in the road and on the front page it says how the price of housing has decreased by 10%. You don't need to think about your future because your present is already perfect. You are living in a bubble that seems eternal... Now you are in the right mood to really enjoy city pop.

This whole playlist reminds me of a very beautiful girl I met back in summer of 1987 in Odaiba. It was a very humid weekend that we mostly spent drinking iced coffee and sitting on a bench looking at the water making gentle waves. It was love at first sight and we promised we’d marry each other despite neither of us knowing more than 5 words of each other’s language. And on the day I was due to fly back home I called her to ask when we’d see each other again. She never picked up and I never heard from her again. How I miss her to this day. Also, I was born in 1994 and I’ve never been to Japan.
