In the early 1080s, I was an Electronics Technician Apprentice at Lockheed's Skunk Works, helping build the F-117A Nighthawk stealth fighter. I worked on serial numbers 002, 003, and 005. They've got 003 outside the Reagan Presidential Library, up on a pylon -- looks like it's in-flight. I took my kids up to see it earlier this year. It was just like working in Star Wars. Good times :0}

I will say, Lockheed Martin skunk works is among the top five most incredible stories in American history.... Sadly, over the last 30+/- yrs, Lockheed & others decided to shift away from *mostly self-funded, in house research development testing & evaluation of world changing technology developed by in-house teams of world class engineers, designers, machinists & creative minds & who literally wrote the book on rapid & cost-effective manufacturing, integration & production. Now it seems like the primary objective is acquiring new capital to fund further corporate mergers & acquisitions to eliminate any competition.... Ultimately the only goal is to make sure the shareholders see profit. Also, millions are used to lobby Congress for MASSIVE Over-bloated & perpetually funded GUARANTEED prime government contracts.... **Now cutting as many research development costs as possible is the focus of the board of directors....

Well, with today's sensor packages and specific mission configurable loadouts, it is far more of an aircraft than the SR-71 could've ever dreamed of being considering the limitations imposed upon it in order to reach the necessary speed to make it viable.

Skunk works was amazing back in the 40's. Its a real shane that OSHA pinged them for so many violations that they had to change how they worked, and then starting with the F-117 and on the government kept on their back, which kinda killed the original skunkworks idea and inatead made it a lot worse.

Lockheed engineers and producers a lot more than just military hardware, including civilian space travel related stuff, commercial communications sattelites, the Orion capsule for NASA, healthcare products, and even some of the chips used in a few of the Atari game systems. It's a very large company. Though I'm pretty sure the military market is the bulk of there contracts for sure.
