the chemistry on this is phenomenal. No wonder the studio recording to capture this couldn't make it justice. Simone Phillips is a monster on the drums.

Another GREAT CHOICE! You guys are listening to much of what me and my friends listened to in high-school, circa late 70s. A wonderful time it was. Glad you are getting a chance to soak up some of these amazing songs. (There is SO much more too….) Keep up the great work. [PS - You need to listen to some Tangerine Dream… if you want to, ping me, I’ll suggest something awesome for you.]

Excellent selection to react to. I bought this just after it came out. I was way into King Crimson in the mid 70's, which lead me to the Fripp and Eno projects, which lead me to Roxy Music, which lead me to Phil Manzenera and his tribe of musicians, which lead me to 801. Everything on here is so well done and really way ahead of most stuff going on at that time. But one standout is Eno's song Baby's on Fire. Might want to check that out next time.

Thanks for the reaction Sight After Dark! 801 Live has been a desert island disc choice for me since 1976. TNK sounds great between the Lagrima and East of Asteroid tracks on the album. Other favorite instrumental tracks are Sombre Reptiles and Diamondhead. They really were an early supergroup with Simon Philips' creds being The Who, Judas Priest, Jeff Beck, Toto, etc. Francis Monkman--Curved Air, Renaissance, and Sky; Bill MacCormick in Matching Mole and Gong; and Eno in well, everything. Phil Manzanera's other solo efforts K-Scope and Impossible Guitars are also worth checking out.

@@SightAfterDark Thank you for everything. Oh, also. 801 is a cipher for ENO's name: Eight-Nought-One. He did the same kind of stuff with anagrams and word rearrangements in other places. His song on his Before and After Science album was King's Lead Hat which is a scramble of Talking Heads

One of the best live albums ever recorded. Such a perfect combination of musicians who were all firing on all cylinders. It’s a shame that the studio album they followed this up with wasn’t anywhere near as good. I think that was largely due to the fact that Brian Eno didn’t have anywhere near as big a presence on it. His lead vocals and the fact that they performed several of his best solo songs on the live album was a big part of what made it great, but on the studio album, he didn’t write or sing anything.

I got this album around 1978. First year university, 1979, everyone in our dorm knew it whether they liked it or not. On of my favorite albums and favorite track. A must play loud. Awesome Simon Phillips. And Eno's otherly world vocals.

This is mid-70s. There's a studio record -- very different from the live one, but also great -- credited to "Phil Manzanera/801". That's called "Listen Now". Major reason for the difference is the number of collaborators and the absence of Brian Eno, who in large part defines the sound of 801 Live.
@michaelkeefe84943 жыл бұрын
I think that 2nd lineup did another live album too - 801 Manchester? It gets a little confusing.
@wagstaff61353 жыл бұрын
@@michaelkeefe8494 Not sure I understand what you're calling "2nd lineup". There were three live concerts, I think all of them released eventually; but not sure. Maybe you're talking the 1977 lineup (which isn't the same as the studio record either!) which had two live albums I haven't heard -- not released in the USA as far as I know. I read in reviews that sound quality was bad... And I just saw there was an "801 Latino" but... Manzanera is using the name again for a very different project, once again, there!

They put out a live album (the one that the cover of “Tomorrow Never Knows” is on) which was basically a recording of one of very few shows by a very short-lived musical project that seemed to mainly be spearheaded by Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno- they were the only members of Roxy Music involved. The rest of the band was made up of people that Phil and Eno had worked with on their solo albums. They also made a studio album (which was credited to “Phil Manzanera/801”) a year later, but unfortunately, it greatly pales in comparison to the live album. It had some of the same musicians on it (including the amazing Bill MacCormick on bass) but it’s a huge step down in quality. Whereas the live album is dynamic and powerful and always going exciting new places, the studio albums is just… well… ultimately kinda boring. It’s too subdued and mellow for its own good, and although he’s a great saxophonist, Mel Collins’ playing just sounds out of place. I feel like it would’ve worked a lot better if they’d had had Andy MacKay play sax or just had no sax at all. The live album is incredible, though.

A somewhat confounding but interesting listen back in "the day" (!😂!). I like Manzanera's playing, and Simon Phillip's drumming, not sure how much Eno actually contributed though some of the trippier synth-like sounds are reminiscent of his "treatments" of the OTHER members' instruments in Roxy Music. I don't actually recall listening to their rendition of his 'Baby's On Fire' on this, gave it somewhat short-shrift after this tune, which I applauded, inside where it counts, A for effort, but probably had another turntable pick lined up, for whatever the routine-ish gathering was.
