Who are Kara and Nate?!
Watch our documentary here: • 100th COUNTRY DOCUMENTARY
Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment.
We discovered the world of “travel hacking” while planning our honeymoon & became addicted ;)
So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world.
Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went back home to “normal life.” We started this channel to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with living on the road and found a new passion for capturing our travels through video. So we did everything we could to keep going.
4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time!
After ~2 years of van life, we are back to full time international traveling! And now we are finding the best adventures the world has to offer :)
We are incredibly grateful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. 😊🎥🌎 Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey!

Hey, I’m the Chris mentioned!! I’m so glad that you went!! And by the way, I commented before on one of their videos about how nice they were to me after my mother died, and how she was a big fan of them. Kara and Nate are legitimately every bit as nice as you’d expect. It’s great that with how the world is these days, that there’s such people out there making the world a better place.

What you are describing as celebrating Christmas in Belgium on the 5th of December is actually called Sinterklaas. It's different than Christmas. It's also celebrated in the Netherlands. Sinterklaas is not how we celebrate Christmas. We have a Santa Claus too, called Kerstman and it's the same Santa Claus as in the USA. However in the Netherlands Sinterklaas is a bigger deal for kids than Christmas (but it is changing more and more)

Hi! A note from a dutchie here: what you describe as Santa for Belgium (and by extention the Netherlands too) is Sinterklaas. He's here from the 18th of november till 5 december. Santa and Christmas is celebrated just the same! So we actually have more holidays!

I came here to say this! Kara and Nate, these countries still have Santa. But Saint Nicolas and Pere Fouettard / Krampus are a separate tradition celebrated on Dec 6. Saint Nicolas is the ancestor of Santa, but he still wears his priest clothes.

In Germany it's Nikolaus. St. Nikolaus. He comes in the night from 5th to 6th December and puts sweets and gifts in shoes, which the kids cleaned before and put it in front of the door. The bishop hat is because he used to be one. The real one... As explained in the previous comment. At Christmas the Weihnachtsmann (Christmas man) is coming, who looks like the American santa claus

Well it should be mentioned that for decades the car lobby has successfully defunded the trains to the point that there are not enough train tracks to support higher demand. Can’t put more trains in service if there isn’t enough tracks to run them on. Decades of neo-liberal policies now rearing its ugly head. German trains can no longer be on time.

You got the complete German train experience lol! Don’t take a route with too many layovers because you will probably miss them. Or always plan ahead and look for an alternative in case of a delay! Feuerzangenbowle is a German Movie Classic and Bowle is a drink mixture that contains fruit, wine and sometimes spices or sparkling water... the Romanian guy says „In Deutschland“. Ah and i read in the news that this year many German Christmas markets are without music because the GEMA (German authority for musical rights) asks exorbitant amounts of money for the Christmas songs. Great idea for a Christmas series keep up the great work!

hey just a German trying to explain a few things you were wondering about: 1. there is no music on most christmas markets this in Germany this year because they just raised the royalties for the music like crazy high and the markets try to boycott that because its ridiculously high. 2. those little sausages are THE thing in Nürnberg and are known throughout Germany as Nürnberger. 3. May seem crazy but the apple sauce is the traditional topping for the fried potato things. You should try it, its amazing. Loving this serious, cant wait for part 2 and 3. Have fun exploring!

Little note from someone living in Belgium! What you describe as Belgium's "Santa Claus" is actually Saint Nicolas, which is a completely different person. And celebrated by many (mostly) central-europe countries. There is a hole legend behind the reason as to why he became a Saint, and many traditions that come with him depending on which country he's celebrated in. He's believed to be the inspiration behind Santa Claus' looks, as you can see from their many similarities. Usually kids get small gifts such as books, socks,... in addition to tangerines and chocolate/candy. We still have presents coming from Santa, which are usually bigger than St. Nicolas', on Christmas day and still celebrate him as well on the 25th! 😊

Nowadays its not like that anymore but the same way that they have santa runs in some cities they have krampus and st. Nikolaus runs

for everyone wondering: The shoe outside thing is not done at christmas but at december 5/6th. On that day saint Nick will come and leave some small presents (usually just some chocolates or a small toy) for the kids.. Kids will polish their shoes and leave it outside over night. Next morning the first thing they do is look outside and see what they`ve got. Saint Nick has a "bad" helper, depending in which region you are its either "knecht ruprecht" or the more scarier demonlike Crampus. Santa Claus and Saint Nick are not the same! It gives me flashbacks and how much you guys have grown and that you’ve grown into some of the kindest, amazing people that my day wouldn’t be complete unless I watch your videos or find updates on your Instagram stories. The Christmas market in Craiova - Romania was voted 2nd best Christmas market in Europe this year. It's a beautiful market and it also has a nice theme - The snow queen (from the story written by Hans Christian Anderson). If you read or already know the story like i do (as a little girl i always asked my parents to read me this story because it was one of my favorites) you will see elements mentioned in the story inside the Christmas market and it will all make sense bettee than for the people who don't know the story. Have a great trip around Europe ! Stay safe and enjoy these magical moments ! ❤

