9# 6 Meter Gilbertisland(Kiribati)proa from Klaus Deppermann --2020--

A 6 meter Gilbertisland(Kiribati)proa built in the early 1980`s and since then further developed by Klaus deppermann.

I do enjoy the constant development of this proa. Among others, the concept of the flying lower sheets block seems a very interesting option, because it allows to resign from two sheets if a yard rail is applied. Wondering when/if Reto will follow this solution ;)

You can make it much easier where you can stay sitting in the same seating position. Since the boom is solid you can run the sail sheets from one hull anchor point ( front) to the boom pulley and then go to the other hull anchor point ( rear) and pass the sheet under the rail to the seating position. (Basically, this system already exists on the mainmast). With this arrangement, both the sail and the mast can travel on their respective rail without fouling any sheets when their respective looped rope arrangement is activated from the seating position. Hence from the seating position, one can handle the sheets, the sail loop, and the mast loop and one could arrange for a front and rear rudder working together which would make it safer and easier to handle in rougher seas for the lone sailor.

Hallo, no I don't have proper drawings only the rough measurements from the video. There are free drawings for a proa series google "P5 Proa". Reto from the channel "Segelreto" has many good videos of his p5 on youtube. I have improved the rig since the video. Look at "shunting with a traveler rail 2021" Last winter I improved it further and am now done with the development. In a few weeks I'll upload a video of the final rig which would also be suitable for larger boats.

Thank you for share this great boat again. I think about proa for more than 3 years)) and i also had idea about shunting with rail guide, but i planned to organise shunting from the middle of deck, using blocks and А-shape mast. I would ask you, how you rig works when wind is not stable, and it changes direction often?

Hallo, I have also now changed the system so that I can operate everything from the middle. I just have to pull one rope to shunten the rigg. And the mast does not need to be moved anymore. This all works very simply now. I will make a video of it soon. I also started with a frame but had to realize that it has very big advantages if you can trim the mast in the transverse direction. As I described it in my video. "Increase of speed against the wind by 100%" But then you have to install stays and adjustable shroud. To have the rigg on all courses in a safe position.

Not a fan of the crab claw sail...gibbons rig lateen...but I need to ask why the tracked mast...why not stepped at half length of the boat & lower on the yard to just pivot the mast...sail also seems a very heavy cloth...cheers from nz

Hallo Errol, I do not know if I understood your question correctly. I stay for now with crab claw sail because it is the traditionalI sail for proas. I will continue to optimise it for my boat. But I also see the gibbons rig as the best modern option. The sailcloth seems havey because the design is paintet on. And I dont want to make big changes on Klaus Proa. If I try out something new I will do this at my one over the next years. Best regards from Flensburg

@@fjordproa6510 traditional crabclaw masts attach also at mid point of the yard/spar & step at hull midway...traditionally...the yard spar is double the length of the mast...particularly with your track traveler as the yard is swapped ends, as the yard passes the mast they support each other through shunts...your rig just looks way too heavy for the size of your sail, & the sail looks too small for a 6mtr...PS Lateen is a truely traditional pacific rig as is the square sail

If you mean Klaus he is 80+ years old now and retired from sailing. He's doing well. But he gave me the proa to continue the project.
