Hi Stefan, In my orchard I found 2 wild asparagus plants obviously planted by birds. Under pears and near an actinidia vine. They were delicious last year. This spring I planted 20 more between trees. I think it's a jolly good plant for a permaculture orchard.

Hey Stefan, Your rant on diversity makes a lot of good sense. My grandfather 60 years back used to talk about mixing White Dutch, Kentucky Bluegrass, fescue, and rye together. As I recall he said the mix made a better lawn. Imagine that? Anyway, I listened to a few hours of Dr. Elaine pontificate and I did not think she had much to say. What comes from you, Stefan, makes more sense.

Thanks but Elaine has fantastic info about the diversity in soil, it’s just mostly invisible.

Man you couldn't have said it any better! It blows my mind that people want that mono culture lawn. I live in row crop country here in Arkansas and it drives me crazy. If someone doesn't believe this, commit 10-20 square feet to a bio diverse planting (or weeds) and watch the birds and other animals come in. Now you have set me into a RANT Stefan. Thanks for another great video man! This hits home for me. Paxton

I loved seeing the diverse grain farm. Thanks. Every summer near our place, I see millions of acres planted exclusively to wheat. While it is a magnificent sight, I can't help feeling a little sad for the earth.

I am very glad that my wood/firewood plantation has several different tree species. A high value tree is the ash for its use in tool handles, etc. As tempting as that was I am glad that I planted 5 other species in the farmland I was reclaiming from long crop use. Today the emerald ash borer, EAB, is killing off many of my ash trees but I can use that as a way to select for thinning my trees that are about 8 inches DBH. The cottonwoods, eastern red cedar and similar that found their way back into my planting are adding to my remaining 5 planted species and I am closer to 8 or 9 species over all. Pest and disease resistance are a huge factor favoring diverse plantings.

Very interesting. I was watching a Ted talk by a forester in Oregon. He was talking about how early forests were not only bio-diverse in species but also habitat. The specific topic was the increase in the massive forest fires we are having. He talked about how precut forests weren't expansive and had a lot of grassy, meadow-like areas mixed in and around the other portions of the forest. This makes sense. Everything is happening on the edges. I imagine the forest moving and shifting over time. Old trees die and young saplings fill in. Imagine all the seeds being dropped in the meadows that would shift and become part of the forest. Death and renewal within a semi-enclosed system.

As I listened to this video, I was reminded that many other things are monocultures, not just nature. Google, KZbin, Farcebook, and our mainstream media. Lack of diversity is a result of our own making. Convenience, economies of scale, even peer pressure are the excuses we use to justify them as the norm. To change this, mankind has to change its thinking. This video demonstrates the rationale of the necessity to diversify our thoughts and practices. Think independently, consider the abstract. Otherwise we are conforming to the dubious axiom, ‘That’s the way it has always been’ mentality which doesn’t consider and actually conflicts with the status quo. Far simpler to follow, rather than lead. Nature doesn’t comply with mankind’s rules. When we attempt to impose our will, nature will respond. This is the basis for Stefan’s practices. Consider the impacts of our meddling. For example, by artificially fertilizing, we may create excessive nitrogen in the soil. The result is aphids attacking our plants. (Nitrogen good, let’s apply more. Until nature tells us, too much!) Dare to be different. Nature is a complex, resilient fabric covering Earth and it is smarter than mankind. It will respond to maintain homeostasis.

I can't tell you how excited I am to start my garden! I have 9 trees ordered for the spring, 3 apples, 3 pears, and 3 nitrogen fixers, 3 treeoles! I think you plant your trees 10 feet apart but how far apart are the rows?

Sounds like a plan. Just a question what kind of plant are treeoles? Space between the rows are 12-24’ depending on the rootstock. Ask your nursery what they recommend for the cultivars chosen and rootstock used.
@sisterinspeed
@sisterinspeed 5 жыл бұрын
Haha, I mean trios! I plan to buy 9 more next year, and 9 the year after that, to keep extending my rows (3 rows). My field is 600' long by about 100' wide. I think I have room for 6 rows, just not the budget. What I meant to ask is how wide are the rows you walk in? The space between the rows.

I’m trying to get the Blue Jays to eat peanuts from my ledge. Any ideas? This morning I shoved peanuts into a nearby fence top leading to my window seal. Next I’ll rubber cement some peanuts onto a board that I’ll cross from the fence to my window seal. It is very windy today.
@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 5 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to cement them, just tie a string around the center of the peanut shell. Blue jays are smart they know what time you feed them. Be consistent and always put out the peanuts at the same time. Soon they will be there before that time and call and wait.
@portiaholliday8741
@portiaholliday8741 5 жыл бұрын
@@StefanSobkowiak Yes, I'm impressed with their intelligence, but of course quite skittish like one of my domestic rabbits. Since it is windy the rubber cement will prevent them from flailing around. I did wedge one in the fence, but it was ignored. I am impressed with how the Blue Jay posts on the fence and looks all around. I'm sure they're well aware that the peanuts are on the window seal. They are out of the rain on the seal. A board to lead them may also be helpful.

Mono-culture is for idiots, lots of farmers in NZ try for mono-cultures and the amount of energy put into trying to achieve a mono-culture is absurd. Just let what's there grow by it's own volition, it is there for a reason let it add to the dynamic of the landscape/soil. Mono doesn't work nature proves this time and again. Every plant helps it's neighbors in a multitude of ways. Let nature again be our teacher. Wise up peeps. You don't need to purchase any of the chemical compounds of the big companies when you bio diversify nature has an organisum for every task and it is free. Keep your money in your pocket roll your profits over into your family business and cut the big companies out from the equation. The Earth needs you to do this to give us all a chance of survival, the other way is poisoning everything and I do mean everything.

Well I was one of the 'idiots' for many years. Still have a remnant 'idiot' block. I would not be so harsh with them, it's a learning process and we tend to stick to what we know.
