12:00 - Search video called "Convert Your MULTIMETER into an accurate SHORT CIRCUIT TRACER Finder for less than $1 Build This DIY" From channel Learn Electronics Repair. You have good multimeter, you can use it to find shorted mosfet. About mosfets, I could be wrong, but 6 are HIGH side, 6 are LOW side. Shorted mosfet made current go to ground probably on LOW side, if one is shorted on HIGH side, then its on path to kill APU. If I remember correctly.
@Adrian_Finn Жыл бұрын
He also has a video on a few different methods of how you can find a shorted mosfet, one with an ESR meter and one with a milliohm metre and does a brief circuit diagram of why that works. Toltecs method is just as valid and I would recommend for a beginner to do this to understand how that particular circuit works, especially a beginner who doesn't have all those tools, it should be learned the manual way before you use tools to make it more quicker and convenient.
@ToltecMerc Жыл бұрын
I don't believe that these are simple MOSFETs. I believe they are complete DC-DC converter ICs containing a high an low side FET and the control circuitry in one package. I injected 1V where the 12V would connect and I measure 0.7 at the APU. I believe the internal high side MOSFET shorted. I have heard of using the multimeter as to find shorts by injecting current and measuring millivolts of voltage drop. The lowest voltage read should be the closest to the short.
@orion310591RS Жыл бұрын
@@ToltecMerc Yes thats the case with mV scale and voltage drop. You could identify short without desoldering coils.
@macwake Жыл бұрын
You're right, all the stuff is in parallel, but not quite - the phases run together _after_ the coils. The trick is to measure resistance with an ESR meter - with several kHz, the coil's resistance goes way up, and you can detect shorted APU mosfets without having to desolder every coil. Also, when injecting voltage in the APU area, it may be wise to put the ground lead on APU VCore (on the end of the coils that go to the APU). This way you protect the APU from overvoltage, in case the short is intermittent or burns away while you're injecting and you accidently forgot to set voltage clip to .8/.9V. Wrote this when 12:25 into the video, without sneaking ;)
@ToltecMerc Жыл бұрын
That's an excellent tip! I do have a homemade ESR meter that runs at 100kHz. I'm sure those coils would look very high impedance at that frequency. I'll give it a try next time. Thanks!
@mattia7562 Жыл бұрын
nice tip! but just one clarification: what do you exactly mean saying "with several kHz, the coil's resistance goes way up"? Should the resistance in that case go down fi shorted? Thank you in advance
@macwake Жыл бұрын
@@mattia7562 Generally speaking, a coil's resistance goes up with rising frequency. In normal ohms mode, the low resistance of the coils (less than .1 Ohm) make it hard to find shorted mosfets, since they all seem to be connected through the coils, as practically everything reads short. When measuring resistance with, say, 100kHz, the coils have high resistance. This has the same effect as lifting all the coils, as you can properly measure in-circuit.

Good idea is to measure difference in diode mode between output (switch) and control pin (like gate). In 90% cases you can detect faulty drmos without desoldering of coils.

Another brilliant and logical troubleshooting session, thanks for sharing! Glad this was apparently not just s simple MOSFET and the internal short didn't send 12V to the APU. Also, with a .35Ohm short to ground, surely the power supply would shut down immediately, no? Your bench supply, however, may just keep going... 😛

I have experienced this on an xbox one s. Even though the source drain all showed low resistance to ground (processor resistance) on all MOSFETs due to parallel, the gate of the bad MOSFET was also short and the good MOSFETs gave 0.6v in diode mode to ground. So I didn't need to remove the coils.

I think a better way is to do as someone else commented below. Next time I will try an ESR meter that I have that runs at 100khz. Hopefully the coils will give a high impedance at that frequency and I will be able to see a shorted MOSFET without the APU low resistance interfering
