I have shot both glasses for hundreds of outdoor portrait/model shoots like these, and at the end I decided to keep the Canon 85 1.2, for quite a few reasons: - It handles complex background much better at 1.2 (especially branches, huge difference) - It is WAY less front heavy than the Sigma. I can easily hold the Canon one handed for long time, but with the Sigma, it's so much twist on the wrist. - The Canon is prone to flare, but if you know what you are doing, you can get some great artistic flare, if you are aiming the lens in a good angle - Smaller size, nuff said. - The light transmission is way way better on the Canon, I can shoot lower ISO after sunset - For full body shots, the 1.2 does make a difference in the bokeh. - The Canon is very sharp lens. There is not much difference in sharpness between these two lenses (especially for practical use) And yes, the Canon has tons of CA, but it can be corrected with a single mouse click. Somehow the overall rendering is just worth it.

EDC Gadgets I really wish we saw straight out of camera and wide open for both lenses. Thanks for the input. I brought the 50 1.2L for a great price. Wish I got the 85 though.
@juliatrotti6 жыл бұрын
Love your reasoning! I came to pretty much the same conclusions, I found the Sigma was a little confused when shooting with a busy background and I absolutely looooove the lens flare the Canon 85 produces - its my favourite lens flare from any lenses I've used :D
@EDCGadgets6 жыл бұрын
Yes that lensflare is so cinematic on the 1.2 :D I think the Sigma is incredible bang for the buck, but it's very clinical, and that extra size is just annoying after many hours of shoots. I wonder if you will create a "final conclusion" video between these two lenses, it would be very interesting to hear your experience.

@@juliatrotti Hi Julia Thanks for your great videos. I retuned the new Canon 85mm 1.4 to get the more expensive and out of date 1.2 v2 version because there was something magical with this lens, the depth of the blacks on a B/W portrait coupled with the sweetness of the rendering sets it apart from the rest. I'm still looking for an option to replace my 50mm 1.2, i've tried them all (almost) but keep returning to that lens. Please Canon make a update tothe 50mm 1.2, it's long overdue. keep on the good job.

It's absolutely amazing what Sigma has done with their ART line and how they're able to offer that for a relatively good price. Still, I feel that their lenses are too sharp. Hey, Julia! These photos are STUNNING! You did an amazing job capturing the model in beautiful natural light. Question, do you ever use a light reflector when shooting midday? How do you tackle these situations?

Is sharpness everything? We can push the sharpness in post production also. What i believe is how the bokeh should decide the lens capabilities. Thats something can't be done in post.

And that's all that matters in portrait photography, right?

Yes sharp photo is the most important part on Portrait, bokeh is easy in post-proc. Sharping is not so easy in post. You need a sharp photo straight from the camera for a good Portrait, Period! You can help in post, but no as good as straight from the camera. Some details you can't make in post no matter how good you are editing.
