Hafnaoui proved that his gold in 400m free at Tokyo Olympic was not a fluke. Here at Fukuoka 2023 WC, he performed very well again. In 400m free, he only lost by 0.02 sec to Sam Short, after both swam under 3 min 43 secs. And as shown in this video of 800m free, he won with good time record too. Next year at Paris, I think we will see him vs Sam Short again, both in 400 and 800m free.

But he came literary from nowhere. Before Tokyo , he was unknown with nil results. He was not even close to what he achieved. No achievements what so ever at youth level, youth Olympus or major champions, literary nothing ! All of a sudden, bang, world champion. Disappears for a year and misses the last world champion., comes in the next world champion, bang bang ! It does not happen like that in swimming! There are hardly any surprises in swimming unlike other sports. In addition, the pace of improvement in swimming is usually gradual not all of the sudden. If you have an explanation for that, please do cause I can’t understand it!

This really should be the WR. The only faster times came from 2009 world championships in supersuits. This is significantly faster than anyone who was not in a supersuit has ever gone. He beat sun yang, Hackett and Thorpe, just name a few.

@@gianpolignano2632 Zhang Lin's performance, despite the suit, displayed impressive swim at thw WC 2009, esp his fantastic huge kick in the last 25m which made difference between him and Ossama Mellouli who finished at 2nd place. Still, even Mellouli's time record then is faster than current swimmers.
