Karla Roth-Bardinas was a reporter for News 12 New Jersey on September 11th. She had the day off and was feeding her 20 month old son when the news broke about the attack on The World Trade Center. She very quickly reported for work, and spent weeks covering the story from Liberty State Park in Jersey City, directly from the devastated site in Lower Manhattan. She had an all too clear view of the smoking remains across the Hudson River. Her most vivid memory was tearful people, begging her to please show a picture of their missing loved ones on tv. Even weeks later, many never gave up hope...maybe their loved one was hospitalized somewhere, too badly injured to call. Eventually, the News Director of News 12 made the heartbreaking decision to stop showing the pictures of the missing.
Roth-Bardinas won an award for a story she covered after 9/11, following the painfully long recovery of Port Authority police officer Will Jimeno who, with his Sergeant, John McLoughlin, was trapped in the rubble of the collapse of the North Tower. Their story was dramatized in the Oliver Stone 2006 movie “World Trade Center”, starring Nicolas Cage and Michael Pena.

I've often heard it said that while we all hope there's no repeats of September 11, we could all use another September 12. As horrific as September 11 was, I'll never forget the feeling of unity we all felt in the following days. I think that feeling was a huge first step in the healing process. I think Toby Keith captured that feeling very well in the song "Courtesy Of The Red White And Blue (The Angry American)."

Thank you for telling your story, Karla! It’s amazing to hear from people from all walks of life how 9/11 affected them, and continues to do so. I must admit I was shocked about your employer forbidding the wearing of the American flag. What an absolute WRONG time in history to make such a ruling! I can totally understand how outraged viewers must have been! It was the glue that held us together, it reached all the way across to the West coast here!

Thank you for sharing your story. I think the most disturbing part were of the people trapped in the towers were never going to be rescued! Also many people were incinerated! This was a war zone not just a fire or an accident! This was an act of war by terrorists from the Middle East! Our military really should have been brought into the clean up too!

The unity was absolutely beautiful to witness ❤ it was everywhere and it felt miraculous . Maybe not peace on earth but there was peace on the united states . 🇺🇲 i will never forget the afternoon of 9/11 and as everyone was trying to find there way home on foot . One man had his electric guitar and started playing THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. Thousands of people some injured some covered in the white soot old young black white brown red it didn't matter you could hear a pin drop . The unique sound to our beloved song never had that much meaning as it did in that moment. I remember thinking... they tried so desperately hard to destroy us and we are here experiencing pure love for our country in this tragedy . They didn't succeed. Its a shame it was short lived but after all we are only human .

Great series, though poignant and sad, laced with much tragedy. --- The day that changed America, and indeed the World!

Her will jimeno story doesn’t seem correct compared to how will tells it. Oh, and it was 16 people were rescued not 13.

Of course his first-hand memories are not going to be the same as what she remembers hearing about. Especially since some of her recall involves the movie, while he underwent extreme (and prolonged) trauma. Memory isn’t like an object stored, it is more like a recipe or pattern for making one. People’s memories do vary. Different things are noticed, different things are seen as significant, different things are conflated or telescoped together, different things are forgotten or retrieved, different things are reconstructed by logic and extrapolation.
