I don't get who this is targeting. 1) Graphic designers know all this 2) It didn't help me understand graphic design. Like, cool, I need to pick the right font. I knew that, doesn't help me pick the right one. This was a waste of time and not informative at all. And a lot of it, I feel, is built over time with trial, error and evolution rather than knowing it all from the get go. All these companies re-brand regularly anyways.

As a designer working in the public sector, I've sadly become stuck over the last five years. Mostly because it's an environment where any random manager or higher, will dictate your design based on their personal taste (which is ALWAYS amazing) and your job is to be the 'pencil' that brings it to life. They of course get the credit for the product...but the designer is treated like someone scribbling in the corner with crayons and not doing 'real work.' I've subscribed to your site and newsletter just now, because in the space of watching two videos I felt excited again! You validated the fact that I do have a clue what I'm doing, even if my 'clients' (aka. bosses) don't want to listen. :-/ And that design isn't some random "fun" thing or about making things look "pretty"--it's a skill that takes years to master and we never stop learning, because design trends will always change.
@PhilipVanDusen6 жыл бұрын
Andeen, Thanks for the super insightful comment! You are so totally right and you've articulated the biggest frustration we all have as designers. Check out a few of my videos on design strategy. Framing your presentation of your work in strategic business theory and consumer-centric terms rather than aesthetic ones is the KEY to selling your ideas and design through to clients.
@andeendrayton12536 жыл бұрын
I most definitely will! Wish I'd come across your site a few months earlier. I literally resigned from a project on Friday because one of the major components was re-branding the organization. As much as I tried to explain it from the strategic angle (since they were also launching a new three-year strategy), the 'boss' refused to listen and took it as a personal attack on her taste, so she doubled down and it was crazy-making. If I'd had your tips in advance, I might have had more ammo to make a dent. LOL! Ah well, live and learn. :)
@PhilipVanDusen6 жыл бұрын
You're not alone. I've bailed on lucrative client projects because of crazy-making. Life is too short to suffer the insufferable. If you're having any problems you'd like me to do a video about my POV on, let me know. I take requests. email me though my website. I'm getting so many comments these days I can't keep up and I don't want to miss it. Also, sub to my newsletter - I share stuff you might like there too. Hope to "see" you back.

I can totally relate to your experience. I often deal with managers and colleagues that are happy to give feedback on designs however when challenged, their reasoning often falls flat...and instead of accepting and moving forward, they take it personally. Some people have a very hard time in understanding what is personal opinion and what is not.
@elefantrising3 жыл бұрын
I work as an Art Director I went to school for Commercial Art. I have lead many a designer in my time and unfortunately I experienced what you are going through as a young designer. I feel that designers need to design and sometimes those designs are not how I would execute or solve the problem but it is solved by the designer. I choose to not change my designers vision in fact I embrace it. I design a lot as well in my job which really helps me as well. Like there are good there are bad directors, it is all part of the process.

Thank you for sharing this content with us. I had been fumbling with my brand image. I've failed in the past in this area because I'm a small solopreneur and thought branding was for the likes of the big boys. How wrong I was. Lessons learnt - BRAND YOUR STUFF! I now fully understand the power of branding and how it drives your marketing, social media, sales......everything! Branding and Marketing is a pain point for me (actually most creative is) but your instruction and download provides the uninitiated with a clear roadmap of what needs doing to create an MVB and move forward from there. I also watched another video on your channel about 5 startup mistakes, one of which you point out it that striving for a finished and perfect brand is to be avoided and so I take note! As entrepreneurs, we always avoid what we hate doing, but your guidance here makes the uncomfortable much more comfortable. Many thanks, and so pleased to have found your KZbin channel. Have a great day!

I think there has to be a certain point that is critical, and this is: design is an universe, and no guide is absolute. For example, right now I am working on the personal brand of a fashion designer, and there are a couple of things that I have to take into account like store fronts, that you wouldn't have into account on other projects like a software developing company, on the other hand this software development company is far more likely to have EXTENSIVE animation elements because the branding will appear in the software and in videos and trailers and in social media, but store fronts will not be as important because generally, software studios don't use stores as their primary selling checkpoint. Anyway, amazing video and really helped me, loved it!

Hi Phillip. What should a Designers appearance look like? How important is the way Designers dress and present themselves?

Jarmelo, I just did a video talking about this very subject a few videos ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKOzpXWQeMqHoZo Personal Branding with Personal Style. I'm of the opinion that anything you can do to make yourself stand out from the crowd is good. You just have to do it consistently. Style - or how you look is a very personal thing. Just be authentic to who you are as a person.

Philip VanDusen Yo that's wassup Phillip. I was thinking to get larger clients. I had to always wear button downs and loafers... But you got me motivated to add some personal swag... Thanks man!

When it comes to interaction with clients: You can never dress up too well, but you can dress too casual. Always err on the side of formal. No one wants a sloppy designer - or one who doesn't seem to care. Business is business.
