There's my bass mentor, Abe Laboriel! It was an honor and privilege to have in-person, 1-on-1 lessons with him for a semester, while I was a music student in Los Angeles.

You can see how crucial Abe's role is at 31:57, when the bass drops out for several minutes , due to tech difficulties! band had to go to a drum solo

So weird to see Lee playing a Strat. 🎸 And as usual, Lee has an exceptional group of musicians to back him up. And what a great audience. I think these Japanese audiences are very appreciative of Jazz and Mr. Ritenour and friends are certainly masters of their craft. As a musician myself I too appreciate just how incredibly "tight" this group is. Much love to the producers and crew who put this performance on video for future generations to see.

Just noticed Lee bears a bit of a resemblance to Pat Metheny. The schnoz and the grin full of teeth.Their music and playing styles and improvising are quite distinct though. Interesting to see what folks were playing in the mid 1980s, look like Lee was running a stereo rig w/ two 1x12'' Seymour Duncan amps, with what looks like a 3rd power amp underneath the Fx rack in between them, plus what looks like and American Standard Fender Strat. Don grunion w/ the ubiquitous Yamaha CP70 electric piano which seems that is MIDI-ying some synthesizers (perhaps the uber ubiquitous Yamaha DX7?). Thanks for sharing this top shelf Cross Over Jazz music.

they are using a backing track as i hear keyboard melodies that nobody visible is playing. also in the 1984 "Rit Special" there are some very obvious backing vocals that nobody visible is singing. but how did they do it in 1986? i googled it and there were some multitrack players like Tascam 38, 8 track tape recorder, or they could have used some midi solution. which one was it? was it really feasible bringing a tape-based backing track solution on tour? sounds like a lot of hassle plus the tapes would definitely degrade with repeated playback - wouldn't they? also what about the costs? does anyone know? i was alive then, but not a touring musician (i was 5 :)
