UPDATE 1: On the NW759, you can avoid the "HOLY BALLS!" experience and just use the arrow buttons to adjust the volume. Special thanks to you guys for the heads up! UPDATE 2: Added eBay links as some of the monitors have better pricing there.

Doesn't the Panasonic G7 have an HDMI out?
@EposVox7 жыл бұрын
It does, but it can't output via HDMI and record internally at the same time - the two use different color spaces - so if you wanna use a monitor with it, it has to be a recorder, too!

EposVox thanks for the heads up on that

EposVox that's wild! I know on the a6300, of outputting HDMI and recording internally, the liveview goes out, not the monitor. Some cameras have the option to toggle this, like FS7 I think - it was set to turn off the HDMI monitor and not the live view by default I think. Crazy if there isn't such a setting on the G7!

Great overview! I bought the Feelworld F7 a few months back and it has been one of my best gear purchases (Although the auto power on is insanely annoying). Wish I would have known about the Bestview S7 before buying it as it seems to address a lot of the issues I have with the Feelworld F7. I'm also pretty jealous of the Viltrox DC-70 build quality and that super fast flip out sun shade. Feelworld F7 sun shade is kind of annoying and there's nothing to protect the screen when you put it away like with the Viltrox. One thing to note is that I think most if not ALL of these have terrible cold shoe mounts. My monitor fell off 4-5 times during a recent shoot in India. Got back to the US and immediately replaced it with a Manfrotto 492LCD micro ball head that is SOLID. And to make a long comment longer, the GH4 and GH5 have terrible latency over HDMI no matter what monitor you use. I tried to use my GH4 to send to a projector for a live event so people in the back could see better and the video was so delayed compared to the live audio over the speaker system that it was making it look like a bad kung-fu movie hahaha.

Thanks for the time, money and effort you put into making this video, Caleb! Some questions: 1. If I am primarily getting a monitor like these primarily for drone use, how much of an issue is the lag problem? 2. Have you tried the Elvid SkyVision 7" On-Camera & Aerial Imaging LCD Monitor? 3. On the specs for it, the brightness isn't measured in NIT, but rather in cd/m². How does that compare to NIT (better or worse)? Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer these. - Christopher (The American Photographer Down in Brazil).

I think there's SOME delay inherent with the GH5, but some of these monitors it's clear they are adding some as well! I'm not sure about the GH5 myself, but I have a Black Magic Video Assist 4k and on the Sony a6300, it's perfect - no delay that I can see but on my GH5, I certainly notice it being at least a few frames different. I've been toying with the idea of checking out the SmallHD lineup with the Focus coming out/out now, but I'm concerned about that delay being there, too! I use monitors a lot for off-the-sticks or shoulder shooting, so the delay is always something I'm concerned with, and I'm glad you showcased how much there is with someone of these! Do you still use that small Ikan monitor you showed off....I'd say about a year ago? That seemed nice but small compared to these options for a similar price!
@Beardedbraceface7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, GH5 has terrible latency (GH4 was the same thing). Nobody seems to talk about it so I'm excited this video is brining attention to it. Hopefully it will help bring it to light and get panasonic to work on it.
@Ranger7Studios7 жыл бұрын
Is there ANY monitor without latency or do they all have the same problem on the Panasonic cameras?
@The8BitDuke7 жыл бұрын
I am not sure. The issue is getting them down on the monitor level as much as you can. If you look up Panasonic's GH5 Clean HDMI Output Video, where they use a Atmos recorder, you can see the delay of a handful of frames in their example. (Watch the guy's hands!) Some of certainly better than others, but it makes it hard for me to consider using monitors fullon day-to-day with a lot of delay, but I could live with a few frames delay from higher end monitors. Hopefully this is something Panasonic can address in a firmware update....but I'm not holding my breath.
@dslrvideoshooter7 жыл бұрын
What is odd is that I tested these on the GH4, GH5, a6500 and all had bad latency at 4K AND 1080... Very odd.
@Beardedbraceface7 жыл бұрын
With the GH4/GH5 I've found the latency does get a TINY bit better if you are in 1080 rather than 4K. I believe shooting in lower frame rates helps too, but not a dramatic improvement at all. Plus I'm not going to change my resolution and frame rate just to get a little less lag on my monitor haha.

@EricLefebvrePhotography7 жыл бұрын
If you do these again in the future, I would recommend filming a slate with a time code display (or a tablet / with a timecode app) so you can see just how much of a delay there actually is. Great video. Too bad about the delay on these. Things like racking focus or keeping focus on a moving talent is gonna be hard. :/

Thanks for the great video! I bought the the Viltrox DC-70 HD and found that focus peaking does not work on it. I came back to watch the video again and I see that your copy doesn't do focus peaking either (7:02). There is a problem with the histogram as well, never showing 75% white. Also, The 2A power supply they sell for the monitor doesn't put out enough current to drive the monitor at all (boots, then crashes). Fortunately, the monitor can be powered via the USB "upgrade" port. The sun shade is great, though, as well as the brightness/color/contrast/resolution. It looks great, but the extra features are not only hard to get at vie the crappy wheel-button interface, but some of them just don't work.

If you ever do a test like this again, using a phone with a stop watch is a great way to test latency. Point the camera at the screen of the phone as it counts up and then freeze a frame from your second cam (pointed at the camera and monitor) in post. Measure the difference between the time shown on the monitor vs the time shown on the back panel of the camera. It shouldn't really add any real extra setup or time to your recording and only a little bit of difference in post but gives you a very accurate measurement of the actual input latency.

I once purchased a 200 € monitor that is the worst (not because it was relatively “cheap”, it was just bad, especially for the price): the HDMI didn't work, the bottom part where the battery plate is attached broke the first day (very cheap plastic!), no battery charge level indicator... I've been regretting it since today. But that teach me to be much more careful and do my research much more carefully since then. I'm not sure all these beauties were available then, tho... It was Walimex (you're welcome...) and looked very much like that MustHD... Helpful video, as always.

I purchased the Feelworld FW760 a while back and find it to be a great monitor. I also compared it to the MustHD 7" model. I thought you would have mentioned the HDMI locking feature on the MustHD monitor which is a nice addition. "Holy Balls..." classic!
