The book consists of letters exchanged between an American writer, Helene Hanff, and a British bookseller, Frank Doel, along with other employees of Marks & Co. Bookshop in London, located on Charing Cross Road. Their correspondence spanned twenty years, from 1949 to 1968. Although it sounds like a romance, Frank was happily married, and he and Helene never met. Throughout their letters, Helene repeatedly mentioned a visit that never materialized until after his sudden death and the closure of the shop.
Reading this book evokes a sense of nostalgia for the days when letters were cherished as the primary form of long-distance communication!
