I worked at a job where I was the only black person and I hated it. I’m from the United States so the racism here is terrible. I was always asked for my opinion on politics and different societal issues. If I ever straightened my hair I was nervous about going to work because I knew they would “go crazy” over my hair. Any slight change in appearance gave me anxiety. People said things to me that were very inappropriate in the workplace. I tried to socialize as much as I could but I always felt weird. My co-workers weren’t extremely terrible but they had their moments. I hope you can find your groove in the workplace. It can be hard.

Racism in the UK I’d say is probably a lot more subtle to the point where you’re questioning whether it’s actually racism and you start to lose your mind because you think you’re the problem. Overt racism still exists but I would say it’s not as prevalent as the US perhaps. I work with lovely people and no one has ever said anything to make me uncomfortable but I just don’t feel culturally connected to them because we’re so different. Everything from religion to music to general culture. Everything feels forced and unnatural. I go to socials by force and most of the time I’m ready to leave. I come home socially drained (introvert in me) but I don’t know if this is something I’m suppose to get used to because this is a reality for a lot of black people. Next step would honestly be to find a fully remote job so I don’t have to deal with it. Thanks for sharing your story, I hope it gets better for you too 😊

I'm currently applying to office/clerical jobs but it doesn't seem as easy as it looks. When i see other people do it at doctors offices it looks easy. But obviously I know no job is easy. I had a job last year at a law firm doing clerical work but quit after three days. Now I'm doing another Clerical job at another place and I'm so nervous cuz this is my second chance and i don't wanna mess it up. If it gets too hard i just have push through can't give up And I feel you I'm an introvert too

I felt what you said to the core about it being hard to connect && They did the baby picture activity on my team for a virtual baby shower and it was so unfair being the only black person like…😂.

Girl, i feel you. I am the only black person on my team and 1 of 5 colored people in the whole company, and 1 of 2 black people (about 50 people). They are good people, but babes, they dont get it. One thing that helps me is that i have kids, so once my day is done, im out of there. Dont even ask me to go anywhere because im not going lol.
