I know you probably won't see this because I'm just now watching these videos 3 years after the fact, but i just could not stop smiling for the entire video. My garden is full of sprouts thanks in part to the knowledge I've gained from your channel. The joy you take in growing things and your excitement at bringing back a potentially extinct variety is contagious. The world is so full of negativity now and it seems so many people are only interested in tearing each other down, yet you provide a bright spot of hope. I've loved seeing your daughter grow as well... my daughter is about the same age. I respect you and wish you good health and fortune in all your endeavors.

I'd like to make a few suggestions if I may. To ensure the survival of this tomato variety, your focus should be on propagation. After you successfully propagate this plant, you should send them(edit: rooted cuttings) to as many people around the world as possible. This will ensure that any local diseases you may have are not an issue. You should encourage the maximum vegetative growth from this plant, thereby increasing the number of potential cuttings/suckers you can take, and send to as many different people in as many different places as you possibly can. Once the mother plant gets a virus, all cuttings taken from this plant will have the virus too. So send out your first cutting/sucker as early as you possibly can. Don't wait and send them out all at once, because every day you wait is an unneccesary risk.

Another thing to mention is, when you send out the cuttings, encourage as many people as possible to propagate and distribute the cuttings themselves. Remember, the only way to keep this variety alive is through healthy, virus free cuttings. Seeds will be forever an impossibility.

You can't really send the cuttings unless you root them first. Secondly, he could use those cuttings to make more plants for himself and increase his chances of success. Thirdly, this is likely a heirloom variety so if you collect seeds from all of the plants that you are able to produce, even though they are identical genetically, the seeds won't be so you're not necessarily in trouble with the gene pool. You can just save seeds from multiple plants sprouted from seeds in the next season.

Food Forest if you save seeds from a hybrid tomato variety, the genetics are not identical to the parent plant. there is absolutely no way to save seed from MIgardeners plant.

Food Forest If he hoards all his cuttings, he increases the risk of disease wiping them all out. Tomato viruses should be of great concern. (especially an 87 year old variety that has zero resistance to today's tomato illnesses)

Yea, this video is from 2016, and its now 2023 (6 yrs later), but I'm still Wowed by your accomplishments! I wish there were a way to connect this video to an update on what happened to this instinct variety that you revived. It was fun to see the excitement from you, Luke as you shared this with your followers. I share that excitement when I have successfully germinated & sprouted my seeds, as I'm still not very confident in that vs just doing the easy by buying veggie plants to plop into the garden. I had read an academic article that said that soaking seeds in sugar water actually had the effect of decreasing the germination rate in multiple tests. I believe I linked it to the first video you made about this. I, personally, would have thought that providing beneficial organisms and not keeping it sterile would have helped it but I'm really glad you got it to grow either way and I'm super excited to see how it turns out.

Well, I am a new subscriber and I am totally excited. I am so hopeful he will have produced by this time enough of this tomato seed that I can buy some and further expand what was once lost but is now a viable growing resurrection tomato! I would love to get some of the ancient egyption grains that were found in the pyramids and grown but I am sure the universities are not going to let those go out yet.

It's a hybrid, so cuttings/cloning is the only way to propagate this variety. There will never be another seed of this variety unfortunately.

It's not prudent to twist yourself into a pretzel pleasing those kind of soul suckers...especially when you have a family and business to keep vital. Giving in to people like that will just drive you into the ground, and the entitled soul suckers will just demand more out of you....they never get enough to fill their black hole souls.

There is a seed storage program, that is putting away seeds to be used in case of a disaster. it is nice to know that those saved seeds have a possibility of being useful. Science fiction and science fact blending together. Wonderful!

It's all in how the seed was stored. I have planted tomato seeds dated from the 70's and gotten 90% germination/sprouting. They were always kept in bags stored in ball jars in the refrigerator. I also have some commercially extinct squash somewhere that I should grow for seed.

Well done ! (I have seen the next video re the tomato plant too!) ... and now I will NOT give up on my seeds from the Island of Crete that I bought many years ago on holiday. I grew some the first couple of years ... and then forgot about them. I shall definitely try this method with them and see if I can get some more of them .. It's wonderful to bring back seed that is that old and I heard you say is not available commercially anymore, but it is a stretch to say you have the last seed of an extinct tomato. Individuals could very well be growing it.

Luke, Although my old seed is not 87 years old but I do have 62 year old seed. I will agree with others on the problems with sprouting but it does work. Last year I planted 120 seeds of various seeds. Out of the 120 I was able to germinate 94 of them and sprout 56 of those. Of the 56 seedlings 38 of them grew to full productive plants that lasted the entire growing season. I even took a cutting from one of the tomato plants that I put in a bucket and grew all winter in my bathroom and was able to have delicious tomatoes all winter. The only advice I would give you at this point is be careful with the fertilizer. I found my best success tender plants was to fertilize at 1/4 strength.

if you get the tomato plant rather large you could take cuttings and keep 2 or 3 in the house under your lights, they could fruit then right? but I think it'll be awesome if you dig the plant up and keep it inside. they do well when you dig it up ☺ and take as many cuttings as you can

One major hurdle has passed. Once it has gotten past the epigeous stage, the most essential thing now is LOTS of light. It's main source of energy is photosynthesis through the cotyledons. Your next major hurdle will be damping off. BTW, what kind of mix is that? It looks a little bit too compacted to me and way too wet, but just might be my old eyes :-) Looking forward to updates.

why would anyone not understand that a seed that is 80+ years old is not going just sprout over night. do you see alot of 80 + year old people just get up and start running round like a small children no its cus there old. yes things take time to jump start. i have even planted tomato seeds that take months and i mean months to sprout becus they are on the porch and it through the winter but as soon as spring is here i got little green babies all over the place.. you are doing i wonderful job i appreciate all the videos keep them up thamks
