I, a non-chemist/scientist, was trying to interpret this study the other week and that bar graph was so confusing! I'm proud I ended up interpreting it right though. I also thought the skin tone difference in that picture was interesting, and it made me wonder how "representative" pictures in studies are chosen.
@ChemistConfessions Жыл бұрын
haha as people who read these studies regularly, it still took a good 20 min of squinting and jotting down notes to get through the graphs. yeahhh this is why we try to only talk about papers we have read in full. often times, the conclusions don't necessarily match the pictures

i have tried retinols, tret and adapalene. i cannot tolerate retinol even though i have tried a few cause it makes my skin redm same with tret even using the sandwich method. Have tried the.1 adapalene and feels it doesn't really work on my acne now i'm using .3 adapalene and it works well.

I use azelaic acid 10% with tret.0.25.Wonderful combo.Azelaic acid has strong anti inflammatory and calming effect and it negates irritating effects of tret+gentle exfoliation from azelaic acid.Great combo!

@jimbojimbo6873 You put azelaic acid then moisturizer and tret on top. In order to buy azelaic acid 10% you don't need prescribtion.

Very unlikely to be exfoliating effects from 10% azelaic acid... and even the 15% Finacea gel (strongest available) I got some Finacea over the counter partially to help with bacteria-related acne, and it did NOTHIN' in that regard. Benzoyl peroxide has been really awesome though, far better for bacteria it seems. I'm using Finacea for other stuff though.

Been conflicted whether to switch to tret, been on adapalene for about 3 years and very happy with it for acne management! But getting towards 40, tret is looking more exciting😋

Interesting stuff! 18:36 - Also 0.3% Adapalene isn't even AVAILABLE in I'm sure many countries. Here in Australia there's only 0.1% Adapalene (Differin), UNLESS you go with Epiduo Forte which is 0.3% adapalene but you also gotta have the 2.5% benzoyl peroxide mixed in with it For tretinoin, Australia used to have 0.025% and 0.05% tretinoin (probably not 0.1%), but then one of the 2 companies stopped making tretinoin, and maybe the other company discontinued a strength option, but either way now there's only one company for Australia, and they only do 0.05% tretinoin (cream version. It's cosmetically elegant though thankfully). It's wild. Other than one, there's like, ordering from India and whatnot That was a cool animal fact! (platypus fur-lickin'). I didn't know about that lol

Nice podcast, guys! Thank you for the info. More breaking down the studies and normalizing discussions of "we know this, but we don't know all of what this means" is so needed. Voices of reality among the random viral bursts of crap products & "cool facts" (that usually aren't true). Good studies and biochemistry is so cool :)

Thanks for sharing this, I’ve been using OTC adapalene for 2+ years for my acne prone skin, and I’d like to see more anti aging benefits, would it be a good idea to use adapalene and retinol on alternate nights?
@ChemistConfessions Жыл бұрын
Great question! If skin is tolerating adapalene with no issues, it's ok to try. We'd recommend just adding in one night a week of retinol to see how skin handles it. Would you also consider other anti-aging actives outside of the retinoid realm (vitamin C, peptides, etc.)?
@salichingching Жыл бұрын
@@ChemistConfessions thanks for the advice! Can’t wait to try it out that way!! Yup, I’ve been using vitamin C and niacinamide in my routine, perhaps I should also add peptide too🥰

Can i alternate between adapalene and tretinoin and are there any benefits to doing so? (For example, tret 3 times a week and adapalene 4)
@ChemistConfessions7 ай бұрын
We don't see a benefit since both are achieving the same goals of triggering your retinoic acid receptors in skin. What strengths of adapalene and tretinoin are you using?
@henry78k6 ай бұрын
@@ChemistConfessions i’m currently using also tretinoin at .04% and adapalene at .1? Is this OK? I’m mainly using these for acne.
@yakata794 ай бұрын
Hello, even if adapalene at the 0.1% OTC level hasn’t been studied enough to determine if it has anti aging benefit, can it be said that it’s still a good product to fight hyperpigmentation and acne scarring? Also, is it a sebum regulator like niacinamide? It was suggested in the video to go a different route than adapalene to try to get those anti aging benefits. But did Gloria say retinol or retinal? Or would both be a better route than adapalene, as far as studies have shown?
@ChemistConfessions3 ай бұрын
it's more that we don't know what degree of improvement 0.1% adapalene can provide for concerns like hyperpigmentation, while we have a better understanding of retinol

Which one is best for milia? I'm 24+ years old
@ChemistConfessionsАй бұрын
Would recommend a different approach if you haven't tried it yet - exfoliator or get an esthetician to lance it. Sometimes too much active like peptides can contribute to milia

I used adapalene and it is milder on my very sensitive eczema prone skin compare to tretinion 0.05% / 0.25% I don't have irration from adapalene unlike tretinion. I used tretinion on and off for years but it is still very irritating for me so I still cannot use it every day.

There is no common sense in theory that 0,1% adapalene wont work similar as other retinoids...These receptor binding is not as much specific as you think... They are all quite much the same...just more or less strong
@ChemistConfessions25 күн бұрын
You might have misunderstood our babbling (very common XD) but it's not to say that adapalene wouldn't have some activity. In fact, there is a clinical looking at 0.3% adapalene for anti-aging benefits. But, we don't have as good of an understanding as tretinoin when it comes to the 0.1% concentration (what is the extent of the benefits, length of time, etc). It's important to have more testing data because adapalene is meant to target only specific retinoid receptors, so how does that translate to skin benefits? As with most skincare ingredients, we need to know more.
