#82: Placido just ranted about me for an hour

I didn’t want to make this video, but I really had no choice, when Placido made an hour long rant video that was full of strange accusations.
If he responds back with another video, I won’t make another response, because that’s not going to help anything.
In short, his ego was badly bruised, because I made video and showed a still shot of him for only 3s. I showed it, because it’s not that what he was showing will never work, but it can put you in more danger, which I explained here in my video.
I am not out to get anyone and not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings, so if posting a photo for 3s results in an hour long rant, then I can try to be more delicate about how I teach. I greatly underestimated Placido. I thought he would probably come back a bit, but this was a bit over the top. Clearly he is hurt by it, so I will leave him alone. I come from a wrestling background where we rip on people constantly and people don’t lose it. Any of my followers who have communicated with me online in DMs, etc, get that. They leave sarcastic things on my channel all the time.
I will try not to hurt people’s feelings moving forward.

Please address the bit about Kyle Ceminara. Placido claims in the vid that it was Kyle Ceminara who would come teach Wrestling in the Blue Basement, and taught John and students when in a Single-Leg to respond to the Whizzer with the Side Body-Lock. A quick search shows Kyle Ceminara has a 'Single-Leg Seat-Belt' series on BJJFanatics.

Yeah in my opinion, and the opinion of many high level coaches, it’s bringing him back into the match. If you have a single, then you have control over a lot of his power, since the hips and legs are very powerful. But when you let go of the leg to the side bodylock, you have to sit back with it in the chair to a supplex, just like I described here in my video. On my instructional I show that as well. I also showed it briefly on video 25. I can supplex Jordan Preisinger easier on the instructional than Dom on my channel because of the difference in size. You can do it, but when you do, you give the guy inside hip position and he has a lot of power from there. He now has both legs on the mat and like I said in this video, pushing loads yourself onto his hips and gives him an uchi mata from hell. It’s why I made the ADCC video showing that. Live examples of what I have been saying since my first video on KZbin. Some people can play that game but if you watch them in wrestling matches they get a lot of stalemates and lose the takedown. Staying on the legs is the best way to finish so that’s your goal. If your legs are powerful and I wrap them up, you are now less powerful to me. I know some of the U of M coaches and have talked to them about it. They both said the same thing-never abandon the legs for the body. Kyle is a big guy and a beast. If it works for him that’s cool, but you should respect the fact that there is risk in coming up to the waist. Staying low is where the whizzer is weak. Coming up to the waist is where the whizzer is strong. It’s the whole point of the whizzer. And once you go upper body, you are in the greatest risk of getting taken down off your own offense. The data support this. I talked about the single finish in #2 and 39. I then talked about offensive and defensive scoring risks in 74. Lastly, if you want your shoulders to last, you will avoid the dogfight. My shoulders are wrecked from being in there. Stay on the leg and the shoulder takes less of a hit

Yes! In judo the overhook is as powerful as the underhook. The power of the sleeves and control of posture with the Gi changes everything! I ko so gari a lot in the Gi, but that’s super rare for me to make work without a Gi. Without a gi, I will supplex or mat return.

Thanks for the insight. I aim to shoot to my lock. Once my hands are locked I had a good chance to run the corner or hit the cut back. But if I’m not able to lock my hands I’ll post my hand on the mat for support. Then I have a few options such as split the middle, peek out. I would never unlock my hands and post on the mat. Like you said with transitioning from a single leg to a bodylock, you’re giving up a good position for an inferior one. However if I don’t get my hands locked, I need to post otherwise I’m going to face plant. What would you recommend I do in this situation?
@josephbreza-grappling9459

Yes, the risk is posting your hand gives him an underhook and stops your progress. I used to do it in highschool but stopped doing it in college, because I invariably lost the move. So if I lost the move, I would short drag

I get it, but he said it several times as if it’s fact and then kinda waved it off. In terms of subscribers, I am not a smaller channel. I believe his instagram is pretty big though. Who cares-just addressing your point. I only said what I said because I am a psychologist and neuroscientist, but he is going around calling me bipolar. I quit working in clinical long ago, because I wanted to learn how things work rather than directly with patients. So I poked a little fun at his accusations/diagnoses, etc-he walked into that. Bipolar isn’t complimenting someone on their takedowns 2 years after poking a little fun at someone for showing very similar technique after just coming over to my channel. He is more offended that I didn’t plug who he was and his affiliation as a coach than the fact that I used a still shot of him to explain what not to do. Teaching people how to wrestle when you have no wrestling background is like lying on a resume. As a professor, I definitely find it very annoying when people teach outside their area of expertise. He has expertise in Jiu Jitsu. He should teach that. Notice how I don’t teach Jiu Jitsu? It’s because teaching it implies I am an expert and because I am not I don’t teach it. If I were to teach BJJ, people would see what I am doing wrong and comment on it. As a wrestler of 33 years and having the best coaches there are, I see people teaching bad technique and I don’t like it because it teaches people bad habits. Bad habits are harder to break. That’s it man. As I said on the video, I won’t use anyone who doesn’t know what they are doing as examples of what not to do. That was a mistake and I owned up to it

