The Setup for How to Ski with a Speedwing

Do you know how to ski? Do you know how to fly a paraglider? Speed-riding is easier than you think with proper coaching. You can learn in Utah, Idaho, or California. Here is step by step how to set it up. My friend recorded it when I was helping her and I figured someone else might be able to use it as well. Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions!

To learn to speedride you need multiple skills. First learn to ski, then learn to fly a paraglider, then speedwing, then you combine the two. If you already have some of these skills then you are on your way!

Thanks for all the videos! Everything helps, but to give back a little, a couple of things I have found in my journey to speedride: 1. If the snow is deep you can push the tails of your skis into the wall of the shelf you make for them. They’ll be flat and stay in place while being pointed down hill. At that point it’s a gentle rock to launch. This minimizes moving your skis so there’s no risk of stepping on lines or getting tangled in your bindings. 2. Setting up for a reverse launch when forward launching, especially with all the extra ski gear on can turn into a tangled mess (even you got tangled in your vid). That was how I was taught on my speedflying course and especially being newer it made setting up frustrating. I was able to learn how to clip in while facing downhill, again eliminating movement that resulted in lines getting caught on gear and messing up my horseshoe. My set up time is now closer to 5 mins, and that is comfortable, not rushed and tangle and hook-up free. I still use that 180 method with the risers but only on reverse launches. Hopefully that adds!

Kelie Bailey yea, 9990, the first shot is at Mt. Baker. Similar backcountry situation. Yea, out of bounds they tolerate it. We take off out of bounds and land out of bounds.

Maybe it's just me and my age. But I look at it this way. You're either skiing or flying a small wing. Skiing is one thing, flying a tiny Wing is something else. Never could see combining them both. Because you can't be more than 50% skiing or 50% flying with skis. It's just me. Good video though. He keeps saying just like a Paraglider... It Is a Paraglider... Isn't it???...

@@SteepVisions Which is a Paraglider... you get rated to fly paraglider when you take instruction... paraglider family at least... I'm almost 80 been flying paraglider since they were invented maybe I'm coming down with Alzheimer's. At any rate I fly very docile wings today let all you youngsters fly that hot shit stuff. LOL Tried a couple of speed Wings last year it was okay just different I just like the floaty feeling with a paraglider speed wing is over too quick. To each his own.

I'll disagree on that. I think they're different enough. That said, to each their own. In France, speedriding is taught as a standalone activity without prior paragliding training necessary.

​@@dwightbernheimer331 Can't say it's necessarily a smart idea unless maybe you've had prior skydiving experience... One chick did get kinda banged up when she was learning and every year I hear of someone stall spinning a barrel roll at valfrejus... That said I think a week of paragliding instruction is enough to have someone look into speedflying if that's what they want to do. Also skydivers learning speedflying should have a long weather course since that's something that's not discussed much at DZ's.

I respectfully disagree with what you are doing! Teaching speed riding online makes this sport even more accessible without proper training under a coach and makes it look way easier and less dangerous than it is. There are people out there that want to try this sport and are not willing to pay someone to coach them, especially when basic info is available online, thus putting themselves in danger and we know what that means. Usually these people do not listen well and a disclaimer will not prevent them from trying... Trying in this sport is trying not to die with no skill and no supervision... I just hope people will not die because of you opening the door for them into this sport. If you want to launch your school, there are other methods to do that, speed riding will not bring you a huge audience anyways, if that is what you are looking for. There are no schools doing what you do for a reason... please reconsider!
