I wouldn't pay attention to other peoples opinions about the work you are doing. It's your boat and if you like it and that's what you want that's all that matters. One thing I can see if you plan on sailing with your son on board you will need a boat with a bigger berth for him sooner then you might realize. He's going to quickly out grow that space. Keep on with the great job and you will be sailing the world sooner then you realize. God bless and keep you all safe .

I think they said his bed space is over 6 ft. But you're right about how fast they grow - seems like they were little just a while ago, and now we have grandchildren. The days are long, but the years are short.

I like your "new" windless. If it was me, I might consider welding 2 brackets to the windless bottom and use the existing deck bolts to bolt it down, rather that cutting the old bolts off and drilling and tapping new holes.

Good morning Melody crew , I don’t envy you doing the work in the uk you guys are doing so well! Thanks for the mention again , we really do appreciate it , we have actually replaced the entire toe rail TWICE , cutting it off the full-length of the boat in 2003 in Plymouth uk and using what was supposed to be marine grade steel , it looked lovely when it was finished but rust streaks started coming back with in a couple of years and out of frustration We cut the whole lot off again in southern Spain in 2018 in 45 degree heat . Part of the problem with the work done the first time was the amount of rain that we had when we were doing it meant by the time it was finished moisture was already trapped under the teak. With more time and better weather plus using stainless steel we replaced it in the sun shine ….. so much easier and no rust streaks five years later… no more acid washing the decks each week …..wahooooo Keep up the good work and for a break and an insight into life aboard in the sunshine …INVITE ….you should definitely get on a plane and come visit us during the summer, we will show you why you are making all the effort and the rewards that will come your way once you have finished repairing the boat, Nat . Ian . Nelson

Love what you are doing and keep up the good work, i have done berth cushions for alot of small boats and on one occasion i did a massive 3 deck touring type sport boat, surgestion..... your seating...... put a bull nose (rounded hump) on the outer edge of your seating under your knee's so you will be less likely to slide off in rough conditions, berth cushions (bed foams) that follow the shape of the hull are easy to make, and the angles are easy to cut with an electric carving knife. if you need any advise give me a shout. pete uk.

Definitely taking shape keep up the good work and stainless wire with argon is the best way. you have done them now but for future reference and especially bigger holes when plug welding you can put a piece of scrap brass thicker the better on the back of the hole makes it nice and flat on the other side and won't stick to the weld. that base looks like it was made for that windlass

Andy, If you flatten a short section of copper pipe and get Melissa to hold it inside against the hole, you will get a fuller weld through the deck. The weld won’t stick to the copper.

Dear Sailing Melody family (this time even with the cute dog). 👍👌👏 Very "weld" done again and as always (video and work). Uhm... I wonder if Captain Jack's cabin is like this because usually parents don't want their kids to grow up (at least I didn't)? Just kidding of course. ;-) 😁 2) Please kindly allow me a suggestion: There is an old and easy trick to deal with welding holes tight: Simply put a plate or a block of copper, brass or bronze underneath the holes. The underside of the welds will be smooth and usually no sparks will come through. To be on the safe side, you can hold/clamp the plate/block with a wet piece of fabric. With this method it is even possible to weld holes tight on your own. Additional advantages are: a) It's useful to always have a block or thick plate of copper, brass or bronze, so that it can also be used as an underlay/base while welding things together (for instance angle iron). No steel weld will stick to the mentioned materials. b) Because of this fact it's easier to weld respectively repair weld thin metal. As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all of you. Post Scriptum: I checked out SV Blown away, their solution is a good thing to have. Nevertheless: Stainless steel is expensive. Maybe you do similar in some years?

I use a collection of copper water pipes (flattened) and a couple of copper blocks and bars with some thick steel washers epoxied/bolted to them (so I can use a welding magnet with them) for situations like you are tackling with the stanchion post bolt holes. If you weld a hole and like to fill weld said hole it is very handy to back the hole up with something that does not burn or stick to the welding material, like copper. It will get hot and will damage over time due to scorching but steel welding does not adhere to copper. I use it (among other things) to weld up cracks, holes and such in anything from sheet metal fenders on a motorcycle to 6-8mm plate which may have quite a large gap to bridge. You can weld actually on the copper, the weld pool will flow over it very nicely but again no sticking to it...

I agree with Bernd M, about making an adaptor plate and reusing the existing screws to mount the Anchor winch. An adaptor plate can be made then (probably) for even a replacement of your newest winch should that be needed in the future. I would use a 10mm plate or thicker to account for over-torque forces should the anchor become stuck. Melody is looking good.
@SailingMelody2 жыл бұрын
I have thought this through and I’ll take some measurements but I’m pretty sure it won’t work because the existing bolts are in the wrong placed hard to explain by text but I’ll show my thoughts on camera soon

Anchor chain is a funny thing, it will tangle at the most inconvenient moment, and I hope you consider having the hawse pipe directly below the gypsy to save a potential problem with the lay of the chain as the anchor is hauled in. Just my tuppence worth... Cheers..! Grant.
@SailingMelody2 жыл бұрын
Yes I completely agree and you’re right the windlass must come aft by 6pm for the chain to fall directly from the ghost to the hawse pipe. I like to have a rubber bung which I can attach to the end of the chai so when on passage I can remove the anchor and stow it and the weight of the chain pulls the rubber bung into the hawse pipe (it has a loop of cord to pull it back out again of course)

You may want to consider Butyl Tape under any fittings on deck. Beauty is it will squeeze out so the fitting is in hard contact with the deck and secure but any voids remain filled. Cut back anything that gets extruded and re-use it a bit like bluetack.

The imperfections in the metal you spoke of when welding the Stanchion holes is corrosion you’re putting in the weld. Should of drilled the holes a little larger to remove the corrosion in the holes and a light/more grinding on top and bottom till clean. The new welds will brake sooner, but when only time will tell when. Hopefully they will last long enough for your needs.
@SailingMelody2 жыл бұрын
Those plug welds aren’t in any way structural to be honest. The strength is in the weld all the way around the stantion post foot
@notwocdivad2 жыл бұрын
Wonderful progress again! May I make a suggestion re the anchor winch, Would it be possible, instead of removing the old bolts and drilling and tapping new ones could you make an adaptor plate which will bolt to the old bolts and also be made to fit the new motor? Then if you ever change the motor the plate could be re adapted or renewed rather than the deck again? Also wondered what's your opinion about having grab rails on the cabin roof for rough weather moving about the boat? Roll on next week's episode!! OH I see you have an old sea dog with you this week?
@SailingMelody2 жыл бұрын
Someone else asked that and I thought it was a good idea but further thinking leads me to the conclusion that the exisiting bolt studs actuslly are too narrow for me to be able to position the winch correctly. It might work but I don’t think so. I’ll try it with some thick plywood as a concept. Good idea though