I have to respectfully disagree. Although I don't think Placido showed the technique very well, there is nothing particularly advanced about splitting the middle (what Placido calls backdoor finish). I was taught it in high school and have seen it used at all levels against well-matched opponents. It's not a move that only elite wrestlers are able to do or only works against scrubs.
@a0kca1p
@a0kca1p 3 ай бұрын
That said, I agree with you that what Placido shows will get his students in trouble against better opponents. Not because splitting the middle (which generally requires separating your hands and posting on the mat) isn't legit, but because his demonstration wasn't great and missed some key teaching points. This is a case of "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing." It's not like Placido came up with splitting the middle on his own. He obviously learned it from his wrestling instructors and or from watching videos. As you know, Danaher and his crew watch a ton of videos and try to repurpose what they see into what they teach. But just because you have "learned" something, even from a highly reputable source, does not mean you are ready to teach it well to other people.
@josephbreza-grappling9459
@josephbreza-grappling9459 3 ай бұрын
This is my main point. I did it when I wrestled too, but it also could give the guy the underhook on the hand posted on the mat, so then I could get cowcatcher’ed or at a minimum the forward progression stops because of the underhook. I am used to teaching kids. I tell them “don’t do this” because it’s not worth the risk. If you’re in on his legs and not in deep shit yet, don’t make things worse for yourself. There are a bunch of other low risk options. I didn’t produce state champions by teaching risky things. I also didn’t become one myself and get a D1 scholarship because I did stupid shit. I learned the hard way by doing a lot of the things I say not to do. And if that offends people so what. They will thank me later. Already a lot of people have because I have given them a system of options that increase the risk of success and limit mistakes.

Placido is too culty about Danaher and you're too stuck to your own opinions. The arm post and the bodylock can for sure be countered but that doesn't make them "not work". Plenty of wrestlers who have success doing it that way. The whole "this seems familiar" shit is also corny considering he does it from a different situation and it's a common way of finishing it although I do think he overreacted hard and probably did take some inspiration from you there, not that that's even a bad thing. This kinda thing does very little to me, but had to be addressed. You can’t have someone making that many false accusations for an hour and not say anything. I have strong opinions about certain positions based off many years of experience. I have been wrestling longer than Placido has been alive. I don’t have “beef” with anyone. Look, I ended my video saying I still like him despite him making an hour long cringey as fuck video about me. 3s of a photo. That’s quite the blowback man. I have actually tried to help him on his page with his wrestling and he is either unresponsive or deletes the comments. So while I could learn from him and vice verse, that beef is all on his side. I really don’t care, but had to address all the accusations of me making multiple accounts, LOL! Who does that? Lol! Now I guess my response to negative comments on my page should be “placido is that you?” Lol! I said what needed to be said. this is the most accurate take on this matter. However, I am firm believer that there is an “ideal” way to wrestle and grapple and Breza touches on that and for me, as a jiu jitsu guy that REALLY struggle to learn wrestling concepts until I found Brezas channel, really appreciate someone who is confident enough in their knowledge to simplify things down to “don’t go to a body lock because they’re almost always going to whizzed and you lose the position.” Can’t blame Placido for feeling like he needed to address this guys comments, things over text can be easily taken the wrong way and that’s what I feel happened here.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand when presented between learning to wrestle from a jiu jitsu purple belt and learning to wrestle from a wrestler who wrestled D1 and coached for 30+ years, the smarter of the two options is the latter. New Wave's jiu jitsu is undeniably top of the food chain. Danaher is, as you say, the man when it comes to ground work. I have had the privilege to train under a couple of elite jiu jitsu guys, including a 5x black belt world champion and another black belt world champion who has won black belt Euros, Pan, etc. With that being said, I learn my wrestling from wrestlers. I ask the jiu jitsu purple belt at my gym who has an actual judo background any questions related to throws. It's just common sense. Nobody can be the absolute best at everything, and for that, you need to go to the most qualified to seek the best information. I can say anecdotally that I've watched more than half of your videos and just from that alone, I literally could not tell you the last time someone has taken me down or thrown me, because I am applying the concepts you reiterate so frequently in your videos (don't push, stay low, don't come up to the waist, dominate inside position, etc). I probably have at best high school wrestling fundamentals after working at it seriously for the past year and a half, but that alone wins 80% of the wrestling exchanges I get in to, because even black belts in jiu jitsu are not necessarily above average wrestlers. If your system is working for me, a colored belt with 0 grappling experience before getting in to jiu jitsu, it works. Any way, thanks for providing the information you provide on your channel. It is incredible and hopefully people can learn to not take things personally and accept feedback to improve the quality of information that's being put out there.

