Thumbs up for cars that never work for us but we still love them.😂

g3mccotter sounds like you either blew out a wheel cylinder or more likely a rusted brake line. That interior takes me back to my childhood! I love it, we had exact same inside but was maroon exterior. now I have the ford escort with the 2.0 mazda RF diesel in it. It's a great car.

the steering pops because of a bearing at the bottom of the column rite under the dash. no danger. most have same problem.

Good to know. Thanks

Dude!, your car is gorgeous. I love the original look of it all. And you have an 'upshift' indicator! That's a WAY throw back. Yeah, I had to replace my vacuum pump, too. I killed a 5 door hatchback Dasher(B1 Passat) Diesel. I drove it like it wasn't from 1980 and threw the #1 con. rod through the block. My wife was gracious to find me another dasher diesel as a wagon. I took the good vacuum pump off of the dead dasher and put it on the wagon and the brakes are better now, but not 100% Now that it is Winter 2019 (February in Oregon), I need my blower motor to turn on, but it is not. I need help getting the fan to turn. I don't know if it is the switch, relay, or fan, because all of the fuses are good.

Hey thanks man. Yeah it's the cleanest and most original example I have seen. You had me at diesel wagon haha. Unfortunately I am selling this rabbit.

@@ixlr8677 injection?
@TheLionAndTheLamb7777 ай бұрын
AFAIK it retards the injector pump slightly. To be fair though if I recall on the VW Rabbits it does say "Choke".

Word to yo mova. Had an 85 Jetta Diesel. Loved it. Took it across the prairies one time at 54mpg. Had to think ahead to pass anyone but so what.

South Hill Farm yah that's legit. Best I've seen is 45. Never on any road trips though, mostly mixed.

That looks like a starter for the gas engine in there... it's going to turn over really slowly with it. It needs more power! Nice car, btw. I love these old rabbits. I still have the one my parents bought new in 1981!
@g3mccotter5 жыл бұрын
Haha could be. My battery was dead, new battery and it fires up good. I love these rabbits also, probably 1.9 tdi swap one some day. Dang keep that rabbit in the garage
@TheLionAndTheLamb7777 ай бұрын
That was my first thought as well. The diesel starters are massive compared to the gasoline. The clutch and pressure plate are different as well.
@0Pranzetti06 жыл бұрын
The pop in your steering is your suspension.
@g3mccotter6 жыл бұрын
joshua pranzetti thanks man. It actually was the bearing on the steering column had come out and slid down the shaft. It's put back up in place and held on with a hose clamp now. I think my Volvo steering is from the bearing on top of the front suspension though.
@ben80906 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's the brake servo

Thats not a choke by the way. It's your cold start lever
@g3mccotter7 жыл бұрын
Mario Guevara oh yeah someone corrected me on the forum. I'll look into the diaphragm. I've replaced master cylinder and bled really well. It's still wasn't great but drive able. After sitting a couple weeks brake goes to the floor. Un drive able.
@marioguevara97927 жыл бұрын
Yeah i had the problem when it got really cold outside and the brake pedal was hard as a rock. I replaced my master cylinder since it was leaking fluid (i probably broke the seal on it from pressing on the brakes so hard). Ended replacing the pump diaphragm now i can brake at will. Very easy to do. The kit comes with everything. Id recommend taking the diaphragm apart and taking pictures of how it goes back together exactly.
@g3mccotter7 жыл бұрын
Mario Guevara thanks. I'll have to check that out. My brakes just go to the floor though.
@tallgiese13 жыл бұрын
Better late then never but I had a similar thing happening on my 81 Rabbit LS replaced the master cylinder and when I went to bleed the brakes, one of the rear drum cylinders was leaking but you couldn't see it from the outside.
