I was at this game with my dad. I was 12 years old and sick as a dog. My dad and I had just left an Indian Guides camping trip before heading to the game. I will never forget this game. After the Bears won, I remember people running out on the field and the stadium shaking. I miss my dad, a lot. Thanks for posting.

(4:09) Mike Singletary nails Eric Dickerson for a loss on a big 3rd down play. Years later I asked Singletary how he knew what the play was. Singletary said he watched EVERY Rams offensive play of the 1985 season and knew the formation and where Dickerson was going to run. GENIUS.

This is the greatest defense of all time. Hands down. There is no way you were going to stop them. 8 athletic guys with speed in the box with a Middle LB calling the shots and two safeties who were looking to take your head off if you caught it past 10 yards?! Brady would probably destroy the Bears' 46 defense. Dan Marino showed that a QB with a quick release could neutralize the Bears' relentless pressure and slip passes behind their front 8 time and time again. Against a defense that relied on 3 backs running man coverage in the secondary, a receiver with the ball could gain a lot of yards after the catch. That's why teams rarely run the 46 defense anymore, except maybe as a change-of-pace gimmick.
@robertoneill682
@robertoneill682 6 жыл бұрын
It would be like the Giant did to undefeated Brady he is not Dan Marino you mention a different type of quaterback plus if brady would have play in there era. He would have been knock out because he do not have that quick release like Marino have.
@10Peter25
@10Peter25 6 жыл бұрын
@@robertoneill682 Possibly. I admit I may have made more of a generalization from the proliferation of spread-style offenses now in vogue in the NFL and applied it to Tom Brady. Though Brady didn't do that badly against the Giants' relentless attempts to knock him on his ass in SB42, Steve Spagnuolo's pressure schemes did make life hard for Brady and make a big contribution to their win over the previously unbeaten Patriots (that and A LOT of luck on one play).

@Ram44
@Ram44 7 жыл бұрын
You are way too simple minded. Sure it had something to with it. With McMahon the Bears probably would move the ball and not make as many turnovers, which made it easier for the Redskins to score when the Bears did turn it over. Flutie threw 2 interceptions and fumbled. The Redskins didn't torch them. Their longest run was 12 yards. Plus Buddy Ryan was gone, which made a difference. With untested Doug Flutie, the Redskins feasted on him. I don't know why Ditka played him. With McMahon one of the winningest QBs of the 80's, the Bears would have had a much better chance.

The last pro game by Dieter (formerly known as Ralph) Brock. His only season in the NFL after playing in the CFL here in Canada dating back to the middle 1970’s. What blew me away was the point Pat Summerall made in the broadcast of this game. He mentioned that he and John Madden had done five Bears games for CBS in 1985. The only reason the Pats scored against them in Super Bowl XX is because Walter fumbled the ball inside the 20 on the first drive of the game, which resulted not in a TD but a FG. Then the Pats got a TD when the Bears were up 44 to 3 and probably not playing as hard.

We had the Sox in 1983 which was fun, the Cubs in 1984 which was really fun, but nothing compared to the Bears in 1985 (and 1984, when they went to the NFC title game). This team was full of characters right out of a movie and we loved it all. It's too bad Buddy left because had he stayed, I think things could have been different. All of the John Hughes movies en capsule exactly what my teenage years were in the northern Chicago suburbs. In fact, they were all filmed within 1-10 miles of my house. No war to worry about then either. It wasn't bad, although I didn't care for the music of the late 80's. I was into the 60's and 70's music then.

The way this defense stopped Eric Dickerson was amazing the week before against Dallas he ran for 240 yards I think

1985 Chicago Besrs defense..54 takeaways, 66 sacks, 198 points allowed ...including a 91-10 run in playoff games as a matter of fact the 46 defense ( Chicago Bears) first string didn allow a touchdown the whole playoffs..to Thursday the most dominant Defense ever. Don't believe me? The Bears beat SF(26-10) Washington (44-10) NYGiants (20-0) Dallas( 44-0) New England(20-6) all those teams won 10 or more games and of course(24-0) to go Super Bowl 20...greatest single defense EVER! PS the Bears are the only defense ever to record two straight playoff shutouts.

Buddy Ryan predicted Dickerson would fumble twice in this game, totally got in his head.
@johnwhyte2638
@johnwhyte2638 Жыл бұрын
Ryan was talking about Dickerson for good reason! The Bears had played Eric twice by 85. In 83 Eric had 127 yards rushing, 17 yards receiving and 2 TDs in a win. In 84 Eric had 149 yards rushing and 2 TDs in another win. Buddy was trying to shift the focus on Eric and not on how his defense couldn't seem to stop Eric. Even in this game Eric barely got the ball in the 2nd half yet ended up with 46 yards (more than Walter would get and 1 more fumble than Walter). In 86 Eric put 111 yards on the Bears in Chicago in a win, then in 88 put 101 yards and a TD on the Bears in a loss as a lowly Colt. In every game against Chicago Eric had a different QB and none of them were any good lol. The Bears could stick 9 men at the line knowing the ball was going to 29 and on every occasion but one the best defense of the decade couldn't stop him. Ryan was right to be worried about #29.

Fact: The Bears followed up this season by going 14-2 the next season in 1986, and actually gave up fewer points... 187 in '86 to 198 in 1985.

Pound for Pound and player for player imo the '85 Bears are better than the Steel Curtain. The Curtain was great; especially Mean Joe and Jack Ham, but they never demolished teams like this 85 Bears team did.

In five games that year, Pat and John saw the Bears' opponents score a grand total of six points. "Well men, as you know if five minutes we play the '85 Bears. What you may not know is that Pat Summerall and John Madden are calling the game. So let's just all get back in our street clothes and go home. We're not accomplishing anything here today...."

After SuperBowl XX Mike Singletary said,"what got the Patriots to the Super Bowl, we didn't see it that day." The Bears rocked that season. I wish their defense was just like the Bears defense right now because the Bears defense right now is terrible. Go Bears!
