I wanted to add a product report for those who are considering metal gears. I just installed a set, I was able to get them quickly and conveniently through Amazon. They work fine and come as an assembly so you don’t have to press the gear on the shaft. I know there is debate over point of failure and Toyota put plastic gears for a reason arguments, I don’t have an opinion on that. I needed the parts quickly and they worked. Thanks for a great instructional video. As a side note my 10 year old replaced them, I just had to show him what to take apart.

Good vid. I might add the root cause of the stripped gear is the missing end cap. They will work themselves loose. And allow the gear alignment to get off. And the gears will strip. To prevent this from ever happening again. Drill a small hole thru the housing into the end cap. And run a small self tapping screw into it. That end cap will never come loose again unless you want it to. Also using some Teflon tape will also help hold the end cap in place. This is on the gaviti website not my idea. Also it takes one set per seat. The sets are $20 each last time I bought em. I have never heated the gears just the shaft. I may try heating the gears next time. Seems easier than torching the shaft. But was wondering if heating the gears may compromise them. I doubt it but that would be my only concern.
@OTRAMM6 жыл бұрын
Good point. I totally forgot to mention using a screw to pin the end caps in. Heating the gears up in hot water doesn't seem to get them hot enough to affect them. The heated gears seem to install easier than heating the shaft since they're more pliable. I had broken a few gears using the heated shaft method. I haven't broken any since I started heating the gear instead.

Just finished the gear replacement which would have been impossible for me without your helpful video. @ 9:44 you put in the four 5mm allen bolts. I was almost done when I realized I had one left over. Hmmm....?? Turns out there are 5 of them. Probably typical Toyota overkill!

Does the 80 series 1994 with manual seats have the electrical plugs already if you want to change the manual seats for an automatic seat?

I'm not sure, I've never looked. Toyota is pretty good at wiring for all of the options though so they're likely there.

Did the gear change but seat mounting holes doesn’t align with the truck anymore therefore I can’t put all 4 bolts any idea on what I did wrong?
@OTRAMM4 ай бұрын
Sounds like one of the adjusters got spun so they don't line up side to side anymore. It's easiest to reassemble with the adjusters all the way at one end or the other to insure they line back up.

@@OTRAMM thanks for your reply. I found the issue I took off both seats, took apart the 2 rods on each seat and mix matched them when I put it back. The drivers seat is a bit longer than the passenger seat rod so this caused issues.

Ha... so I did the gear change. Plenty other things wrong.... I think it needs a new motor ... one motor just doesn't spin when... yes both gears were installed... the part that spins the near middle or interior 'screw' worked for about 4 seconds... Thanks for the video. Have you tried the metal gears yet? Also who makes the driver / gun you are using to take those bolts loose with? That is a nice tool!
@OTRAMM5 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried the metal gears yet. My 80 needs gears so it may be the Guinea pig. The impact is a Matco. Crash has the Milwaukee version and it's more powerful and cheaper. Once the Matco dies I'll be getting a Milwaukee.

Usually if the gears are stripped the motors spins but the seat doesn't move. I could see it causing slop in forward and backward movement though.

Hi OTRAMM, One quick question on the seat gear that you install. Do you know why after installing the new gear on and installing the seat back in. the new gear crack once i test it out. is it because the track is off alignment.
@OTRAMM5 жыл бұрын
I've had that happen a few times. My guess is that the gears weren't quite warm enough and got stressed on install. Tracks out of alignment could do it as well though.

Per Gamiviti himself: "There is a small chamfer on one side of the gear, and I always start the press on that side.. any chance you tried it the other way? Only other way I'd think of is it went on crooked.. I have done quite a few of these and just start slow and straight, making sure I start on the chamfered side, and they don't split. "
@charleslenfest12044 жыл бұрын
what type of grease do you apply to the gears when installing?
@OTRAMM4 жыл бұрын
The best would probably be the Toyota electric motor grease. Barring that like a plastic safe grease like caliper pin grease.
@Sertao20135 жыл бұрын
Otramm I'm a dental lab tech . I can invest ,burn out the plastic gear and can cast it into stainless steel . Do you see any reason why you don't want the gear to be metal ? As far as I know the only reason the gears strip out is because the plug works it way out and causes the bar with the gear turn off center and binds the gears and strips the gears out .It only take one adjustment of the seat with the plug out to strip the plastic gears . If the plug would stay in place the gears would never strip . I drilled a small hole into the housing through the cap near the end out the other side and put a pin through it to hold the cap in place so it would not work its way out . What is the reason the gears are plastic and there is no way to lock the cap that comes out in place ?
@OTRAMM5 жыл бұрын
Not sure why the gears were plastic other than cost or maybe noise. There's an aftermarket version that does them in bronze but I haven't tried them.

I think it was probably originally a safety fuse. Like the gears would strip before you crushed things. As the slides wear and the threaded rods get gummed up the added resistance pops them easier. At least that's my theory.
