I actually thought that 4wd shaft seal had to be done internally. Hmmm may need to go ahead and change mine then cause it leaks. I did all the rest

Hello sir, could you help me? I have a 1984 Toyota Tercel 4wd, the manual transmission is failing. I want to replace it with a 1988 Toyota Tercel 4wd manual transmission. I would like to know if it is compatible? Or will I have to make other modifications to make it compatible? Please help me.

I believe you already messaged me on Instagram, but just in case anyone else is searching. The transmission itself is interchangeable. You will have to match the differential ratios with whatever you are installing in the car because the 83/84 models use a 3.73 gear ratio in the diff and the 1985+ models use a 4.1. The easiest way to tell what ratio gears a transmission will have is by looking at the top. If it has two sensors (rev + 4wd) , it is a 3.73/early trans. The 85 plus will have 3 sensors on top. (Rev, 4wd, EL) The differentials can easily be swapped and it is not necessary to have all 3 sensors hooked up. The EL harness can remain open and unused.
