Should the shoreline have been converted into a bulkhead? Vashon Island is accessible only by car ferry and has historically consisted of weekend cottages and small farms.

NO, the shoreline should not have been converted to a bulk head. A rich guy that made his fortune in 'healing magnet therapy' bought this place about 25 years ago. Without a permit, he replaced this huge swath of shoreline with bulkheads. Bulkheads stop the normal movement of sand. If sand is not moving normally, eel grass cannot grow. No eel grass means no place for smolts to grow up (into delicious salmon). The guy destroyed Gorsuch Creek as a salmon stream. Unfortunately, 15 years of Reaganomics starved government and made the rich so rich that governments literally cannot afford to go after even blatant, seriously destructive actions of the uber wealthy. When you have as much money as this guy has, you can keep things tied up in court forever. Cash strapped governments can't afford that. So such violations are rarely prosecuted anymore.

What a shame to lose the magical natural shoreline. The bulkhead and fence are very ugly and do not enhance anything adding insult to injury. This is perfect case of 'just because you can doesn't mean you should'. Aside from being a crook.

Nantucket in the northwest? Maybe if you are on Riviera Place in Seattle. Even when this estate was designed and built it didn't respond to local taste let alone being responsive to it's surroundings and the vernacular of place. Not to bum anyone out but this incredible, and expensive home could attempt redemption by addressing the shoreline. It looks artificial from the water and from the shore. What would be wrong with leaving enough room for the wedding tent but also give an access point to the shore and bring back the eel grass and other shore vegetation. I think many visitors would be impressed. I know I would be. And where do I anchor my sailboat, not mine you know, but someone's and ride the zodiac to shore and back?

You can tell this was a older couple and were probably birds who flew south for the winter and didnt care. Plus a bulkhead is sought after by many buyers and it doesn't lead too beach erosion.
