In this video I go over marine biology jobs I have some level of experience with. You don't necessarily need a "marine biology major" for many of these ocean jobs, as they come from a variety of backgrounds. Many of these also fall into the categories of environmental science careers and careers in biology.

I wanted to become a marine biologist as a kid. When I realized I lacked scientific and mathematical aptitude, I turned to reefkeeping instead. And I can tell you my Clownfish would be too sad to see me leave and study the bigger ocean.

:) Glad you share a love of the ocean. For me there’s really no other way to cultivate an intimate relationship with the ocean than to take care of a small piece of it on a daily basis. That’s why I have decided to become a reef tank hobbyist. You may swim with fish and ocean animals while diving or snorkeling or doing research on them up close, but none is as magical as having them live for years, even decades under none other than your own care and regard for their environment. I am deeply upset that there are activist groups trying to end the saltwater hobby. If possible I would only buy Captive bred fish and corals (which unfortunately is far from a reality currently, save for a select number of species), but ending the saltwater hobby altogether would mean losing a vital source of inspiration for future generations in their appreciation of God’s design when He created the oceans of the world. Not to mention with the rate that our coral reefs are dying due to global warming, some species may only exist in captivity as a result of captive breeding efforts a few decades down the line. We may even assist marine biologists by growing corals and raising fish to give back to the oceans (of course we’ll keep some to ourselves in our tanks :)). We can be the staunchest allies of marine biologists and I really believe that even the marine biologist experience is not complete without getting into the hobby side of things. :) My deepest disrespect for these brain dead conservation groups and the politicians who back them unconditionally. If they really think they can act in the better interests of these beautiful and amazing marine animals, they should prove that by taking care of a reef tank. I bet 90% of them will think it’s too difficult after only a week. If they have not personally experienced what it takes to maintain such fragile ecosystems yet try to attack the people who can AKA us, they’re in no position to do what’s “best” for these animals. Same with their attitude towards cats and dogs really. I’d not hesitate to use brutal tactics to crush them if I ever become a governor or even the president. I’d treat them as a modern day KKK, domestic terrorist groups and use every tool in my playbook to track down their leaders one by one and rip their organizational abilities to shreds.

Getting PADI Open Water Diver certified costs around $200 and involves some classwork, a few pool dives, and a few ocean dives. You need that certification to be able to go on other trips and, once you have that, you can keep going and get more certifications in more specialized areas like cave diving or ice diving, or upgrade your fundamental skills to Advanced Open Water, Rescue, Master Scuba Diver, and even further. It's really cool- you need to try it!

@Elyana Fowler so basically there are loads of science/sea animals books like the science of ocean and animal encyclopedia which they will give you a basic understanding or there are websites like seneca which will help you with biology and when your about 14 or if you are that age or higher then you can do 6 week trips to like Figi and the website is www.gvi.com which allows you to do courses and its open now. Just enjoying the sea maybe water sports or get maybe some diving in if you can and then at uni study biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics and then just apply for some jobs like im 12 so like i don't probably know everything but this is basically it

I'm currently an undergraduate student looking to get a masters in marine biology. I've been fascinated with this career for a long time. However, one of the biggest issues I've been worried about in pursuing this career is the whole independency thing. I've always imagined working with a team in this sort of career, but if that's not how it really works, I'm not sure if its really going to suit me since I'm really used to following instructions, a set plan, a schedule, or someone else's orders. My biggest drive in marine biology is because I want to research sharks, specifically. I want to be in the field with them, tag them, study their ecology, follow their patterns, etc.

@oceanscholar
@oceanscholar 3 жыл бұрын
I gave up becoming a marine veterinarian because I realized I really wasn't all that interested in animal health and medicine. I'm far more interested in ecology and environmental advocacy. Although you can definitely incorporate both of these into the life of a marine veterinary position, I didn't want those interests to come second to the primary role of animal health. The road is TOUGH for marine veterinarians, but the persistent and dedicated do succeed! Also, once you actually receive your DVM, you can do all kinds of things! Even if you don't end up finding a position to work with aquatic animals. One of the great benefits of pursuing veterinary science is that DVMs will always have a job.

What college did you go to and can you make a video of the top marine biology programs??
@oceanscholar
@oceanscholar 3 жыл бұрын
I went to Florida State University! I made a video about this titled "Life as a Marine Biology Major" if you were interested. I've been attempting to create a video about top programs for marine biology, but realized it's quite a complex subject! I'll likely post one eventually once I've done enough research.

Bit of disclaimer, if you actually end up going for marine Biology with a focus on marine mammals, it's is most likely that you're gonna end up being anti training/captivity and against sea world institutions. Has hapoened to a lot of people I know, mostly because of how cruel things like dolphin training can be.

@oceanscholar

There definitely is somewhere in the world! I would say your best bet for helping your career path is beginning to locate and talk to professionals in your desired field. See if you can find marine mammal rescuers near you and see if you can talk to them or shadow them! That experience will help you immensely in learning about the career and having something to put on your resume related to it.

Are the job opportunities for marine biology good or you have to get a PhD to get the good jobs because when I was a kid I always wanted to take care of sea animals. But, now I don’t know. I’m trying to protect my financial state for the future and I’m not the type to take risk just because it’s my dream.
@draxbrady1535
@draxbrady1535 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know how much this helps, but from what I gather a PhD means that you will be leading the research projects, a master degree means you will usually be a leader within the project, and a bachelors degree can get you to be the worker within the project (salaries vary depending on degree, job, and location) I know it is a very competitive field with more people competing for jobs than jobs. If you are truly passionate, I’m confidant you’ll find a field that’s right for you. Hope this helped a little!

@oceanscholar
@oceanscholar 3 жыл бұрын
That's awesome! A diverse background is surprisingly useful in this field. In fact, one of my colleagues actually had to teach herself a LOT about masonry and cement for her PhD as she had to makeshift a set up for her coral settlement tiles! You'd be surprised the overlap you see in marine science between disciplines. My big tip for getting started is to start "dipping your toes in the water" as much as you can with volunteering. Find local opportunities related to marine science around your area and try to volunteer with them. This will start to give you a better idea of the direction you want to head in.