Just came back from Brussels, Bruges, Nuremberg and Vienna over 11 days. Took my wife and my 2 cousins, who are in there 70's, on this journey. I have to admit it was very refreshing to see countries that still enjoy the authentic Christmas spirit! The 20" of snow and ice did prevent us from getting to Munich, but was a great experience!

Nooooo! Santa Clauss doesn't dress differently in Belgium. We have another event for the kids (and older kids like Kara too) on the 6th of December called "St. Nicholas" and this is the character you met. Children put out their shoes, hoping St. Nicholas would leave them small gifts or treats. It's also well-known in the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Seriously, we can't have Santa Clauss dressed anything else than the Santa Clauss of Coca-Cola.

There are pockets in the US where we get stockings filled for St. Nick’s on the 6th too! (In addition to the presents around the tree on the 25th). We don’t have the actual Saint character to go along with that day though. 😊

as a former nuremberg local who now lives across the country it was a true heartwarming joy to watch you enjoy the market at townsquare. it is quite fun seeing another perspective on the city i grew up in. the gingerbread is to be said to been have invented in nuremberg and where it all started. the "angel" you can see everywhere, with the curls and wings is called "Christkind". child of christ or worldy christkid. whe is representing the good in the word and the reminder to be grateful and to give without judgment. there are alot of legends and stories around her and every 3/4 years there is election like pageant where girls from around to can audition to represent her, so open the christmasmarket on the sunday in dezember and travel around town. it's a whole spiel with pressconferences and meetings with the mayor and stuff. the town goes wild for her. hope you enjoyed the town itself aswell, just a little but. the castle is beautiful and the view from up top is breathtaking.

Sinterklaar and Santa Claus (Christmas) are two different things. We have the same Christmas as in the US. Except that presents tend to be given on the 24th in the evening. Not 25th in the morning. But beginning of December and Christmas are two different parties. ☺️ Love the vids. As always!

One thing I learned when I was at Bible school in Germany for 6 months was that Germans are VERY on time (pünktlich), but their transportation is NOT at all. I loved the German Christmas markets! They're so beautiful and each one has a different style Glühwein mug with different numbers on them. And each year they're different- even at the same market! It's so unique!

I took my wife to Vienna and Salzburg for the Christmas markets in 2012, and with a ski trip when the snow finally arrived. She related it as the best trip ever, probably because it hits all the senses: food, festivities, festive music, decor, happy people, refined beverages, etc.! By the way, Nate, how do you say "french fries" in Belgium?

This video brought me so much holiday warmth and love. I absolutely love seeing the two of you interact with each other and truly enjoy each other's company. What you have is so very special, and you share it with everyone, which makes it even more special. I might have to go dig through my hard drives to revisit the pictures of my trip to Munich and the Marienplatz Christkindlmarkt. I laughed so hard when I saw a Santa pull his sleigh up to a Gluhwein stand, order one, then hop back into his sleigh and drive away. Thanks for bringing back these memories for me and for sharing your holiday spirit.

German here with a note why there is no music in Nuremberg 😊 There is currently a debate in Germany about fees for playing songs in public. The fees are to be increased and this also affects Christmas markets, for example. As a protest, music is sometimes not played there.

Santa is something else than 'Sinterklaas' in Belgium! Sinterklaas is a holiday on the 6th of december, where Sinterklaas with his helpers go around the world to bring presents to children. Children in Belgium and The Nederlands place their shoes at a table in the house, with a carrot for his horse and a belgian beer for the helpers, and in return when the kids wake up in the morning, there are A LOT of candy and toys in the shoes and on the table! Santa is just like the rest of the world on 25th of december :) They both look kind of the same but it's completely different! In Belgium people with children also place their Christmas trees only AFTER 6th of december because it would be rude to 'Sinterklaas'. ;) Sinterklaas is a holiday just for children, where Santa and Christmas are for every age. Big fan, thank you for coming to Belgium! Too bad I didn't get to meet you! xxx
