85mm F1.4 vs 105mm F1.4 Portrait Challenge

Thank you very much for this great video. I thought for a long time what to choose for my camera Nikon Z7, Nikon Z 85mm 1.8 S, 85mm 1.4 G or 105mm 1.4. Now I know it's Nikon 85mm 1.4 G.

Thanks so much for the comment Roman. I am glad that the video was helpful. You can't go wrong with the 85mm F1.4. I love the smaller size compared to the 105mm F1.4 and the image quality is amazing.

I prefer the 105mm. The subject isolation and background blur are more appealing to me. If you have to shoot wide open, the 105mm will provide a better results, but NO lens will give sharp eyes (on multiple subjects) when they are not on the same focal plane.

I think the 105mm f1.4 is a gem. The background compression is unbeatable. Nikon should make a new version native for z mount and with even better optics.

I would love to see a Z version of the 105mm F1.4. I'm sure we will get one - it is just a matter of when.

So.. say you have an assignment which involves a lot of full body portraits, the 105mm is more suitable?!

I don't think you can go wrong with either Kevin. It depends what you are looking for when you are capturing those full body portraits. If you want a bit of a blurrier background then go for the 105mm. If you want to be nearer to your subject and have a closer working distance so it might be easier to communicate, then the 85mm is better.

You can't go wrong with either one. The 85mm is smaller and lighter so that can make a difference when you have a long day of photography at a wedding.

Would you need the 105mm if you have the 85mm? I'm just trying to understand and figure out if I need the 105mm and if it would make a big difference in my photography business. Thanks for your feedback in advance.

In my opinion, if you have the 85mm, then the 105mm won't make that much of a difference in your photography business. You could try renting one and see if it gives you more than you get with the 85mm. The 85mm is a lot smaller and lighter and easier to carry around.

Both lenses are great for the D850.