And just to point this out -- the 5x black belt world champion who I trained under for five years ALSO learned to wrestle from a D1 wrestler who wrestled for one of the most accomplished NCAA programs in history. When he was preparing for ADCC, he worked his wrestling for HOURS under this wrestling coach. You can look at guys like JT Torres who have solid wrestling fundamentals as another example -- he works with a wrestling coach as well (J Marsh I believe is his name? I am forgetting). Anyways, some of the BEST competitive black belts in jiu jitsu understand the value of learning from masters of the grappling art they are trying to learn. There is something of value to be found when even the best of the best are doing this.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I have Jiu Jitsu coaches and Judo coaches. I wouldn’t go to wrestling coaches to learn those things. It’s the way to learn the details that make techniques work. I am super happy that everything is working for you. Solid fundamentals will get you super far. My Judo coach has systems from both sides of the body for whatever grip the other guy makes. He is not flashy. He is a 7th degree for a reason. And it’s not flashy-it’s fundamentals done well.

This so much. If you want to blend different styles, even if the end goal is to get better at jiujitsu, you have to treat each art with respect and learn it from its respective master. Think Avatar the Last Airbender lol. I wanted to learn judo so I sought out the best judoka I could find in my region and started training under a judoka who’s a former Olympic coach, not some jiujitsu coach who had few years of judo. I’m sure they could all kick my ass but there’s details you learn from those who specialize at each art. After I got into jiujitsu, I wanted to learn actual wrestling so what did I do? I joined the best wrestling coach of the region and his HS team to learn actual wrestling, not some bjj coach who knew how to do half-assed sweeps. The depth of each sport is so vast that you’re not going to learn the actual sport unless you go to someone who specialize in it. The adapting and blending must come later once you’ve actually learned the art as is.

@terrykim2748 that’s right. And this is why I don’t teach BJJ or Judo. I have been training those for years but I do not have mastery over them. With wrestling it’s different. I have spent a lifetime doing it and had some of the best coaches in the world. People get mad when I say “don’t do this” but it’s because I take into account risk vs reward. If the risk outweighs the reward then I think it’s not worth doing.

I think some of the BJJ community just lives in a bubble. The marketing around it has a tendency to imply that it’s the apex of grappling in general… I suspect the power of that narrative is even stronger when you’re the sport’s best coach and marketer’s pocket uke. Plus with BJJ’s extreme popularity right now (in the U.S.)-especially relative to every other grappling discipline-it’s probably pretty easy to train with blinders on. For what it’s worth, I don’t know how wrestling compares in the States to BJJ in terms of popularity. I just figure since it’s mostly scholastic, a lot of the high level guys probably aren’t super integrated into BJJ. I’m guessing they are training University athletes or Olympians.

Wrestling is definitely a family scholastic sport. You get started young and the family comes and watches. It’s nice support but also can be a lot of pressure. If your parents wrestled, chances are that you will too. If you are at the top of the highschool scene, you can get a collegiate wrestling scholarship. The jump is extraordinarily hard to do. The top of those guys all compete for the world and Olympic teams. The competition is unbelievable. Very few transition to Jiu Jitsu. I am hoping that changes, because wrestling is not a professional sport. There’s nowhere to go unless you are the elite and still compete on the senior level or be a coach. I coached after my competition ended. Unfortunately my job as a professor is so demanding that I cannot be a full time wrestling coach. So I then I started doing BJJ because it worked with my hours. Then I went back to Judo to get more breadth of training. Wrestling is popular but not amongst normal everyday people. It’s not like BJJ where people are there for fun all the way to world level. Wrestling is not really for fun, but always geared towards competition.

Watched the first 20 min of that vid… dude is posting publicly then calling criticism or feedback “attacks.” Jiu jitsu stand up in need of serious help, so teaching substandard techniques can’t be applaudedz

I thought it was ironic that he called me a dick, yet he made an hour long rant of being nothing but a dick, lol! Those comments we left on his single leg video weren’t harsh at all man. Lol! We were literally just busting his balls a little, because we thought he could take it. I also liked how he was like “he didn’t mention that I am a coach at ___plugs his school___.” Lmao.

1. I think you're probably right, 2. You can probably learn to be more PC to make your own life easier. (FYI I do BJJ, not a wrestler.)

Lol! An hour long rant for a 3s still photo in a 36s video I made? Lol!!! There are always lessons to learn. I am a lifelong learner. It’s easily avoidable and so moving forward I won’t call anyone out for fear it will break them.

I mean he did sound a bit crazy. Danaher smacks him around and tells him he is weak but a 3s photo makes him do an hour long rant. I guess I underestimated the mental stability of people. As a psychologist I should know better but there’s a reason I left Clinical
